So Far, Soy...bad :(

Wasn't sure where to put this topic because I kind of have a diagnosis based on a very positive blood test a few weeks ago, but I'm still getting the hang of things around here, so I hope it's ok.

I've been on the elimination for four days, days 2 to 4 I felt really good, barely any symptoms. So today (day 5), I decided to reintroduce soy. I had a bowl of edamame (steamed soy beans)..no soy sauce or anything, just a little salt.

It's about an hour later and I just had D, my stomach hurts, a little nauseous, and feel kinda "out of it".

I was really hoping that I would be okay with soy...but things aren't looking good :(

Sorry that soy seems to be out for you also but you aren't alone and at least you are figuring it out fairly quickly in. It took me years and much thinking I was constantly being CC'd by gluten-free foods to realize that the ones that were getting me also had soy. I did do the Enterolab soy testing to confirm it but my body really was giving me the answer. Hopefully you will be over the reaction soon.

Thanks to both of you! Yes, it is good I'm finding out early on, you're right. Since I had a reaction right away, I don't think it's necessary for me to have any more servings of it (I read you're supposed to have three servings of the food on the day of reintroduction and then back to the original diet for 4-7 days, noting any symptoms).

But, yeah, the unfortunate part is that I feel like crap and have no idea how long it will last. I took a sublingual B12 and am trying to drink lots of water. I heard that Benadryl might help but I'm not sure I want to take it, yet (any thoughts?).

I think newly diagnosed celiacs should be given a couple months of paid sick leave from work LOL It's really tough to go through this whole process and still be expected to function as per normal.

Yea I do agree that we should be able to get 'sick leave' or temporary disability if our symptoms are severe. You might want to talk to your doctor about it.

As to adding stuff when you do an elimination you need to add the item for a week OR until a reaction occurs. The reason for that is because it can take time for an intolerance to build up as explained to me by my allergist when he put me on an elimination diet. Obviously you have reacted and when a reaction happens you drop the item.

Awesome :) Thank you for clarifying!

You are re-introducing soy pretty quickly (4 days). IMHO it would be better to wait several months before trying something with a known risk. In the meantime you could concentrate on adding foods (slowly) that you don't believe will sicken you. That way (if you are right) you are giving your body a good chance to heal and recover. Soy is one of the top 8 allergens in the USA so it is not a surprise if it bothers many people. Especially sensitive souls like us-en. (Insert batting eyelashes here). :)

You want to build up a list of foods you can eat safely early on.

I missed that you had only been gluten-free for that short a time. I agree with this. Give yourself a bit more time to heal. My allergist wanted me symptom free, at least as far as the D goes, for at least 2 to 3 weeks before I started adding stuff back in.

You might want to try Edaname in the pod, washing, shelling and washing first to be sure it isn't cc'ed. Then again, if you can't get uncontaminated soy, why bother. Unless, that is, you really love Edaname.

I do love edamame, but not so much that I would have to rinse it and shell it, etc. Besides..I love soy sauce, more...and I can't have that. LOL At some point I will try the tamari, though. Soy made me ill for three days. I'm going to wait longer this time before reintroducing something. It's just so tiring. NEED TO GIVE MYSELF TIME TO HEAL....ahhh yes...patience, patience, patience! I look back at it now and feel ridiculous for trying it so soon, I'm just anxious about all of it and want things to be better NOW haha PATIENCE...............

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
