Big Girl Beverages That Aren't Distilled

Some day I dream of having another adult drink and I'm finding that I can't tolerate distilled alcohol/vinegar (no more vinegar martinis- UGH!) so my question is this: Are there any gluten free alcoholic beverages that aren't distilled? I'm wondering about gluten-free beer, hard cider, wine and champagne. I know nothing about how alcohol is produced. And if anyone knows of a gluten-free, distilled vinegar free salad dressing, please do tell! Thanks, Big Girl Beverly who hopes for a Beverage

I would try the cider. It's made from fermented apples (you can have fermented things, right?). I can only get Woodchuck where I live, and I like the dark and dry best.

Wine and champagne would be fine too, they are both made from fermented grapes and contain no grains (unless they added some kind of flavoring afterward, I haven't seen anything like that though).

I know nothing about gluten-free beers because I can't get those where I live.

Just be carefull with champagne. I almost slipped at a wedding and drank a malted champagne. I am glad I caught that!!

Tequila is gluten free as long as its 100% Agave. Jose Quervo has mixes that are gluten-free. De Kuyper Shnapps are gluten-free, as Schnapps are made from the juice of whatever they say they are like apple or peach. The peppermint or Gold stuff I'm not so sure about. Most clear Rums are gluten-free.

I do a drink with fruit juice ( those new Dole Blends are awesome) Tequila and Peach Shnapps in place of the Triple Sec. Triple Sec is made from Orange Peels so is gluten-free, but I like the peach flavor better.

I've had tons of fun with bartenders, explaining what I could and couldn't have and then having them come up with something for me. If you're ever at Gulf Stream in Los Angeles, ask for an Andre's #2. Its a gluten-free drink he came up with for me that had me on the floor.

My problem is anything with sulphites makes me sneeze uncontrollably.

I have found the only drinks not distilled from grains are potato vodka, tequilla, brandy, and rum - in addition to rest mentioned here. The shnapps I have looked at is distilled from grain and I think Triple Sec is distilled from fruit. I cannot drink ANY drinks distilled from ANY grains. I also cannot tolerate yeast which rules out wine, champaign, and all other gluten-free drinks/beers.

Due to my yeast intolerance, I cannot eat anything with vinegar - I have even tried the rice vinegar and it still bothers me. There is yeast in the process (same with wine). Therefore, if you have a problem with vinegar, I would look at maybe an intolerance for yeast - just a suggestion, nothing more, nothing less.

I find I'm fine with wine but cider gives me terrible D. I have no idea why but it's equally as bad as when I drink beer. I also like margaritas (as long as the mix is gluten-free). Unfortunately wine is the only "casual" thing I can handle unless I want to get rip-roarin drunk.

Is the beer gluten free?

No, I was just using that as an example of the severity of my reaction to hard cider.

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
