I think we need a new topic section. We have restaurants, doctors, etc. We need a pet one. We could have a kitty thread, dog thread, bunnies, birds, etc. I will need a kitty for sure if that happens? :)

Poor Cooper. He's an odd dog! He tries sooo hard to make friends with the squirrels. he wags his tail at them and walks slowly up to them. they always run away.

Gabe, my black lab,, loves kittys. He always trys to walk up to the neighborhood kittys.He just doesnt understand why they run from him. :)

Back when I lived in a cabin in SE Ohio we had a black lab named Gus. Guster like to retrieve rocks thrown in the water. He would dive underwater looking for them and bring them back. Or bring something back anyway. Strange dog.

Then we had a batch of kitties one time. There was a maintenance guy over for something I forget what. Anyway, he backed up his pickup to leave just as kitten ran under the rear tire. I yelled at him and he stopped right on a little stripey kitten. Nothing but a mini-cat head and front paws was sticking out from under the tire. I figured that was one less mouse killer in the world. But danged if the kittie wasn't just fine. Walked a little shaky for a few hours but then she a-ok.

Oh, these critter stories are fun!

I went to the window after I took the picture and I could not see what they were looking at. I wonder if they were looking for the first hint of spring , :D

OMG!! HOLY mackeral!! My heart just soared and I burst into a smile. I felt like I was looking right into my Gracie's eyes!! They could be twins!! LOL (I know all labs look alike, but WoW!! ) He's a beauty. :D

That's a picture of Cooper! Every time he is sitting up nice and I try to take his picture, he lays down all crooked like that!

I have to say, and this is the perfect forum....for the longest time, I thought that Cooper had legs that looked like a little boy's. I completely missed the actual boy's legs in the background. :blink::lol:

and PS this thread is fun!!! :P . I am glad I wandered into this forum. I have spent so much time researching on here for MONTHS...and for the first time in so long, I am talking with you all about something other than why my stomach hurts. :unsure: hooray!!

It's a crazy story....

She appeared under our bushes last August, two days after our last remaining beloved cat took ill and had to be put to sleep. She was eating anything she could kill, covered in ticks, cuts, etc...so I started feeding her, thinking she was one of many kitties left on our dirt road.

I was thinking of what to name her...Ella or Bella sounded good....and we put up flyers with her pic in neighbor's mailboxes asking if she belonged to anyone before I got too attached. One called and said "Oh that's our Bella!" :blink:

Weeks passed, she's still dirty, left out in the rain and mud, hungry and thirsty, crying at our windows, etc...so we cleaned her up, she was so sick and we nursed her for 48 hours. She slept the entire time, mostly in one of our laps. Then, she recovered and started eating and in a few weeks, put on 2 lbs. and her coat grew soft and shiny.

No one EVER came looking for her.

Finally, we boldly asked the neighbor if we could buy her. She said we could keep her because "when she does come home, she paws at the door and bolts right back to your property." Oddly, this person does not see what's wrong with that story. :unsure:

I was so sick (still not diagnosed at the time)and upset about my cat, and this little doll appeared....so, really, she "saved " me too....I think of her this way: She's our GIFT! :) The universe provides??

Bless you for saving her from uncaring people who don't deserve the love of a kitten. I'm upset with my stepdaughter for leaving her sweet little Siamese outside and am *this* close to cat-napping her. These regal creatures deserve better! If I didn't have four already, I know exactly what I'd do.

And I may still do it! tongue.gif

Yea, as a humane society person said to me a little while ago 'there is a reason they are called housecats'. He had been sent to check on a kitty that had been mauled by a couple of unleashed dogs and then got hit by a car trying to get away. Poor thing was in rough shape. On a good note there were 4 people other than myself that stopped to help this kitty and we bundled her into a car and took her to an emergency animal hospital. I don't know if she survived. The humane society also tracked down and caught the young men who let the dogs run loose with the aid of our local police.

We were afraid we were going to be sued for "alienation of affection" by a neighbour (don't laugh, I know of such a situation with a neglected dog!). This poor wee kitty lived in a house with an "animal" door that would have given entry to the State of Texas (and who knows what else) (no magnet collars) along with her bossy big brother and a border collie. Mom worked all day and was in the bars half the night. While the collie did get walked (one plus mark) the cats were neglected and little Bobbie Jo never had a moment's piece. She took to sitting on the doorstep outside our slider and talking to us. I let her in and she promptly found the most comfortable chair and had the best sleep she had probably had in months. She used to do that often but we always sent her home when "mom" came home.

