Hi,

I went to Friendly's the other day and got Ice Cream. I explained my allergy and they showed me the ingredients on a ice cream box and did not see wheat. So does anyone know if it is Gluten Free because I am breaking out with DH like crazy?

Maybe the ice cream was contaminated from doubling dipping spoons from gluten to gluten free ice cream. Did you eat anything else there?

I have eaten at Friendly's a few times since being diagnosed. I have also had the vanilla and the black raspberry ice cream 2 times. I really love the black ras and it did NOT give me any problems. Keep in mind I do not have DH though... Sure you were not contaminated somewhere else? Could be cross contamination as was just mentioned as well.

Yes. The next night I went to Applebees and got a stake. I specifically told waitress about my disease and she was good enough to catch one of the cheffs putting bread on the plate. I'm wondering if there is wheat in the seasoning. They told me they would make it right but my gut says something is amiss.

About the ice cream, the other thought I had was that pieces of the cone might have gotten in the ice cream bucket.

I have been wondering how long it would take for DH to appear after an accidental glutenting. It is always accidental so it is hard to say. Until now for me. At a party in April the host told me a dessert salad was made with rice. I was very exicted and ate a tablespoon or two. I went back for seconds it was so good. Then I noticed, That wasnt rice it was PASTA! Wheat pasta! OMG. Fear, panic, set in. I vomited. Thought everything was cool. No DH outbreak. Four weeks later, what happens? You guessed it, DH breakout. I really do not believe I was accidentally glutened immediately before the break out. So I have come to the conclusion the protien floats around in the blood for quite some time before the DH appears.

Anyone else have a guess?

I think everyone's bodies are different with how long it takes to get a reaction.

On a side note, I remember eating at an Applebees 5 yrs ago for my bday. My parents took me out and I had a tough time finding something to eat there. Apparently they get meat that is already pre-flavored containing gluten. Now, this was yrs ago and in Rhode Island, I don't know if it is still true. I was able to have a steak that was unseasoned and they just got it in before it was contaminated.

That restaurant is bad. They never have anything that we can eat and they're not very accomodating. I'm in Houston. Be careful of steaks that have been marinated as they may contain gluten.

Now I am probably sidetracking a little but since you mentioned Applebys. I must have just had a wonderful waiter. I live in Columbus, Ohio, and on a recent visit to a suberbian Appleby's (which I just usually avoid because I don't really like chain resturants like that) I explained to the waiter about my allergies. He went and got the manager and the two of them went to the back and researched all of the ingredients in their marinade for chicken. The manager came out and told me they could grill a plain chicken breast for me in a clean pan! and they went to the grocery store and bought safe salad dressing for me! They were absolutley the best. I know that it was the people not the resturant but those guys were wonderful.

Just to add in my two cents, I have been having problems lately with getting ice cream. I always get what I know is gluten-free and watch them wash the scoop but I think I am very sensitive to cross contamination so it looks like I'm about to become dairy Queen's best soft-serve customer. :( Not that I don't like DQ but I miss going out for hard ice cream).

We went to an Applebees about a year ago. The manager told me that everything was preseasoned except the salmon steaks. He went and real ALL the labeling. He told me to bring my own baked potato next time and they would cook it for me. He was super nice about everything. Maybe, they have more unseasoned items now, as I have not tried them since then. But, have been meaning to. Armetta B)

      thank you RMJ! That is very helpful advice. Good to know we aren’t crazy if we don’t do the endoscopy. We are going to try the gluten free and see how symptoms and levels improve.    thank you Wheatwacked (love the username lol) that is also reassuring. Thankfully she has an amazing and experienced pediatrician. And yesss I forgot to mention the poop! She has the weirdest poop issues.    How long did it take y'all to start seeing improvement in symptoms?

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies.  Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree.  Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant.   That may happen even with endoscopy.  Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end you save the potential trauma of the endoscopy for your baby.   Mine also had really nasty poop.  His doctor started him on Nutramigen Infant because at the time it was the only product that was hypo allergenic and had complete nutrition. The improvement was immediate.

      So her tissue transglutaminase antibody is almost 4x the upper end of the normal range - likely a real result. The other things you can do besides an endoscopy would be: 1.  Genetic testing.  Unfortunately a large proportion of the population has genes permissive for celiac disease, but only a small proportion of those with the genes have it. With family history it is likely she has the genes. 2.  Try a gluten free diet and see if the symptoms go away AND the antibody levels return to normal. (This is what I would do). Endoscopies aren’t always accurate in patients as young as your daughter. Unfortunately, without an endoscopy, some doctor later in her life may question whether she really has celiac disease or not, and you’ll need to be a fierce mama bear to defend the diagnosis! Be sure you have a good written record of her current pediatrician’s diagnosis. Doing a gluten challenge for an endoscopy later in life could cause a very uncomfortable level of symptoms.   Having yourself, your husband and your son tested would be a great idea.

      here are the lab ranges.  Normal ranges for tissue transglutaminase are: <15.0 Antibody not detected > or = 15.0 Antibody detected normal for endomysial antibody is < 1.5. So she is barely positive but still positive.

      I have been diagnosed with coeliacs disease today after endoscopy, bloods and CT scan. I have also been diagnosed with Mesenteric Panniculitis today. Both of which I believe are autoimmune diseases. I have been told I will need a dexa scan and a repeat CT scan in 6 months. I had not even heard of Mesenteric Panniculitis till today. I don’t know much about it? Has anyone else got both of these.
