Caramel Dessert Toppings
Gemini replied to CeciliaCeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Generally, they do not contain gluten.....what does the label say? Shopping guides are a poor resource because things change so much and many are not current by the time they are published. I am not familiar with these brands of toppings but the ones I have bought were gluten-free. Is there an ingredient you are worried about? -
ARCHIVED Enriched Rice - Really gluten-free?
Gemini replied to Erica Rodman's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If there were any wheat at all in the box of rice, it would have to be listed as an ingredient to adhere to the labeling laws. Enriched foods are generally enriched with vitamins and minerals to replace what was lost in the processing of the food. I have never heard of wheat being an issue in the enrichment process and it is not an issue which you see on... -
ARCHIVED This Might Be A Sensitive Subject But I Must Ask...
Gemini replied to Matchoo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is very interesting, however, the question I have is that this was not a vaginal challenge. The mouth and rectum are part of the GI tract so it would make sense that an oral challenge may ultimately be developed for diagnosis purposes because, as we all know, if it's your mouth on any level, it's in your gut. The same could be said, apparently, for... -
ARCHIVED This Might Be A Sensitive Subject But I Must Ask...
Gemini replied to Matchoo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would say that this is not a Celiac reaction then.....by all accounts, gluten has to be absorbed into the GI tract for a true Celiac reaction to occur. This includes all those people who may be asymptomatic or have neurological associated Celiac Disease, referred to as atypical Celiac Disease. From all I have read, which is extensive, it absolutely has... -
ARCHIVED This Might Be A Sensitive Subject But I Must Ask...
Gemini replied to Matchoo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I stand by my information on condom use and I would bet that if you told Dr. Peter Green that you thought gluten could be absorbed into your intestinal tract, via the vagina, he's probably be kind in his reply when he told you that's nonsense. The intestinal tract is a closed system with only 2 openings for use, with good reason. If someone has a wheat allergy... -
ARCHIVED This Might Be A Sensitive Subject But I Must Ask...
Gemini replied to Matchoo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This may be a sensitive answer but here goes....unless you are putting them in your mouth, you will not have a problem with lubricated condoms. Remember, you have to ingest something into your GI tract for a reaction to occur. From a personal standpoint, this was my BC method of choice (when I actually needed to be worried about it!)and I never, ever... -
ARCHIVED Fixing One Problem Causes Another
Gemini replied to kimis's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have Hashi's and if you feel like the thyroid dose you are on is not enough, have your blood work done to see what your levels are. Are you taking any hormone for this problem or have you not gone there yet? The most important thing you can do is stay strictly gluten free because that should slow down the attack on your thyroid by calming down your immune... -
ARCHIVED Obscure Sources Of Gluten?
Gemini replied to David in Seattle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
David....I highly suggest you read Dr. Peter Green's newest version of "Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic. It's about as excellent a reference book as there is. He goes into detail about what you have to do in reality to live gluten free successfully. It is not absolutely necessary to use gluten-free topical products, unless you have an additional skin... -
That's exactly what I do, Ken. The last time I flew coach was a short flight south to see the parents and I nearly jumped out of the plane! Honestly, I think there should be a ban on stinky fast food being brought onto flights. It was a tiny plane and I thought I was going to hurl, the smell was so bad. Couple that with feeling like a sardine (I am a tiny...

I think the whole problem of airline cutbacks stems from the attitude of most people that they want to fly everywhere for $100.00 RT. I totally side with the airlines on this one. The cost of running an airline has gone way, way up as they are fuel dependent and we all know how much fuel costs today. Prices go up and down like crazy. I also believe in paying...