One snowy night when mom apparently couldn't make it back over the hill she showed up on our doorstep covered in snow, and my heart melted. Kept her all night and took her back when I saw mom next day. Mom said, defensively, "Well, I have a cat door" when I must have looked a bit reproachful.

Fast forward, and this sweet, pretty cat was looking all bedraggled and ill and I told mom she needed to take her to the vet (see what a bossy interfering neighbour I am :o ). She promised she would, the next day, but after she had left for work Bobbie Jo showed up on our doorstep. I called mom at work and she accused us of having had the cat because she couldn't find her! (well, I ask you, if you're going to take her to the vet before work the next morning you would have kept her in the night before, surely :rolleyes: ) I said I was going to take her to the vet but she said no, bring her to me at work. We had no cat at the time and after one attempt at taking her in the car without a carrier (you can imagine) I borrowed a carrier from a neighbour and drove the cat to her. Turned out she had almost sliced her tongue off, apparently from licking a can with rough edges. The vet sutured it back up and I don't know how well mom administered the antibiotics although she did seem to be recovering.

We went away for Christmas, and when we came back Bobbie Jo was gone. A neighbour said she had seen her looking ill one day, had gone to get her some water and when she came back the cat was gone, never to be seen again :angry: Her bossy brother, I think, ran away. Nevertheless, mom got a new kitty, but fortunately moved before I could see what she did to that one!! :ph34r:

I would have been very tempted to take the kitty in as an indoor cat and see if any ads were put in the paper or flyers around the neighborhood. The poor little thing I hope someone did just that and she is living comfortable and warm in a loving home.

This is so heartbreaking. There's only so much you can do. Unfortunately, some people shouldn't have pets of any kind if they can't properly care for them.

A friend on a rescue board had something similar happen. The neighbor's kitty kept showing up at his house in all sorts of horrible weather, cold and bedraggled. Long story short, he eventually took the kitty in and figured the owners would come looking for him but they never did. The kitty never wanted to go outside again and has been a part of his happy little cat family ever since. :)

Long story short, he eventually took the kitty in and figured the owners would come looking for him but they never did. ah, mushroom, don't feel bad. You did what you could! I wish we could save them all.

After all these stories, I am very glad that I pressed the neighbor for ownership of Bella then. After 2 years of killing what she could to eat, she sure enjoys the cushy couch, the warm crackling fire and the life she should have had from the beginning.

Right now, she is pestering me by tapping the keys on my laptop...I think she wants to add something...mndhdryrrrrrr/kjnnnkvjfkj

You did the best you could. It is quite possible that someone else may have taken her in. Oftentimes kitties in that sort of situation have multiple places they visit. Let's hope that was the case with her.

Don't beat yourself up . . . you did what you could at the time. I think we can all look back and think we should have done something differently. I know I could have on many occasions. sad.gif

      IBS-D vs Celiac

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

      Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in...

      After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash...

      learned I had a high PTH level in 2022 suspected to be due to low vit D got my vit D level up a bit but still have high PTH I am 70 yrs old (today in fact) I am looking for someone who also has hyperparathyroidism that might be caused by malabsorption

      I am on day 13 of eating gluten and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone...

I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.

      After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash vegetables. I noticed my stools were suddenly formed, if a bit narrow. I knew then that the diarrhea was probably food related not medication related. I tried following the fodmap diet but honestly it was just too complicated, I just lived with pooping 8x a day and wondering how I'd ever get and keep a job once my children were in school.  This past December I got my yearly bloodwork and my triglycerides were high. I looked into Dr. William Davis (wheat belly author) and he recommended going off wheat and other grains. This is the first time in my life I was reading labels to make sure there was no wheat. Within 2 weeks, not only were my stools formed and firm but I was only pooping twice a day, beautiful formed Bristol #4.  Dr. Davis allows some legumes, so I went ahead and added red lentils and beans. Nervous that the diarrhea would come back if I had IBS-D. Not only did it not come back, it just made my stools even bigger and beautiful. Still formed just with a lot more width and bulk. I've also been eating a lot of plant food like tofu, mushrooms, bell peppers, hummus etc which I thought was the cause of my diarrhea before and still, my stools are formed. In January I ran a genetics test because I knew you had to have the genes for celiac. The report came back with  DQ 2.2 plus other markers that I guess are necessary in order for it to be possible to have celiac. Apparently DQ 2.2 is the "rarer" kind but based on my report it's genetically possible for me to have celiac.  I know the next step is to bring gluten back so I can get testing but I am just not wanting to do that. After suffering with diarrhea for years I can't bring myself to do it right now. So that is where I am!

I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.
