ARCHIVED Employment Issues, Celiacs And The Ada, Any Ideas
Gemini replied to Smiling-Eyes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know, it's people like this who make it difficult for the rest of us who don't go around with the mindset that we are disabled and need special treatment! Finally Diagnosed and emcmaster have the right idea and I agree with them completely. We live in an entitle-ist world these days and everyone wants attention. However, I am offended that anyone would... -
OK, now it's time to play devils advocate here and give another side to this issue. Inhaling flour is very different than thinking you may have swallowed some shampoo during a shower. I have a friend who is Celiac and is a supervisor at a cafeteria and was the master baker there. His numbers (which is what everyone needs to refer back to when starting to...

I know how you feel....I have Hashimoto's, Sjogren's, Reynaud's Syndrome......BUT, it could be worse! The eye problems are my worst issue because you just don't realize how important moist eyeballs are until you lose them. I know how tempting it is to LASIX them if your eyesight is really bad. My sister was legally blind (without her glasses) before LASIX...

I have both Celiac and Sjogren's Syndrome and from what you have described, I would guess you have Sjogren's also. It's not the same as dry eyes due to aging (which wouldn't be your problem at 32) but dry to the point of painful. I am also using Restasis and it works very well so that should help you. Another big help is using an eye gel at night when you...

ARCHIVED Toilet Paper And Paper Towels
Gemini replied to confused's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm glad someone else has taken the time to research what will actually cause a gluten reaction! Good post, Brenda, and you are 100% correct about DH being an internally caused reaction. If someone is having a problem with paper towels and TP, then they most likely would also have a topical allergy to something in the product. It's an autoimmune response... -
ARCHIVED Avoiding Gluten Seems To Be Working...
Gemini replied to coldnight's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I do not use any mainstream produced food products so am not too familiar with La Choy products. I would not believe everything you hear on the net either. It may be gluten-free but I do not know. I use San J Tamari, which is basically soy sauce, and I buy it at Whole Foods Market. There are different kinds but there is one clearly labeled wheat free and... -
ARCHIVED Avoiding Gluten Seems To Be Working...
Gemini replied to coldnight's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From what you have described, it certainly could mean you have Celiac or gluten sensitivity. Many people do an elimination diet to find some answers after being told they have IBS. I personally do think IBS is just a label they have given to a bunch of symptoms that are actually indicative of a bigger problem like intolerances or allergies. Testing costs... -
ARCHIVED Alvine Pharmaceuticals Reports Positive Results
Gemini replied to patriceo15's topic in Publications & Publicity
As much as I think this or any drug would be useful for travellers who want to protect themselves against CC in a foreign country, this statement makes me cringe. I have wonderful quality of life, as far as food goes and certainly do not need any pharmaceutical therapies, i.e. DRUGS, to make my life better on a daily basis. We have become such a pill... -
It is very easy to be gluten-free in the UK as they are a nation who are aware. However, they have different standards than we do and they allow wheat starch in their baked goods. That is not allowed in the US and many people have gotten sick from the wheat starch so I always avoid carbs when in Britain. Their allowed number is up to 200 ppm and here in the...

You mentioned you are in Chile.....are you at altitude? If you are, that might explain your thirst. If at altitude, you will end up drinking a ton more water than if you are at sea level, especially if you exercise at altitude. Dehydration will give you dark urine and it's very easy to become dehydrated when at higher elevations. Avoid alcohol and caffeine...

