i'm 5' (used to be 5' 1/2" but am shrinking from severe osteoporosis). i haven't grown since i was 14 or so and was always the shortest one in class. my brother is 6', my dad is 5' 9", my mom's 5' 5". i think i got the short end of the stick. :D

I'm 5'3" or 5'4", but I do get it honestly. My mother is 5'0 1/2" and my sister is 4'11 1/2".

I'm just about 5'7, but I believe that I didn't get celiac until after my growth spurt.

This one must have escaped me, if I'm a celiac. I had all the classic gut symptoms throughout my childhood, but I'm a 6'1" female! :lol:

I'm 5'1, both my parents were fairly short ... Mom at 4'8 and Dad at 5'8. I believe that Celiac is on both sides of the family. My Dad's family is gone now, including him, so there will be no testing on that side. My Mom is refusing to be tested, but her sister has many auto immune diseases and has not yet been tested for Celiac. Part of Mom's short stature is that she was born with fused discs in her back. Her Mom was quite a bit taller.

Well, who can guess how tall they might have been, just cause your short, and everyone in your family was tall, that does not mean you should be. I do not know how you would begin to measure shuch a thing. For example at 5'11" I am by far the shortest adult male in my family, but 5 11 is around average for a man. So should I have been taller? Who knows? :huh:

We are all tall except my mum. My brother and I were the tallest of our classes when kids, but other men have mostly caught up with us and overtaken us nowadays. I was extremely emaciated till over 25 but coeliac was not suspected even though it was already known of in a few quarters. It was thought my parents were starving me and they were let off the hook when I put on weight because I put on height - but no width.

I ended up 5'8", my dad is 6'6" and my mom is 5'1". I would have been a lot taller, I am glad my growth was stunted! I would have hated being that tall. My kids however seem to be taking after the tall side as well. My son is 10 and he is already 5'4" and my daugher is 5'6" and she is 13.

I am 5 ft.

I see a definite pattern of short people here except for a few. my parents are short, too, but then again, isn't this disease genetic? How many of our parents have it or might have it but don't know it?

I know my mom won't get tested even though I told her to...not because she doesn't believe it; she's just lazy about it b/c she barely even believes I have it, let alone her and she is asymptomatic.

But she does have a terrible rash for the longest time and I told her it could be DH. She STILL won't get tested....don't get it.

i'm nearly 5'2", i've been this height since i was 14.... im almost 21! i don't think that is normal!

I posted a thread in another section about other tall celiacs, but I am glad to have found this post. I am 6'2'' and the tallest in my family! My dad is 6' and mom is 5'6''. Even when I probably had celiac (it slowed down my puberty) I was still growing somewhat, then I shot up even though I was malnourished/anemic! I was 5'10'' at 17 just before graduating hs and when I was diagnosed. Then, I just kept growing while at college! I love being this tall and I find it amazing that I beat the odds. B)

I am 4'10" and stopped growing at age 11, my brother also celiac was 5'2" he had stopped growing completely from age 4 through 8 when he was diagnosed.

      trents:  Why some can tolerate european bread but not american bread.     I take 600 mcg a day.  Right in the middle of the safe range.   Groups at Risk of Iodine Inadequacy Though though the NIH does not specifically list Celiac Disease in this group, they state: "Iodide is quickly and almost completely absorbed in the stomach and duodenum. Iodate is reduced in the gastrointestinal tract and absorbed as iodide [2,5]."  That would certainly include malabsorption of Iodine due to Celiac Disease with resultant Iodine Deficiency.       Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?

      Excess iodine supplements can cause significant health issues, primarily disrupting thyroid function. My daughter has issues with even small amounts of dietary iodine. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, consistently consuming amounts far above the tolerable upper limit (1,100 mcg/day for adults) from high-dose supplements can trigger both hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, worsen autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's, and lead to goiter. Other side effects include gastrointestinal distress. The risk is highest for individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions, and while dietary iodine rarely reaches toxic levels, unsupervised high-dose supplementation is dangerous and should only be undertaken with medical guidance to avoid serious complications. It's best to check with your doctor before supplementing iodine.

      In Europe they have banned several dough modifiers potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide.  Both linked to cancers.  Studies have linked potassium bromide to kidney, thyroid, and gastrointestinal cancers.  A ban on it in goes into effect in California in 2027. I suspect this, more than a specific strain of wheat to be controlling factor.  Sourdough natural fermentation conditions the dough without chemicals. Iodine was used in the US as a dough modifier until the 1970s. Since then iodine intake in the US dropped 50%.  Iodine is essential for thyroid hormones.  Thyroid hormone use for hypothyroidism has doubled in the United States from 1997 to 2016.   Clinical Thyroidology® for the Public In the UK, incidently, prescriptions for the thyroid hormone levothyroxine have increased by more than 12 million in a decade.  The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's official journal Standard thyroid tests will not show insufficient iodine intake.  Iodine 24 Hour Urine Test measures iodine excretion over a full day to evaluate iodine status and thyroid health. 75 year old male.  I tried adding seaweed into my diet and did get improvement in healing, muscle tone, skin; but in was not enough and I could not sustain it in my diet at the level intake I needed.  So I supplement 600 mcg Liquid Iodine (RDA 150 to 1000 mcg) per day.  It has turbocharged my recovery from 63 years of undiagnosed celiac disease.  Improvement in healing a non-healing sebaceous cyst. brain fog, vision, hair, skin, nails. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis celiac disease experience exacerbation of the rash with iodine. The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect Crying Wolf?

      same! how amazing you have a friend who has celiac disease. i find myself wishing i had someone to talk about it with other than my partner (who has been so supportive regardless)
