ARCHIVED Osteopenia
Gemini replied to twe0708's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have osteopenia and my spinal measurement was inching towards osteoporosis when I had a bone scan about 3 years ago. I have physicals every 3 years so have no clue how things are going until my next visit in February. To be honest, I take a boatload of calcium using supplements which can only be obtained through a physician. It is not a Rx but one of the... -
ARCHIVED It's Just A Marketing Fad, Just Like Atkins!?
Gemini replied to wantsomedammpizza's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Then you have indeed been supremely lucky because the VAST majority of Celiacs get exactly this type of crappola, most notably from family members. They behave like this for a number of reasons easily understood but still difficult to endure. My mother, older sister and brother have all treated me badly, including purposefully contaminating my food so I can... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Free Products Like Shampoo, Makeup
Gemini replied to willabec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It all depends on how careful you are with regards to ingestion of anything when you use these products. I do not screen for any topically used products except, of course, lip stuff. Have had great success with it for the past 4 1/2 years. Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin and will not cause a problem unless you ingest it or have another allergy... -
I don't see why not, if the particular coffee is gluten-free. Unless your co-workers are slobs or careless and have lots of gluteny food piled around the coffee pot, I say go ahead and enjoy!

ARCHIVED Got My Diagnosis!
Gemini replied to Laurelf's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's one of the great mysteries of the modern world......why this disease will not be officially diagnosed until you have gone through enough testing to fill a month of Sundays! If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, guess what it is? Not that I am dissing NP's BUT you have had 2 DOCTORS agree on your results and that's rare enough these days. It... -
ARCHIVED Starting To Worry About Having Kids Now
Gemini replied to soulcurrent's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I opted to not have children but I think it was because, deep down, I knew there was a problem with me and I had to concentrate on finding out what it was instead of focusing on having kids. I ended up so sick, I seriously doubt I would have been able to carry to term. By the time I was diagnosed, I had gone through menopause so the decision was made for... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant Dh Thinking Of Going Back To Gluten
Gemini replied to halfrunner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As others have already stated, I guess we would be better off going to the vets for our health care! That last post from So Tired of Doctors was priceless! Well....the news is good! I had a long talk with hubby and told him he has pushed me as far as I can go so if he does not consent to some blood work for his thyroid and Celiac, I would think seriously... -
This is to all those who are biopsy diagnosed......have any of you had gene testing also and what was the outcome? I am specifically looking to see if there are any out there with DQ1 results, along with a positive scope. Thank you!

Casein is the protein in milk and lactose is the sugar. Celiacs/GS people can have a problem with either one or both. If you cut out dairy by itself, you will find out soon enough if dairy, in general, is causing your symptoms. It's important to cut out only one food group at a time so you can nail down what the problem is, if there is one. I'm sure...

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant Dh Thinking Of Going Back To Gluten
Gemini replied to halfrunner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My marriage is absolutely a partnership in every way......except the very few bad habits my hubby learned from HIS father. That is what I am fighting here. I can't even tell you how controlling his father was to his mother. She was very subservient to him and that's how their very old fashioned marriage worked. Not for me, as I have reminded him enough times... -
It sounds like you have another intolerance, like dairy maybe, which is very common in newly diagnosed Celiacs. People often make the mistake that they must be ingesting gluten if their symptoms continue. It isn't that hard to banish gluten from a kitchen area, unless you have kids, so if you are fairly confident that you have cleaned the kitchen well, it...

