  1. If you are unconscious in a hospital, you would not be given any meds by mouth....everything would be given by IV and I have yet to ever hear of any IV fluid containing gluten. Binding agents are not generally used in meds given by IV, whether into a vein or not. You absolutely cannot be glutened by anything that doesn't go into your gut so there should be...
  2. Your doctor is not running the correct test to see if you are ingesting gluten. The tTg IgA tests for intestinal damage and other autoimmune problems can also make this elevate. This is why it is run in conjunction with the other tests in the panel. What he needs to run is the AGA IgA test, which is the anti-gliadin measurement of whether you are making antibodies...
  3. Oh...I wasn't mad or anything, JoAnn! I do feel the diet should come first as a treatment plan but sometimes, meds are needed. I feel really bad because in some ways, I do know what you are going through. With a high ANA and RF factor myself, I have been avoiding a trip to the Rheumy. It's weird, I have no symptoms of lupus or rheumatoid arthritis at all...
  4. ANA testing is a test for general inflammation in the body. It can mean any number of things which may cause inflammation. Not a specific test at all. I have a very high ANA, along with 4 autoimmune diseases, so it would be expected. I am doing well and don't worry about it. It would be highly recommended for the doctor to do a FULL Celiac panel on you...
  5. I go to an alternative internist for my thyroid and to obtain bio-identical hormones for menopausal symptoms. She is as much of an MD as any physician in the HMO system but also chooses to think outside of the box which traditional medicine is trapped in. She uses both Eastern and Western medicine techniques, depending upon the problem you have. I have...
  6. This does not sound like shingles at all and I would suspect another problem. Shingles takes about 4-8 weeks to go away, on average, depending upon the severity of the case. If the rash is going away faster than you can have a doctor look at and diagnose it as such, then it isn't shingles. You also would not be able to run hot water over a shingles rash...
  7. I am sorry you have had such a hard time with everything and can empathize with you because I have 4 autoimmune diseases and the reality is lurking in the background that I could have more. I am not in a wheelchair so I would imagine that you have had a harder time than the vast majority of Celiacs. Your case is certainly atypical. Most do better on the gluten...
  8. It's nice to know that I am not the only person here with this issue and a mother who acts this way. I know she probably loves me but certainly has a weird way of showing it!
  9. I may not be the right person to ask about alcoholism and addiction as I have a different take on it entirely than many do. My father is an alcoholic who really doesn't drink that much anymore because his health is so poor and he is on a million meds. I firmly believe he also has Celiac Disease to boot. He is symptomatic in a big way and carries a DQ2 gene...
  10. Your post cracked me up and I needed a good laugh! I could probably name a number of places where the attire nazi's could have a field day. I have traveled to Europe a number of times and you can always tell an American by sight...all by the way they dress, or don't dress, for that matter! Pretty sad and I hope it changes back a bit to when people had...
  11. Elevated protein levels are common in autoimmune disease. Mine was elevated for years before my diagnosis and it took about 3 years for it to come back down into the normal range after starting the gluten free diet. I am sure yours will come back down also, if you follow a strict gluten-free diet. It can also mean a chance of some blood cancers BUT please...
  12. The way that you cook fried green tomatoes, in the correct Southern way, is to fry them in lard......good, old fashioned lard! It's the way it's done in the South and I've been told by people in the know that they don't taste right unless you fry them in lard. You can buy it at the grocery store. I decided to try it and just sliced them up and fried them...
  13. If your villi and small intestine are inflamed and you have a positive blood test for Celiac, you still may have it so don't totally believe what this doctor is telling you. You have to understand that if they don't find atrophy, they will tell you you do not have Celiac.....that is the only protocol they use, period. You may be in the early stages of Celiac...
  14. Well said and I couldn't agree more. There is a cure for Celiac Disease....healthy, gluten-free eatin'!
  15. To play devil's advocate here for a moment.....Near east is a brand I used regularly before I was diagnosed. Since then, they no longer are bought in my household for the reason that they do not advertise themselves as being gluten free and I think they are under no obligation to mark their boxes as such or warn against cc. I already knew some of their products...
  16. The reason your doc MAY have targeted a TSH in the 0.5-2.0 range is to bring your antibody levels down. That's not quite suppressed but the usual course of treatment for high antibody levels is to suppress your TSH so it won't be calling out for more thyroid hormone and making your thyroid work harder. That's exactly how mine was treated only my TSH was brought...
  17. The FDA controls prescription meds and Armour is a Rx med. Doesn't matter what happened many years ago with grandfathering it in, they control it now. You cannot make a change to any formula like this without FDA approval. I don't necessarily agree with the FDA on many issues and this was one of them. Thyroid hormone is pretty serious medication and over...
  18. Insulin is an entirely different animal than thyroid hormone so comparing the two is apples and oranges. Thyroid labs are not worthless and should be used in conjunction with symptoms. To disregard labs and dose on your own is dangerous but good luck with that. I'm sure you are smarter than your doctor.
  19. Here's how I understand the whole picture, as I've learned from all the reading I have done and what doctor visits have taught me.....I have Celiac, Hashi's thyroid, Sjogrens Syndrome and Reynauds Syndrome. Hashi's thyroid and a few other autoimmune diseases, like autoimmune liver disease, will raise tTg levels also, along with Celiac. This is why other specific...
  20. Thank you for clarifying this, nora! I know quite a bit about thyroid meds as I have had the problem for about 15 years and have tried a number of meds for it. No medication would have such high amounts of T3/T4 in them and I know what the dosing is on Armour. BTW, my thyroid doc queried the makers of Armour about the unavailability of the hormone right...
  21. Thank you very much for posting this! I live close to Worcester and am a fan of Boynton's. I had heard of Wild Willies but haven't eaten there yet. However, now that I know they are working on gluten-free onion rings, I will make a point of checking them out!
  22. Don't sweat trying gluten-free oats....most companies go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure their oats are gluten-free. They are batch tested to ensure against cc. Most people who cannot tolerate them most often just have a problem with that much fiber but if you were used to eating a lot of fiber in your diet pre-diagnosis, you shouldn't have a...
  23. You know, it's the same with the airlines! My big complaint today is the way Americans look.....especially when they fly. I am old enough to remember when people dressed for flying on planes and today many look like they just rolled out of bed. When my husband and I fly, we dress up an are treated much, much better than anyone else not dressed well. It does...
  24. Now this is scary! For a woman who has given birth twice, au naturale, and says the colonoscopy prep is worse than that, I have to have the utmost respect for! I admire your courage and know you will be OK, after all is said and done. I have not had a colonoscopy because I am having no problems which would warrant having one done but have heard many...
  25. Which specific blood test is showing raised antibodies? Do not assume you are being glutened or cc'd because of elevated antibodies......it depends on which ones are elevated. Other autoimmune diseases may cause an elevated tTg also and if a person has multiple diseases, your antibodies may not come down into the normal range. Is it the tTg or the anti-gliadin...
