Incredible Irritability While Healing

Hi all, hope everyone is doing well.

I was wondering if anyone else experiences this while healing from a glutening incident? I used to think that I would become incredibly angry and irritable and depressed right after being glutened (which is usually my first clue or sign to think if I had eating anything that was cc), and then I'd have anxiety and mild depression for three weeks after .. but this time it's different! I'm angry all the time, and it has been two weeks since I ate that darned cc bresaola!

Is this normal, does anyone also stay irritated for the whole healing period, or should I start wondering if there are any other sources of CC?

I've found that dairy and the gums used in dental impression goo give me extreme irribilty.

I think hormones can enter into it too?

Might be :-/ I Dunno.. I wasn't having irritability problems before getting glutened and I'm using the same toothpaste. I've tried most of the toothpastes available and am using sensodyne ProNamel now.. There aren't many options left in the stores

It is normal for me to be irritable while healing from a reaction .

I recently attempted to add back a food to my diet. It got me but good. My reaction was swift and devastating (both physically and emotionally ). The emotional upheaval was staggering, I am still recovering.

I feel pretty "off" for a long time after a gluten CC. Nearly 3 weeks last time :(

In addition to the recurrence of severe joint/muscle pain, anxiety, cognitive impairment, & insomnia, I have a major swing in moods. I hate that part the most. :(

I call it the return of the seven dwarves: weepy, cranky, racy, spacey, dopey, angry and achy.

Not my personality at all to be in such a funky mood-- and this is how I know I have been "hit".

Tell yourself you know what it is that is causing it and that you're going to get past it in time.

In the beginning I found lots of things would set me off...not just gluten. Sugar or MSG or processed foods. I'm not saying these are setting YOU off, I'm just saying that other things may temporarily (or permanently) do what gluten did.

It's tough. I went in the bathroom at work one day and kicked the wall. I ate Rice Works chips and went psychodellic and broke out in a rash. I ate chocolate covered nuts and broke out, and had heart palps.

I won't touch Rice Works with a 10 ft pole now, but chocolate covered nuts are fine:).

Overall, the weirdest of it lasted 3 months or so, and that was after I got a good handle on the triggers.

I would suggest getting your thyroid levels checked at your doctor visit, as well as vitamin levels. Both could cause the depression/irritability/anger.

I hadn't thought to mention it, but yes, too much sugar and MSG?

--those mess with me too. Moody, foggy and out of sorts, heart palps, headaches, blech. UGH.

Good advice about thyroid and vit/mineral levels, Prickly. I guess I thought Dani had checked those already?

This week when I got myself glutened on top of feeling totally mentally checked out I felt like biting the head off anyone or anything that looked at me sideways. Not a good attitude when I'm babysitting an obnoxious one year old but we managed okay without me traumatizing him for the rest of his life.

I did Angry in a big way before going gluten-free. I think I burnt the anger factor out of me. Weepy returns big time, and Spacey, Dopey and Achy all visit.

I got angry/irritable too when I got glutened & also when I had the reaction to the Quinoa Dani. Good idea about checking the thyroid especially since it takes so long to get the doc appt. there.

I haven't gotten my thyroid checked (no insurance, no money), but I had uncontrillable rages and 24/7 weeping for days with vitamin deficiencies. Vitamin B12 was what I suspected, and that would make sense in your case - you got glutened, and until you heal again you aren't absorbing any B12 from your food.

Just a guess.

I usually only get angry for two or three days after being glutened, but this time.. it's been two weeks and I've been so angry and irritated very frequently. I was so angry today.. I couldn't contain myself. Hubs and I aren't talking to each other now. I feel so depressed. Sorry for whining. It just sucks because we've been planning this weekend for so long and it's ruined :-( and he told me "are you going to ruin this weekend too?".

I don't have other symptoms. I never get tummy aches.. (and I hope I don't offend anyone) but I'm wishing I did, then I'd at least know what was going on. Maybe I'm just an egoistic nut who likes shouting.

I'm not even feeling weak, particularly sleep, or too foggy. I'm just, mad.

I don't eat any sugar. I tried 80% lactose and soy free chocolate three days ago but it set my DH off so I stopped it. I don't know what MSG is. The only other thing I recently added was cashews (a week ago). Could I be reacting to them?

I did start polishing my nails again as well.. but I made sure to wash my hands once I was done.. to make sure anything lose went off..

I haven't been to the doctor yet. Can you believe it? I don't know how long they're gonna let me rot here. They said in four weeks five or six weeks ago, and now they're saying sometime in may. I have a feeling they're gonna say "nothing is wrong with you" anyway. I just know it.

I got my thyroid checked two years ago maybe?

Do you have your lab results from 2 years ago for your thyroid?

Is there any way you can get an independent lab to test your vitamin levels? If you can see deficiencies and substitute accordingly it may help. Low b's, d and iron can do terrible things to your mood, energy.

Is there any way you can get an independent lab to test your vitamin levels? If you can see deficiencies and substitute accordingly it may help. Low b's, d and iron can do terrible things to your mood, energy.

