I'm sorry you're not feeling well- if It's Rice Dream I'm pretty sure it has barley in it. I don't buy it so I haven't read the label in awhile but I know it was not gluten-free before. Hope you feel better soon!

I'm a super-sensitive celiac. I started drinking Rice Dream a few months ago, and I haven't had any problems. I just checked the label, and I didn't see any gluten ingredients. Have you tried any other new items lately?

jststric Contributor

I am also intolerant of rice. Which really does suck as alot of gluten-free products relies on rice flour, rice milk, etc. I don't recall it having gluten in it but that was way back when I was just learning and going thru the elimination thing. Many of us are intolerant of many things, as you have said you are also dairy-intolerant. Very common. But keep your mind open to other food groups also. Best wishes!

Rice Dream is made using barley. There are a lot of us who do react to it. Barley does not have to be declared on a label when it is only used in small amounts as a flavoring agent or in the processing. Rice Dream used to disclose the barley but removed it from the label some time ago.

Try almond or hemp milk. They are both delicious.

I checked the ingredients earlier, and it looked fine. Now, looking at the front of the box, it is labeled "Gluten-free"

Rice Dream is not gluten free. AFAIK all the other brands are. But there is at least one that contains soy if you are avoiding that.

The amount that's in there is so small they don't have to claim it. But it's there!

There are no regs for the gluten free label. If the amount of gluten is very small or the gluten ingredient is used in processing or as a flavoring agent it does not have to be declared. Personally I believe all gluten should be declared but the 'powers that be' seem to think 'a little bit' won't hurt us. This is of course not the case for many of us. Those of us that do react to small amounts really need to speak up by contacting the FDA. We need total disclosure just the same as folks with true allergies to the 'big 8'.

Keep in mind - there are no rules regulating that barley be disclosed, nor any rule that states what "gluten free" means. Any company can put gluten free on anything.

That being said, here is the company's take on it: Open Original Shared Link

"Is RICE DREAM Beverage a gluten free product?

Yes. Although RICE DREAM Beverage is processed using a barley enzyme, the barley enzyme is discarded after use. The final beverage might contain a minute residual amount (less than .002%) of barley protein. For a list of gluten free products click here "

For some people, it is enough to give them symptoms. For others, it isn't. If I remember correctly, at one point, they used to list the barley, and then took it off their label, but the actual formula did not change.

Thank you to happygirl, ravenwoodglass, and Juliebove for setting me straight!I am always so careful about checking labels, but that explains the issues I've had these few months. I switched to Rice Dream (from Soy Dream), yet have had lingering problems. It didn't occur to me that Rice Dream could be the source of it.

Thanks for the help!

Pacific brand rice, almond, hazelnut, and oat milks are all gluten-free, SF, CF, and LF. I'm also super sensitive and cannot tolerate Rice Dream. Hemp Dream seems to be OK though. Blue Diamond puts soy lecithin in their almond milk. :( By the way, Pacific makes a chocolate hazelnut that when blended up with a frozen banana, a couple frozen strawberries, coconut milk, and pineapple tastes just like a banana split. :D

* Edit - Oh yeah, I usually dump a splash of vanilla extract in too.

SO Delicious brand coconut milk...soy free...dairy free and Gluten free. I've used it in mashed potatoes, cereal ,soup ,pancakes, hot chocolate, etc. Surprisingly does not add coconut flavor to foods. My daughter and granddaughter are dairy free and soy turned out to be a problem also. My little granddaughter will have it warm with nutmeg and honey. It's sold in half gallon containers in refrigerated section. They also make dairy free soy free yogurt and frozen dessert ( ice cream) and fudge pops.

Ferritin levels.  And see what your hemoglobin looks like too, that will tell you if you are anemic?  You can have 'low normal' levels that will not be flagged by blood tests.  I had 'low normal' levels, my lab reading was. c12, just over what was considered normal, but I had small benign lesion on my tongue, and sometimes a sore mouth, and a consultant maxillofacial ordered an iron infusion for me as he felt my levels were too low and if he  raised them to 40, it would help.   Because you are not feeling 100% it might be worth looking at your levels, then discussing with your doctor if they are low normal.  But I stress, don't supplement iron without your levels being monitored, too much is dangerous.

Hi Katht -  I sympathize with your struggles in following a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. I found out that I had Celiac Disease a few months before I turned 70. I just turned 89 and it has taken me almost 20 years to attain a fairly normal intestinal  function. I also lost a lot of weight, down to 100 lb. down from about 140 lb. What Trents wrote you was very true for me. I am still elimination foods from my diet. One person suggested you keep a food diary and that is a good idea but it is probably best just to do an elimination diet. There are several ne and maybe one for celiacs. I used one for a while and started with plain rice and zucchini and then added back other foods to see if I reacted or not. That helped a great deal but what I did not realise that it would only very small amounts of some foods to cause inflammation in my intestine. Within the last few years I have stopped eating any trace amounts of hot peppers, corn and soy(mostly in supplements) and nuts, (the corn in Tylenol was giving me stomach aches and the nuts were causing foot pains). Starting an elimination diet with white rice is better than brown rice that has some natural toxins. In addition it is very important to drink sufficient plain water. You can find out how much to drink for your height and weight online. I do have difficulty drinking 48 ounces of water but just recently have found an electrolyte supplement that helps me stay well hydrated, Adding the water and electrolytes may reduce muscle cramps and gag spams you wrote about. . Also buy some anti-gluten enzyme capsules to take with meals. I use GliadinX advertised here. These are a lot of things to do at one time as they reflect my 20 years of experience. I hope you do what you can manage to do over time. Good luck and take care.

Hi all !! Did anyone ever get prescribed methylprednisone steroids for inflammation of stomach and intestines?  Did it work ??  Thank you !!

Hi Colleen Are you supplementing B12/having injections? I have learned recently that sometimes when you start addressing a B12 deficiency, it can temporarily make your symptoms worse.  But it is important not to stop the treatment.  Regarding your problems with anxiety, again that is another symptom of a B12 deficiency.   I didn't know what anxiety was until it hit me like a train several months before gastrointestinal issues began, so I can certainly relate.   Two books which helped me hugely were At Last A Life by Paul David (there is a website you can look up) and The Depression Cure: The Six-Step Programme to Beat Depression Without Drugs by Dr Steve Llardi.  Although his book is aimed at people who have depression, following the principals he sets out was so helpful in lessening my anxiety.  Llardi suggests we need to focus on getting enough: - physical exercise - omega-3 fatty acids - natural sunlight exposure - restorative sleep - social connectedness - meaningful, engaging activity   ... and we should feel a lot better. That is not to stay you must stop taking medication for depression or anxiety if you have been prescribed it, but adopting the changes Dr Llardi sets out in the book should really help. Can I just ask two more questions:  1) you say that you are B12 deficient, did they test your iron levels too?  If not, you really ought to be checked for deficiency and, 2) did they check your thyroid function, as an overactive thyroid can be cause rapid heartbeat and a lot of coeliacs have thyroid issues?
