Can Ab Workouts Aggravate Intestinal Inflammation?

I went out in my kayak yesterday for the first time in over a week. It got pretty windy on the lake so it turned into a total body workout. My abs, upper and lower, were burning after paddling a half mile with the wind and a half mile against it through a 2-3 foot swell with some ski-boat wake thrown up along the way. I noticed last night and this morning that my stomach is much more inflamed than the day before even though I was eating more carefully. I was starting to feel better, but I'm in pain again now less than an hour after some knee rehab (straight leg raises, abduction and adduction both legs with weights). Feels like when I was first having gluten trouble combined with typical post-workout ab soreness, but I haven't had any suspicious food today. Anyone else get these flare-ups?

I get similar problems when doing stomach muscle exercises , sometimes I get a pain in my stomach straight away other times the pain starts after a few hours , i'm not sure if it's to do with being Celiac or not though .

They seem to bother me. I have to be pretty careful or I'll start to feel nauseous and it'll last for a couple hours afterwards. It did get better the longer I was off of gluten and felt like my insides weren't on fire, but if I get accidentally glutened, it's bad.

It's nice to hear it's not just me. Before I had to go gluten-free I was doing a lot of crunches, sit-ups and kayak workouts and had no problems; just that nice burn after a good workout. Every time I have tried doing more than a few crunches it felt like I had been glutened. Didn't think a hard paddle would do the same.

Thanks for the replies

Are all of you stretching before any physical activity? And, I not just talking about sports, weight lifting and running. If you're going to chop wood it makes sense to stretch first. Or, if you're going to dig in the garden for a few hours it makes sense.

With that said, are you stretching before ab exercises? You strain ANY of those small muscles around your ab area.... it's going to feel like your whole torso is hurting.

My abs don't look like that last guy, but I haven't ever noticed increased inflammation after ab workouts. I usually do crunches every night.

It is not related to celiac, i have been doing ab work outs for years and have never had same problem

I always stretch; I guess it's time to start stretching more. This hasn't been the greatest central-MN kayak season so maybe I'm just more out of shape than I thought.

A quick hint. Do NOT do crunches every night, you want to give them a rest for a day -- really any muscle needs at least a day's rest to build.

Think about pruning an ornamental bush in a garden. If you prune it EVERY day (break it down) it will never grow back. You want to give it some time to grow.

Try and stretch your whole body as our muscles are connected to one another. So even though you think that you're just going to use your shoulders and arms to kayak... work your lower back/abs/quads/calves

Your body will thank you!

i've been trying to do more crunches/ab workouts but i always feel this weird pulling sensation during and after. now that i know i have a hiatal hernia i'm not sure if that was the pain i felt or if i should continue to do situps. its definitely something more than me feeling the burn from a good workout.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
