Possible For Child To Be Overweight And Have Celiac's Disease?

Hi there! I have had a lingering feeling my son (now 5) has celiac's from the time he was a baby. I kept blowing it off since he has always been chubby and I always associated celiac's with diarrhea and thin people. Well, he will go 5-6 days and not have a bowel movement. Then, when he does it is a TON and clay colored and very foul smelling (that is an understatement). Well, now his teacher suggested a PT eval because of his lethargy and his random falling down and lack of focus. They diagnosed him with low muscle tone in his upper body and the first thing she asked me was whether he had been tested for Celiac's disease. She said that he had a lot of the symptoms that Celiac kids exhibit. He had a period of about a month where he threw up every day, had severe abdominal pain and was completely lactose intolerant. They did an x-ray which just showed an abnormal gas pattern and they dismissed it as a virus. I am an RN and a GI doc on our floor told me up to 11% of children with Celiacs are overweight. I will be so upset if this has been his problem the whole time! I made a doc appointment for Wednesday with his general pract. and I am going to hard-ball them for the blood test. I am so afraid because of his weight they will dismiss it.

My DD was dx 2 yrs ago. At the time she was in the 90h % for ht and wt and she is in the 95 % now. We are having a hard time maintaining/losing wt since her veggie intake is limited. Also, my Aunt was Dx 4 yrs ago and is also overweight and has been most of her life.

So ..not all Celiacs are underweight.

Yes, absolutely- Celiac can actually cause people to gain weight rather than lose it. There is a Celiac specialist in the US who wrote an article about a woman who present with stomach ache at the hospital, it was very severe. She had it on and off for years and years and she was really overweight, anyhow - no one had ever tested her for Celiac because she was overweight - he did and endo to have a look - and of course, it was celiac and he said as soon as she stopped eating gluten the weight started to fall off.

The fact is - most medical staff have NO idea about celiac. You need to do your research and make sure you are more informed than they are - because then they can't just pat you on the head and tell you to be on your way!

I'm not officially diagnosed with celiac (yet--that saga continues haha) but I went gluten free at 16 to combat headaches and "gastritis." I was always a big kid (high end of both height and weight), and was overweight in my early teen years. Even today, almost two years gluten-free, I'm not especially skinny. Don't know if that helps, but there you go.

I'm celiac and my son is as well. Weve been diagnosed with flying colors! All of my extended family are overweight and have worlds of health problems but nobody has tested for celiac.

I was overweight my whole life.. Tried so many lowest or low call high gluten/ gain diets over the years and couldn't lose it.

Gave up gluten then grains.. 42lbs lost in 7 months with a 1600-2200 cal a day diet. I know now how much inflammation I was carrying and my body was storing visceral fat that it gave up when my immune system wasn't being attacked by my food.

If you are overweight because of celiac, it is common once you go gluten free that the pounds drop off whether you "diet" (i.e., low calorie) or not, so long as you gluten free diet. It is a total myth that you have to be skinny and anorexic looking to be celiac. My sister was -- I wasn't. Same genes. :)

At the local support group, there is a child who is 10 and very overweight and very celiac. He also has diabetes. I would for sure have him tested to try and head off any other auto-immune diseases that might come with it being ignored. It sure can't hurt. My daughter was in the 80% for weight when she was diagnosed. She has trimmed down in the 5 months gluten free.

Very common. The skinny celiac kid in the medical books is more of a rarity these days. Be very insistent on getting the full celiac panel- ttg IGA and ttg IGG, total IGA, deamidated gluten peptides and endomysial antibodies. Most docs don't even know which tests to order and only order 1 or 2 of the older ones. Beware there is a high rate of false negatives, so even if he tests negative, try the diet!

I am on day 13 of eating gluten  and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone and/or the renal calcium leak.    I have spent the past 15 years working hard to improve my health. I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