ARCHIVED Frustrated By My Sisters
Gemini replied to Treen Bean's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know exactly how you feel because I have 2 sisters myself who are strong possible Celiacs/GS also. My younger sister sort of gets it and has tried following the gluten-free diet because her teen daughter definitely has a problem with gluten. Her daughter is better at it than my sister and she's only 14! The problem my sister has is she is basically a lazy... -
ARCHIVED Tournament Dinner - What Should I Do?
Gemini replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ellie...it sounds like you have done a marvelous job handling social situations that revolve around food and I commend you for doing what I try to do.....when I do bring my own food, I always make sure to have something better than what the gluten eaters have so they get a different perspective of the gluten-free diet. The only comment you made that made... -
ARCHIVED Score Of 63
Gemini replied to formerglutenglutton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are Celiac and go on the gluten-free diet, you will start to absorb nutrients again and will gain weight. I never, ever got above 105 lbs and I am 5' 4". That was eating about 3-4,000 calories per day too. Once I went gluten-free, within a year and a half I was at my present weight of 112 pounds. I now have to watch my intake, like everyone else, but... -
ARCHIVED Tournament Dinner - What Should I Do?
Gemini replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What an excellent attitude! I agree, I just don't give a hoot what ANYONE thinks either and it's really the way to go. The funniest part of having celiac disease is that it bothers most people WAY more if you sit there and don't eat anything as opposed to it bothering me. I had a birthday dinner this past week-end and I couldn't have any of the appetizers... -
I also use Gifts of Nature and think they are awesome. I am an avid oatmeal eater and needed to find something good because I would not give them up. Try making them with a 50/50 mixture of water and milk and they can't be beat! Creamy in texture without being mushy. Great hiking food....they keep you full and energized. As for McCann's oatmeal, that was...

ARCHIVED Low White Blood Count (wbc)
Gemini replied to Eileen13's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Eileen....I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially if you are feeling well and have no symptoms of anything. I have always had a low white cell count (which I realize is different from what you have experienced) and it is not unusual for a person with immune issues. There are certain components of your blood that will show immunity based problems but... -
ARCHIVED New Meds: Thyroid, Progesterone, Dhea
Gemini replied to Jenny (AZ via TX)'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry about the last post......accidentally hit the wrong button! For what it's worth......I always take my Levoxyl at 6:00 in the morning, when I get up for work. When I have repeat testing, it's always after 4:00 in the afternoon and this is perfectly fine, according to my doc. I think it's only an issue if you are having blood drawn within 6 hours... -

ARCHIVED You Never Know What All Has Wheat!
Gemini replied to kim:)'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
sbj......Technically speaking, you do not have to use gluten-free shampoo's/skin care products unless you feel there is no way you can wash your hair without ingesting some into your GI tract. In order to aggravate your immune system and spark a response, you absolutely have to ingest some into your gut. Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin as the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Upcoming Oral Surgery For Cyst In Jaw
Gemini replied to sansglutengrl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There are just some people that certain anesthetics do not work well on. However, there are other oral numbing agents that work extremely well and you won't feel a thing. I have had oral surgery and a few root canals and the endodontist used something that she wouldn't tell me the name of. It was a VERY powerful anesthetic and I never felt a thing and it... -
ARCHIVED Potentially Traveling To Salem, Mass. In October. Any Suggestions?
Gemini replied to Miss Posh's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Well....congratulations, young lady!!!! May you have many happy, gluten free years together! If you do come to Salem eventually, make sure to come in October because the foliage is awesome and looks especially beautiful being on the ocean. It really is a fun city to visit! -
Chocolate does influence seratonin levels...absolutely. My sister was put on an antidepressant (a seratonin re-uptake) and right on the label that gives all the pharmaceutical information it stated that chocolate should be eaten in much smaller doses and to watch how much is consumed because it will interfere with the meds. I would have ditched the meds...

ARCHIVED Lets Talk About Coffee Filter Please!
Gemini replied to DebNC84's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Deb......take a deep breath for a moment. Gluten is a protein and it's food. I cannot imagine there being a protein in a coffee filter. Why do people question a coffee filter? No one would even be doing testing on a coffee filter to see if there was any gluten in it because it's not food. People also need to get off the PPM thing. That would only be pertinent... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease On Medical Alert Bracelet
Gemini replied to simplicity66's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sounds like you may have had food poisoning because a glutening would not cause such a violent reaction. Yup, I can hear the nay sayers now but I was at end stage and very sick at the time of diagnosis and I remember one thing the doctor told me. With Celiac Disease, you may have vomiting along with the Big D but the vomiting is not the same as food poisoning... -
ARCHIVED New Meds: Thyroid, Progesterone, Dhea
Gemini replied to Jenny (AZ via TX)'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Jenny....she has you on too high of a dose of T3! You are almost identical to me with regards to your meds. I also have never heard of giving thyroid meds twice a day, at those doses. I am on Levoxyl 150 mcg and was taking a compounded T3, at 2mcg. After being gluten-free for 3 years, I began to experience symptoms of hyperthyroid so I have dropped the T...
