Just Made The Decision To Cancel Family Vacation!

Hi!

Well it's official........ my DH and I just decided to cancel our family vacation. :( I still have not heard from my Dr about my Celiac Panel results and my symptoms are getting worse by the day. I am soooo very afraid of being trapped in a car for 10 + hours there and back.

Of course I offered to stay home by my self but for my family that was not an option. I am so dissappointed. I HATE being the reason for the cancellation. I truly feel like I am letting my family down! :(

Life just stinks sometimes!!!

Well I guess that's all I needed to say. thanks for letting me vent!!

My reason for waiting is just incase I get a negative and my Dr wants to do a biopsy. If it wasn't for that I would most definitley go gluten free ASAP!!!

That and we were supposed to leave in about 10 days. If by some chance I got my results this week would I have time to deglutenize myself?

We just don't think it's enough time.

Can you reschedule your vacation? Go somewhere else, do something else? Don't cancel the family fun, just do it differently.:)

Maybe a few small vacations? A few days in St. Louis? Afew days at Silver dollar City? That sort of thing. We used to do those types of vacations.

I'm no expert, but in my son's case, from the time the doctor decided to do an endoscopy and when we did it was a time lapse of maybe 7-8 weeks. From memory I was thinking 2-3 weeks of eating gluten before the scope was sufficient.

Have you called your dr to see if the results are in yet? Sometimes they just don't call if it was negative. Or something may have gone wrong in sending out the labwork. When I got my allergy testing last month I called two weeks later becaus ei hadn't heard anythign and when my dr went to check on the tests he found out my blood samples had not yet been sent for testing. They were still sitting in the lab where I had the blood drawn. Do call to follow up if you haven't yet.

We actually have tickets to a Cardinals game in late July, the game is on a thursday so we thought about making it a long weekend! I am worried about the cardinals game too. If I do have Celiac disease will I be able to eat anything at the stadium. Our tickets are in the Bank of American club and they are all inclusive (meals & drinks furnished). But I will worry about that when it draws closer.

Someof the baseball stadiums have a gluten-free stand. I don"t think it's in the included club food. Call the disability or customer service office to find out.

There is a St. Louis area Celiac support group on Yahoo (stlouisalerts), and I have seen several postings on gluten-free food/drink at Busch Stadium. Check it out. All you need to join is a free Yahoo account, and you can research and also post questions. I subscribe to it (get email alerts on postings) because I have relatives in the area and go there occasionally. Last fall my son's school went to state in soccer. We went and stayed with my brother, and visited a great gluten-free bakery and had gluten-free pizza that was awesome.

Having just returned from a three-week vacation in Europe I would say don't cancel your vacation! It really is easier than you think. When you worry about something that COULD happen and avoid it it is called fear avoidance - I had that for ages with my horrific chronic back pain and fibromyalgia. I would always ask, "What if...". Usually those what ifs don't happen. No narcotics or anything helps my pain. Zip. But I absolutely refused to allow it and my Celiac to prevent me from doing what I love most - spend time at our house in gorgeous Croatia. It has given me so much more confidence now. I handled the horrible flights (barely but I did) so I feel now I could do pretty much anything.

I had to endure very long flights, many layovers, flight delays, etc. (long story) in excruciating pain as well as dealing with celiac. On one flight I was in so much pain I begged the flight attendant to let me lie on the floor. Of course that was not allowed. However, it was still worth it (in retrospect - at the time not so much). The freedom of doing what I wanted was incredibly liberating.

My husband and I were in Croatia and Italy at food and wine events, superb restaurants, etc. and always managed. I took lots of gluten-free snacks along from Canada and was very prepared for every eventuality. I never allowed myself to be stuck without something to eat. It took lots of planning and organizing but it worked! We are already looking at seat sales for Fall. :D

So, if I were you, I would re-think your plans. Take lots of Imodium and do it. With me the thought of something is almost always worse than the reality. I was so worked up about going that I grew very anxious and requested short-term Ativan. I do not have to do that any more. I control it - it does not control me.

I am looking forward to Rving this summer. You can stop whenever you want. You always have a clean bathroom. And you are bringing your kitchen with you so food isn't an issue. No unpacking.

Not knowing really is difficult, isn't it? It is hard to move forward until you know something either way. I really hope you hear something Friday so you at least know how to proceed.

Believe me - I thought of cancelling our trip many, many times but just did it, although I know it would hurt incredibly. It was a huge chance but I took it and man, am I glad I did! Having illnesses is a very unfortunate part of our lives - they can make you or break you. I choose to live in spite of it. I do not want to regret not doing the things I love. Going ahead and doing things really helps conquer fears (so cliche but true). Fear of pain and dealing with celiac disease really ate away at me a lot. In fact, it started consuming me and I was not liking what I was becoming. Or at least my reaction.

I also took along Gluten Defense. It is a capsule you take rarely if you are unsure of what you are having is truly safe or not. It is not intended to allow you to eat gluten - only for peace of mind just in case. It may be something worth looking into (if you hear anything Friday!!).

The best of luck. I truly know the heartache, worries and pressures you are going through.

I'm not sure I understand why it matters what the results are? I mean, you'll want to know eventually. But for now why can't you just go gluten free? You might feel SO much better than the thought of the trip won't be too awful. If the test comes out positive, then okay. If it doesn't, but you feel better, then it doesn't matter. :)

And I know the answer, probably. It's that if it's negative then you want to get an endoscopy, and for the endoscopy you're supposed to be eating gluten for a certain amount of time. So my question would be, if you feel better why does it matter? (and that's been the topic of more than one post on this board).

I say go gluten free and go enjoy your vacation.

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

      You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
