My daughter was sick all weekend. Just like the pre gluten-free days. We racked our brains trying to figure out the culprit. It was right in my cabinet. She had bought Rice Krispie Treats and told me they were gluten-free. She had looked at the label and it said "Contains: Wheat and Milk". It didn't list wheat so she thought she was in the clear. I could have sworn our neighbor who has Celiac said they were gluten-free so I didn't even LOOK at that damn box. Malt flavoring is the second ingredient on the label. d'oh! Texted my neighbor who said "those aren't gluten-free!!!!"

Well we figured it out so we both are relieved. She was so sick last night and she had two of them yesterday....she kept saying "no more gluten". We learned a valuable lesson!

It sucks being a newbie sometimes. At least we found it!

Darn it, that sucks, but it does happen, and the good news is that you will never forget about Rice Krispie treats again!

My daughter and I have been at this 6 months and we had a similar issue about a month ago with her symptoms coming back and me not knowing why. It turned out that HyVee had stocked the gluten-full Applegate Farms chicken tenders where the gluten-free chicken nuggets used to be. Same color of writing on the box, and the HyVee tag underneath even said gluten free . . . barely looked at the box! I felt so awful. And I was NOT happy with HyVee, but it was still my responsibility. :(

Kellogg's does make gluten free Rice Krispies, though (it will say right on the front of the box -- not the regular ones!). Grab a box and some gluten-free marshmallows (I get Great Value or Kraft Jet Puffed) and you can make some treats together. :D

I keep a box of Cocoa Pebbles cereal bars handy. They're great to grab as a quick snack or on my way out of the house. I keep telling myself I'll make my own Rice Krispies treats but I'm just not up to it lately.

Thanks for both replies. I have the cocoa pebbles bars in my cupboard now. It was just so darn stupid.

You & The Kid are not the first to be fooled by Rice Kripsies and the Treats.. Corn Flakes are also a tricky adversary. And butterscotch chips....3 of us looked at those & still missed the word malt. :(

Been there, done that. We ALL have! Be sure you check the labels every single time you buy something. Ingredients can change.

A friend brought over some mochi balls (ice cream in sticky rice) that he said were gluten-free. His wife is gluten-free so I figured he had checked. I ate a few, then checked the label. Wrong order. Check the label first, then eat! It turned out the company had changed the ingredients since he bought them last and added wheat flour. I had four days of anxiety for that mistake. :(

I did that with Rice Krispie treats during my junior year of high school. I was attending a semester school program in a small town in Wisconsin, and the giris' house mother assured me they were gluten free. Nope!

Trader Joes has a gluten-free, DF one. We loved them till we lost palm oil/coconut. :( That was a sad day here!

Roda Rising Star

Yep, someone at summer camp last May gave my youngest son two of those. My son was still shy about telling adults "NO" when it came to food(and he had fun eating them). The staff was not informed by the director that he was not to be fed anything of theirs(Yes the director assured me this wouldn't happen :( ). So mistakes happen and we all learned a lesson from it. My now 7 year old knows that it is alright to speak up for himself that he is not being disrespectful if he does and I learned to be more sympathetic with the staff, because they truely were not informed and it was an honest mistake.

I also glutened both my boys a few months ago when I gave them Allegra orally disentegrating tablets. I had called the manufacturer to see if any Allegra products were gluten free and they said all the pills were. I took that as the children's liquid wasn't safe. I couldn't find the children's pills so I got the ODT. Duh, not technally a "pill". I've been gluten free for over three years now and still managed to gluten the boys with the Allegra ODT. So don't beat yourself up. We all make mistakes. I hope she feels better soon!

You can make these at home gluten free: All you need is the gluten free Rice Krispies that they sell now in stores, Kraft Jet Puffed marshmellows, and Land o' Lakes butter. Done and done! I've made them several times and no issues at all!

Made the mistake myself a month ago. I assumed a rice cereal was gluten-free and the malt on the label just went right by me. Lesson learned.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