ARCHIVED Off The Chart Ttg Again, Type 1 Diabetic
Gemini replied to kaiess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good luck, Kathy, and I am very happy you got answers for your son at such a young age. I know it is hard with a double diagnosis of Celiac and Type 1 diabetes but think of all that damage that will be averted! And yes.....kids are amazing! He handled it well and your attitude will greatly affect how well he accepts this also. I wish you well! -
ARCHIVED Falling Off The Gluten-Free Wagon
Gemini replied to kare101's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The simple truth is very appropriate in life today, as it always has been. Your references to fat people was nonsense....you are comparing apples to oranges. Anyone who willingly eats gluten, no matter how new to the game they are, has made a choice and if they don't like a realistic answer when they post on line to a support group, they need to grow up and... -
ARCHIVED Kettle Cuisine Soups
Gemini replied to Juliebove's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have tried most of their soups and I have to agree with your daughter....they are just OK. The only one I buy on a regular basis is the potato mushroom soup. My biggest problem with them and most of the processed gluten-free stuff is they are way too salty. There just isn't anything better than homemade soup, made in your own kitchen! -
ARCHIVED Falling Off The Gluten-Free Wagon
Gemini replied to kare101's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with you completely, Jestgar. I know this transition can be hard for those living in area's where gluten-free food may not be falling off the grocery shelves but people have a choice of whether or not they want to be sick. If they keep cheating, they are choosing to be sick. I see this in my family all the time and yes, I get the same reaction as... -
There are no airlines which serve gluten-free meals between Hawaii and Guam? My point was to fly whatever airline provides the best service and I know there are many who serve gluten-free meals. Europe is VERY gluten-free meal friendly probably because of the incidence of Celiac there. I think this is really only a problem with international, long haul...

The easiest thing to do is not give Continental any business. Many other airlines, especially those who are not American flag carriers like Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and many others, do have excellent gluten free meals served and I have found the service to be much superior to American based airlines. Never have had a problem getting good food on...

ARCHIVED Alcoholic Beverage Products
Gemini replied to ajsceliak's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wikipedia is a poor source of information as it can be modified by anyone. I would stick to trusted medical sources or ask psawyer......he's a MUCH better source than Wiki! The man knows his stuff! -
ARCHIVED Alcoholic Beverage Products
Gemini replied to ajsceliak's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wine is 100% gluten free. There has been talk on this forum of wineries which use some sort of paste on their oak barrels, which may contain gluten, but I have yet to ever become sick from drinking wine and I drink wine everyday. I am extremely sensitive to gluten, am a diagnosed Celiac and wine has never made me sick. Some people are sensitive to sulfites... -
ARCHIVED Aga And Dgp Differences?
Gemini replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is covered in Dr. Peter Green's new book. The DGP is a newer version of the AGA test and, supposedly, a more sensitive test. I don't have the book with me so cannot provide a direct quote but that's essentially it. The AGA is still a good test but the DGP is better and may replace the AGA. The AGA test looks for the gliadin protein in your blood,... -
This is the major reason I never eat at cheaper places, unless they have the GIG sign of approval sticker on the entry door! Places like the 99 are no better than McDonald's with regards to the education level of their staff and servers. If smaller restaurants do not have the room for a dedicated fryer, then french fries shouldn't be on the menu there, period...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed-Not Happy
Gemini replied to Sher1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is the horror show that many Celiacs go through and I honestly feel the lifestyle is a piece of gluten-free cake compared to the years of illness I also suffered. There may be a learning curve for those who do not cook much and know little of the content of the food they eat every day but it's nothing compared to almost dying. I also have been able to... -
ARCHIVED Laser Treatment For Allergies
Gemini replied to Peace41's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am not sure where you are getting all of your information from, but I would double check and think hard before committing your time and money to things such as laser therapy for allergies. I know lasers can be used for skin conditions like acne and for reducing the appearance of wrinkles (red and blue laser therapy) but I have never heard of any being... -
ARCHIVED Does Emotional Stress Make You Worse?
Gemini replied to Saz36's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Absolutely! Stress has a direct affect on the immune system and can make problems you are having a lot worse. I stressed myself into a case of shingles last year and it was not fun. I know it's hard to chill out when things pile up but try to have some fun when you are getting all stressed out so you can relax a bit. I am so sorry it was a bereavement which... -
ARCHIVED Vision Problems And Celiac/Sensitivity
Gemini replied to deme12's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are noticing a worsening of your vision, it could be age related or if you are not in that group, you may have another autoimmune problem going on at the same time. Sjogren's Syndrome is one example, plus diabetes can alter vision for the worse. If you have multiple problems, the gluten-free diet may or may not help with this. It really could be many... -
ARCHIVED Dunkin Donuts
Gemini replied to dube's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The vast majority of coffee that is unflavored, is gluten-free. The flavored versions may or may not be so you would have to check with the manufacturer. I do not drink DD coffee...I'm a Starbuck's addict. However, I would be extremely careful when ordering in a DD shop and ask the server to change their gloves before getting your coffee. The CC in there...