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant Dh Thinking Of Going Back To Gluten
Gemini replied to halfrunner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think you are correct and that's a shame because some people never get to that point, which others do, of feeling so bad that they see the connection and want to get better. It's when you lose quality of life, I think. I know when I hit the point where I couldn't leave the house and go to work, it really dawned on me that it was the wheat that was killing... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant Dh Thinking Of Going Back To Gluten
Gemini replied to halfrunner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think maybe your husband and mine are twins! I am about 60% sure my husband is either a Celiac or he is GS. I did his gene testing after I did mine for Celiac and he is a double DQ1....which is definitely GS and maybe Celiac related. He has always been thin and at 50 years old, eats like teen-age football player and never gains weight. He has yet... -
ARCHIVED Quinoa Flakes My Body Did Not Like Them!
Gemini replied to homemaker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was not attacking you personally...in fact, my response was not directed to you at all but the original poster. As a super sensitive Celiac, I wanted to point out that reactions are not all gluten based. Seeing as everyone likes to post to what degree their sensitivity is in relation to reactions, I posted mine. What you got from the company was their standard... -
ARCHIVED Quinoa Flakes My Body Did Not Like Them!
Gemini replied to homemaker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat those quinoa flakes and use them in cooking and have had zero problems. I am as ultra sensitive as a Celiac can be and would have gotten sick if they contained any gluten or were CC'd. They are very high in fiber and many people have a problem with the fiber content if you are not used to eating much of that. It may not be a reaction from gluten at... -
ARCHIVED Swollen, Throbbing, Aching Finger A Symptom?
Gemini replied to ratty89's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hate to say this but you may want to be screened for Rheumatoid arthritis, which is one of the most common associated problems with Celiac. You may be triggering for that. Swollen, achy joints are the number one symptom of the disease and it can start with just one joint and progress. I hope not but you should keep that in mind if the problem does not go... -
ARCHIVED Can Shingles Be A Symptom Of Celiac Disease?
Gemini replied to blueeyedvegan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you find that you do not have a topical wheat allergy, you could conceivably use any lotion you want on your skin. I do and have had no issues. As any internal ingestion will cause my blood levels to rise, I did some experiments in the first couple of years to make sure what I read was actually true. Using any product on my skin, as long as I was careful... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Take Accutane?
Gemini replied to collins146's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Doctors ought to be shot for offering Accutane....it's a drug with side effects so severe, it should not be on the market. It can also cause birth defects and this has been reported from MEN who have taken it and then conceived children later on. It doesn't necessarily have to be the woman who has taken it. Your post set off warning bells and I'll tell... -
Progesterone is the first hormone to drop when menopause is starting. When this happens, you can become estrogen dominant. Completely normal and way overblown by mainstream medicine. This is the point where menopausal symptoms can begin so supplementing with progesterone, preferably bio-identicals and not the pharmaceutical kind, will help to balance out...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Wear A Medical Bracelet?
Gemini replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Having a heart attack, no matter how mild or severe, trumps eating gluten-free every time. That is emergency medicine so whatever aspirin someone offers you, you should absolutely take it. You will never die from a single small gluten hit but you could die from a heart attack so it's a no brainer....at least from my perspective. -
ARCHIVED So Upset, Need Help With Vertigo
Gemini replied to cbear6301's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gluten intolerance IS Celiac disease and it doesn't make any difference if you are a biopsy diagnosed Celiac or a self diagnosed gluten sensitive person...you cannot have gluten. The medical community does not recognize gluten sensitivity, only Celiac disease, so we won't know for many years to come whether villi damage occurs in GS patients as well. Studies... -
ARCHIVED Can Shingles Be A Symptom Of Celiac Disease?
Gemini replied to blueeyedvegan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Gluten cannot be absorbed through your skin. The molecule is too large. You would have to be ingesting it through your mouth, nose or eyes, in large enough amounts, to spark an autoimmune reaction. Many people also have a topical wheat allergy, which is an entirely different animal than a Celiac reaction. If you are reacting on your skin, it's either a topical... -
Carrabba's does a fabulous job of serving gluten-free food even though they do not have a dedicated grill. You do not need to have one if you cook the food in a clean pan or clean the grill well....which they must do or I would react. I am also a super sensitive Celiac and the smallest amounts I would feel. You do not have to have separate cooking area's...

Jen........I think it foolish of your doctor to treat you for an ulcer if he hasn't done any testing for one! Ulcer's are usually treated with antibiotics as they are caused by bacteria and it takes a high dosage to get rid of those. However, here are my thoughts..... First off, and I have said this many, many times on this forum, you do not check...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Wear A Medical Bracelet?
Gemini replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was not aware I had to be so specific but it would make sense that whatever country you live in, you'll have to do your own investigating. Here in the US and Canada, there are many meds, both name brand and generic, which are gluten free. It is easy enough to verify by calling the company. I do not take many meds at all but the ones I do are compounded...
