Help! What Could I Be Doing Wrong?

Ok without being to disgusting in this post I need help!

I have really begun to pay close attention to my diet this last month as well as my symptoms.

I have the weirdest thing happening. My bathroom issues seem to be on a cycle! Maybe I am losing my mind?

Day one======Major D

Day two======Less D almost nothing at all

Day three=====goes to C

Day four=====C gets cleared out only to be followed in same bowel movement with D!

What is going on? Any suggestions?

Ok, I have gone completely fresh. I don't even eat processed gluten free stuff on suggestion from this forum. I have been gluten free since April '10.

I have also cut out almost all dairy and even soy.

Breakfast: 2 slices bacon, 1 scrambled egg

Lunch: usually skip because of lack of hunger and I eat breakfast late usually

Dinner: some type of fresh meat (chicken breast, pork chop, fish) usually seasoned with only gluten free cornflake crumbs or just plain ole salt pepper, mashed potatoes, and some sort of fresh veggie, green beans are my fav

I do consume 1 Dr. Pepper in a day but the rest is water

My diet has been extremely limited this week trying to figure out what is triggering me.

I am going to suggest dropping the Dr Pepper for a week and seeing what happens.

It won't hurt and may help.

How funny. Is there anything you do every four days? Workouts, job? Your diet looks very low fiber. I wonder if adding something like an apple to breakfast and having some brown rice instead of the mashed potato would help normalize things?

I was just telling husband that this week (the "vacation" - for everyone BUT me *gir*) I had almost the same thing! Now I am all sorts of messed up from heavens knows what. I don't trust anyone with my food now :(.

I would suggest cutting out the dr pepper and upping the fiber. Also, with the C sometimes a Larabar a day helps (it takes a few days) because it's all dried fruit. I love them. It helps even me out.

I hope it gets better!!!

I do know that I dropped the milk from my diet about a week ago and the loud rumbling in my tummy stopped. It would rumble for hours after having the milk from my cereal. No more cereal either because I dropped the processed gluten free products and went to scratch cooking the few items I eat.

Any suggestions for adding fiber?

I do know that I dropped the milk from my diet about a week ago and the loud rumbling in my tummy stopped. It would rumble for hours after having the milk from my cereal. No more cereal either because I dropped the processed gluten free products and went to scratch cooking the few items I eat.

Any suggestions for adding fiber?

One of the best ways, IMHO, to add fiber is to add sweet potatoes to your diet. They have been used in oriental medicine for a very long time to regulate the digestive system. They have both soluable and insoluable fiber so they help with both D and C. If you like them they might help a great deal. I like them best sauteed with a sprinkle of brown sugar, sliced and baked into 'fries' or mashed and if you add a bit of cinnamon they may help with blood sugar issues also.

I'll bet if you added a good dose of fiber, your system would begin to regulate. Obviously fruits and veggies, whichever you can handle. Almonds, Enjoy Life Trail Mixes, homemade popcorn (olive oil, plain popcorn, light sprinkling of salt), Lara Bars are great--I always have one in my purse, brown rice instead of white.

Start slowly so your body has a chance to get used to the additional fiber and drink lots of water. :)

Asian pears. Eat the skin. I'd start with one quarter to half a pear a day and then up it to a whole pear. Fruits with skins that you eat tend to have more fiber. You also want to make sure that you get both soluble fiber (absorbs water) and insoluble fiber (does not absorb water). Typically skins have insoluble fiber while the insides have more soluble fiber but that's a broad rule with many exceptions.

Blueberries. Cherries. Greens. Start adding beans and lentils if you can tolerate them. Literally, 1-2 tablespoons and then add a little more.

This is a list of food by fiber content. Just look at the serving size carefully (i.e. 1 cup vs a head of lettuce)!

Recommendations vary, but somewhere between 20 and 30g per day is good target for adults. But not all at once ;)

Thank you so much! I definitely assure that it will be slow.

I won't tell you the horrors I went through prior to going gluten free in April. Before that I knew something was wrong with my diet so I went "healthy" and went on a freakish diet of EVERYTHING wheat/whole grain etc and you can imagine how my body reacted! YIKES! THEN and only then did I come across gluten free/celiac. What a difference in the pain of my gut!

Try to eat close to the same time every day, and try not to skip meals or snacks. Doing so may help to get your gut back to normal function. Skipping meals can put more stress on your already damaged gastrointestinal tract.

Thanks to Patti for the chart. It's amazing looking at it how much fiber beans have! Definitely motivation to be cooking some up this coming week.

You cab also try adding some psyillium husks and or ground flax seed meal to your rice or other foods.

      @Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed.       Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

      Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

      I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
