When Does Bloating Go Away?

I have been gluten free for two months. I was relatively asymptomatic prior to my diagnosis - it was a bone density specialist who suspected and had me tested for Celiac. I can't say that I feel any differently after two months- but again I didn't feel poorly before going gluten free. However - I do notice after most meals I feel quite bloated. Is this typical? It's hard for me to know if I've been glutened - since I never really had the classic symptoms - but I was thinking that after two months being gluten free ( I think) - that I shouldn't be feeling bloated so often.

For some people the bloating seems to subside right away. I have been gluten free 6 months and am just begining to notice my bloating changing. Sometimes I am bloated and sometimes I am not. I also think my bloating is more like 4 months pregnant rather than 5. That is an improvement. My body seems to be working really hard on recovery. I keep hearing tummy growling, feel pangs, so the deflating helps to make it easier to bear.

There, I dared to tackle this question. I am on an intense supplement program and have an active life.

It took me about 2 months for my overall bloating to go away. The extreme bloat I would get following a gluteny meal stopped immediately.

That being said, if I don't eat well I do get bloated; it's not extreme but I notice it. Milk products bloat me up. Deli meats get me as well. Lately i've been eating too much halloween chocolate and my tummy is a bit bloated.

I also see bloat around my face when this happens.

best wishes.

Mine seems to come and go and I haven't pegged it to any particular food yet. However, the bloat from my gluten-free diet is much different from what I felt while still eating gluten-rich foods. When i got glutened recently I felt like someone was pumping air into my insides and it was a sense of feeling like I had a basketball hiding under my shirt. But outwardly there were no signs at all of bloating. Crazy stuff!

I've been gluten-free for almost 4 months and still have it, along with the weight gain I had instant issues with...every day I hope it will start to turn around, but it has yet to!

For me the bloating didn"t go away till i removed all traces of dairy from my diet, I was also 2 months into gluten-free when i removed dairy as a sugestion from a fellow forum member.

Thanks all- I still eat dairy - almost daily - yogurt, cheese - since I am also dealing with osteoporosis. I will try to be a bit more aware when this bloat happens. I know it's usually after a meal - even if the meal is primarily salads or fruit.

You might try out Lactaid chewable tablets with your dairy. For me, it helps a lot. I also avoid the dairy products with the most lactose (milk & ice cream) and stick to hard cheese and other lower-lactose foods.

I'm going on four months gluten-free and am just getting on-off bloating which is way better than the fulltime inflation I felt before. It's also shrunk from basketball to a small soccer ball lol...

Help me out here. Lauren Dam gluten-free beer from Spain is listed as gluten free. Yet its made from Barley Malt. I thought barley and any form had gluten. Anybody have any more information about it?

Ferritin levels.  And see what your hemoglobin looks like too, that will tell you if you are anemic?  You can have 'low normal' levels that will not be flagged by blood tests.  I had 'low normal' levels, my lab reading was. c12, just over what was considered normal, but I had small benign lesion on my tongue, and sometimes a sore mouth, and a consultant maxillofacial ordered an iron infusion for me as he felt my levels were too low and if he  raised them to 40, it would help.   Because you are not feeling 100% it might be worth looking at your levels, then discussing with your doctor if they are low normal.  But I stress, don't supplement iron without your levels being monitored, too much is dangerous.

Hi Katht -  I sympathize with your struggles in following a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. I found out that I had Celiac Disease a few months before I turned 70. I just turned 89 and it has taken me almost 20 years to attain a fairly normal intestinal  function. I also lost a lot of weight, down to 100 lb. down from about 140 lb. What Trents wrote you was very true for me. I am still elimination foods from my diet. One person suggested you keep a food diary and that is a good idea but it is probably best just to do an elimination diet. There are several ne and maybe one for celiacs. I used one for a while and started with plain rice and zucchini and then added back other foods to see if I reacted or not. That helped a great deal but what I did not realise that it would only very small amounts of some foods to cause inflammation in my intestine. Within the last few years I have stopped eating any trace amounts of hot peppers, corn and soy(mostly in supplements) and nuts, (the corn in Tylenol was giving me stomach aches and the nuts were causing foot pains). Starting an elimination diet with white rice is better than brown rice that has some natural toxins. In addition it is very important to drink sufficient plain water. You can find out how much to drink for your height and weight online. I do have difficulty drinking 48 ounces of water but just recently have found an electrolyte supplement that helps me stay well hydrated, Adding the water and electrolytes may reduce muscle cramps and gag spams you wrote about. . Also buy some anti-gluten enzyme capsules to take with meals. I use GliadinX advertised here. These are a lot of things to do at one time as they reflect my 20 years of experience. I hope you do what you can manage to do over time. Good luck and take care.
