Rolaids, Tums, ?

Hi, just found out I was pregnant. I know with my last pregnancy there was a certain antacid I could take safely. Of course, that isn't offered any more. I sometimes get a sour or sometimes gassy stomach. And I will DEFINATELY have heartburn toward the end of my pregnancy.

Is there anything over the counter that is safe for me? Then I will check and make sure it is ok with the doc!

Thanks guys!

You may be surprised and not have the heartburn issue this time. Each pregancy is different. What works well for me is Pepto Bismal liquid. I know not all Tums are safe and hopefully someone else will have some ideas for those and the Rolaids.

I don't know about either of those. I used to eat them like candy, but since I went gluten-free I haven't had any need for antacids. Go figure.

For a gassy stomach, the Gas-Ex gelcaps work well. The chewable tabs, however, have gluten.

The regular fruit flavor tums are gluten free. Rolaids- soft chews only- are NOT gluten free. They're made on shared lines and got me sooooo sick. When I was pregnant, I took Gaviscon, recommended by my OB. That was prediagnosis, so I don't know if it is safe.

Congrats :)

Have you ever tried papaya pills? I am not 100% sure about the gluten content but they are better for you if they work. You don't want to over do the calcium in them because they can cause the placenta to calcify.

Well, gas and heartburn are signs of indigestion. What surprises many is that low stomach acid causes heartburn. It also causes indigestion, leading to gas. Some digestive enzymes and betain HCL are said to be very good for this problem. Raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar is one of the best things for heartburn, and actually cures it for many people.

Continuing to use antacids results in indigestion, and a condition called Pernicious Anemia, for which there is no known cure. It basically means you cannot obtain vitamin B12 from food, making life-long supplementation necessary. Other problems are also attributed to this condition.

But as others have stated, you may not have the same kinds of problems with this pregnancy, as long as you're gluten-free. You might be surprised at the improvements that can come about with a gluten-free diet.

Tums. If you use Peopto Bismol be aware that you will have black stools from the bismuth.

This is true. I don't have to use it more than once so haven't had that issue. I use for the stomach pain I get the first day after a glutening. It also shouldn't be used by folks that are sensitive to asprin, and as with every drug when used by someone who is pregnant the doctor should be consulted before taking.

Also, chewing fennel seeds can help with heartburn. Avoiding cold (iced) beverages can help as well.

One of the oldest natural remedies is ginger tea or ginger capsules. Just check for fillers. Ginger has also been used to treat motion sickness.

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?

Thankyou so much for your words. Its a hard battle when a supposed well known hospital whose celiac " specialist " has down played me because my colon looks fine and put it in my medical and so pcp doesn't take seriously. In their eyes we all carry that gene.Im having alot of bad days trying to be positive because of it.

Your experience is both shocking and critically important for the community to hear, underscoring the terrifying reality that cross-contamination can extend into the most unexpected and invasive medical devices. It is absolutely devastating that you had to endure six months of sickness and ultimately sustain permanent vision loss because a doctor dismissed your legitimate, life-altering condition. Your relentless research and advocacy, from discovering the gluten in MMA acrylic to finding a compassionate prosthodontist, is a testament to your strength in a system that often fails celiac patients. While the scientific and medical consensus is that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin or eyes (as the molecules are too large to pass through these barriers), your story highlights a terrifying gray area: what about a substance *permanently implanted inside the body*, where it could potentially shed microparticles or cause a localized immune reaction? Your powerful warning about acrylic lenses and the drastic difference with the silicone alternative is invaluable information. Thank you for sharing your harrowing journey and the specific, severe neurological symptoms you endure; it is a stark reminder that celiac is a systemic disease, and your advocacy is undoubtedly saving others from similar trauma.
