  1. Adhesives 101 (updated): Adhesives found on fruit, on envelopes and stamps are perfectly safe. This is another subject that people become confused on. It's understandable if you are newly diagnosed but an area that should be learned because it saves a lot of trouble and anxiety. With fruit all you have to do is peel off the sticker and wash the fruit...
  2. You mean I could get a sandwich in the UK at Starbuck's and all I can get here in the US are some Kind bars or cookies that are just OK? I am so mad that Starbuck's got rid of the orange almond cake....that was really good. I also think that Americans tendency to complain and sue may be at the root cause of the problem here. In the UK, if you sue someone...
  3. Actually, agave syrup is an excellent alternative to sugar as it does not spike blood sugar levels....it's VERY low glycemic. It is most definitely not worse than high fructose corn syrup and you can't even compare the two. It's also loaded with iron, calcium and potassium. I think you need to check your sources on where the agave is manufactured and like...
  4. Good luck, Connie, and I'm sure you'll be able to get to the bottom of this. It doesn't sound gluten related at all and more like a blood sugar problem. I had those big time when undiagnosed and then after, until I healed a bit. Keep us posted on your progress and feel better soon!
  5. Hello Liz, and welcome to our club! Do you have a link to your blog? I am coming to the UK this Fall and would like to take a look at your reviews. Thanks!
  6. Maybe it's the quality of chicken and pork that I buy but I have never seen any chicken or pork, unless marinated or breaded, which contains a gluten component. Processed meats may be suspect and have to be checked but fresh kill pork or chicken will not. You do have to double check meds but again, most today are being formulated gluten-free. I do not...
  7. I am also as sensitive as they come but do very well in the real world. You have to ingest gluten for it to start the whole chain of events which lead up to symptoms and damage. What this doctor is describing sounds more like an allergy to me and it's entirely possible for a Celiac to also have a wheat allergy. If being compliant involves a younger child...
  8. I live in Boston, Massachusetts and we have incredible gluten-free options here. Lots of restaurants do gluten-free menu's and most of the large chain grocery stores have gluten-free sections now. This will be my 8th trip to London and that's one of the major reasons I come back.....aside from the fact I love that city! I have never had any problems...
  9. This is definitely the best advice and the most normal way to go about a resolution. I couldn't agree more. I have yet to go to any "special" restaurant, which sounds like it would be a higher end place, that could not accommodate a gluten-free diet successfully. Even an Italian restaurant can make a steak or chicken dish, with a potato, that could be safety...
  10. Modified food starch is safe in the US. It is derived from corn and if there was wheat involved, it would have to be labeled as such on the package. It would read something like....modified food starch (wheat). Natural flavoring is also the same. I have yet to find any natural flavorings that were not gluten-free. Most reliable sources of information on...
  11. That is a misconception that Celiac Disease carries a higher risk factor for hundreds of other conditions/diseases. The latest version of Dr. Peter Green's book goes into all that and he states that the vast majority of malignancies occur prior to a diagnosis of Celiac. For those of us who are lucky to have a diagnosis and follow a strict gluten-free diet...
  12. The UK provides a "prescription" for gluten-free foods, which are made for Celiacs in a gluten-free baking house. From what I have seen and heard, the food is horrible. You'd be better off buying or making your own gluten-free breads and treats at home. Many socialist countries have either a reimbursement system or gluten-free food obtained through a prescription...
  13. Hello San! It must be very difficult to have Celiac without any gastric symptoms. You are correct, how do you know when you have been glutened? As you are not in the US, you probably eat a better diet than many here without Celiac eat so you will probably do just fine. It also helps being married to a good cook! For many who know they triggered...
  14. If the only time you have an outbreak of hives is after drinking wine, then I would strongly suspect the sulfites as the culprit. You are having more of an allergic response, not an intolerance type reaction. Positive IgE is an allergic response and the kind of reaction that's measured in allergy testing. Wine is gluten free and will not cause a wheat...
  15. Are you drinking it, Jason? If you have an allergy to wheat in topical products, then it may cause enough irritation to cause a small amount of hair loss. If you have Celiac and still eat gluten, then you could develop an autoimmune problem, like alopecia, which causes massive hair loss, to the point where many sufferers end up wearing a wig. ...
  16. Connie....I hate to say this but it sounds like you aren't eating well to begin with so maybe that might explain your dizziness. A bowl of cereal with lots of dairy for dinner? As I call it, cardboard and dairy...yum! You drank 2 cups of coffee this morning.....did you have anything to eat with it? You need to eat healthy meals and definitely eat something...
  17. I also had problems with the time release capsules...they worked horribly for me. I have pretty fast motility in my gut, along with Celiac, and when I tried the time release thyroid meds last year, my TSH shot up to 31. Rule of thumb for me is TSH suppressed and keep T3/T4 in the upper range of normal. I also agree with your philosophy about T3 being more...
  18. The problem with controlling thyroid through diet (not many people can accomplish this....thyroid problems have to be pretty mild) is that the goitrogenic foods are the ones that are really good for you. Brussel sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower, to name a few. No way am I going to give up these veggies and I eat them everyday. I also consume soy, not in...
  19. Lundberg is a very gluten-free friendly company and markets directly to Celiacs. They make a line of pre-packaged risotto mixes, with sauces, that are gluten-free and delicious. The ones which are gluten-free are clearly marked, on the front of the box in big letters....can't miss it. I have never felt remotely suspicious that they were contaminated after...
  20. I do not demand that my husband go gluten-free either and it works beautifully for us. We do not have kids so maybe that adds to the easiness factor. I think for some it may be a combination of adjustment and fear.....there is a lot of that out there! Many people think they will become sick if they are even around gluten and sometimes there isn't anything...
  21. If Ttg levels have not normalized after 2 years, then you should look at the possibility that there is another autoimmune disease going on...which is perfectly normal for someone with Celiac. I have 4 autoimmune diseases total so it took a long time for them to quiet down on the gluten free diet. Yes, other issues may well improve once you have been on the...
  22. A few pieces of information for all of you who are way too hard on yourselves..... According to the vast majority of Celiac specialists and researchers who have published books and articles on the subject, it can take up to 2 years for blood work to normalize and be in the happy range. Just because it is taking a long time for some in no way means you...
  23. Taking into account that I do not know how young your children are, and speaking from my own experience, it is not always necessary to go and sit elsewhere to eat safely. I was near death (honestly) when diagnosed and become extremely ill when I accidentally ingest any amount of gluten...I only say this so you'll know how seriously I take the effort to not...
  24. I am not totally insensitive to the fact that having young kids poses challenges when living gluten-free. It certainly does. However, I come from a different time, I am 51 and was raised by the greatest generation set. Back in the day, we had challenges also and they were probably harder to deal with because it was very unusual to see a diabetic child or...