I'll ask for the lab results on Wednesday. We have a short holiday until Tuesday. I think that they also checked B levels and they were normal.

By the way. I went to the pharmacy to get probiotics, and they didn't have any without soy and the pharmacist wasn't open to the idea of custom probiotics. She told me I needed a doctor for that. It seems I'll have to buy them online.

I hope you're successful one way or the other. Remember, though, your body can be very different now vs. 2 years ago. Though, if you were low then and haven't supplemented I can't imagine it would have improved.

DANI, my dear, I am sorry you are struggling so much right now.

I understand totally-- as my first six months gluten-free were

so turbulent and I had already had a horrible 3 years before that.

It is discouraging, but that does not mean you are not getting well.

But one thing I know is, you need to view all this in perspective.

You are healing!!

You will feel better in time, I promise

you need a ((HUG)) --because we care about you-- all of us here in the States!!!

and you need to laugh a little. :)

Sorry for the delayed response.. just thought I'd leave an update when I started feeling better to skip the whining :-P

I've been gardening as much as I could the past three days in hopes to manage my temper. It didn't really help as I was bursting out from the smallest things ;-( I noticed also that I get extra angry and crazy when I'm hungry, to point of losing all reason! (yikes, best to be kept fed)

I was actually surprised that I managed to do so much! I read that a lot of you get so fatigued that you could barely type? but I managed to dig, pull, push and so on in the garden. It was hard but I did it, and the endorphins lifted my spirit (they were just what I needed!). I didn't get irritated even once today so I'm guessing that whatever was going on might be passing? but my immunity has dropped drastically though.. my gums, lymph nodes, and throat are all so painful, specifically when I eat.

Try eating small portions & include protein--throughout the day.

Your blood sugars may be spiking/dipping.

Vit C helps with gum issues.

      I followed the Autoimmune Protocol Diet which is really strict for a while, but later other foods can be added back into your diet.  Following the AIP diet strictly allows you digestive system to heal and the inflammation to calm down.  Sort of like feeding a sick baby easy to digest food instead of spicy pizza.   It's important to get the inflammation down because chronic inflammation leads to other health problems.  Histamine is released as part of the autoimmune response to gluten.  High histamine levels make you feel bad and can cause breathing problems (worsening asthma), cardiovascular problems (tachycardia), and other autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, diabetes) and even mental health problems. Following the low histamine version of the AIP diet allows the body to clear the histamine from our bodies.  Some foods are high in histamine.  Avoiding these makes it easier for our bodies to clear the histamine released after a gluten exposure.   Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and calm it down.  Vitamin D is frequently low in Celiacs.  The B Complex vitamins and Vitamin C are needed to clear histamine.   Supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals boosts your intestines' ability to absorb them while healing.   Keep in mind that gluten-free facsimile foods, like gluten-free bread, are not enriched with added vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts are.   They are empty calories, no nutritional value, which use up your B vitamins in order to turn the calories into fuel for the body to function.   Talk to your doctor or nutritionist about supplementing while healing.  Take a good B Complex and extra Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine (shown to promote gut health).  Most B Complex vitamins contain thiamine mononitrate which the body cannot utilize.  Meats and liver are good sources of B vitamins.   Dr. Sarah Ballantyne wrote the book, the Paleo Approach.  She's a Celiac herself.  Her book explains a lot.   I'm so glad you're feeling better and finding your balance!

      So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure!

      Some people prefer eating gluten before bed, then sleeping through the worst symptoms at night.  You might want to try that and see if that makes any difference.   Several slices of toast for breakfast sounds okay.  Just try to work up to the Ten grams of gluten.  Cookies might only have a half of a gram of gluten.  The weight of the whole cookie is not the same as the amount of gluten in it.  So do try to eat bread things with big bubbles, like cinnamon rolls.   Yeah, I'm familiar with the "death warmed over" feeling.  I hope you get the genetic test results quickly.  I despise how we have to make ourselves sick to get a diagnosis.  Hang in there, sweetie, the tribe is supporting you.

I did the exam this morning, my doctor actually suggested me to take something called "Celiac duo test" in which I first do the genetic test and if it's positive, then I'll have to do the antigen blood test. I have to attend 1 month until my results are ready, so I have some weeks to increase the amount of gluten I eat daily. It will be hard because my health is not the best right now, but I also did a blood test to cheek my nutritional deficiencies. The results will arrive on Tuesday, so I can ask my doctor what should I do to control my symptoms and blood levels during this month. For now I'm resting and paying attention to what I eat— at least I don’t look like a vampire who just woke up, like I did yesterday. I'm still scared because is the first time I've felt this sick, but this is the right moment to turn things around for the better.  I realized that if I eat gluten at lunch I cannot finish the day properly, I become severely tired and sometimes my stomach hurts a lot - let's not talk about the bloating that starts later. Do you think is it ok to eat gluten just in the morning, like some cookies and slices of bread for breakfast?
