  1. You would be correct......the processed turkeys like Butterball are injected with a solution to re-hydrate the turkey and it contains a gluten component. I buy a wild turkey and that's safe to eat. I make my own stuffing out of a mixture of gluten-free corn bread and 2 other types of gluten-free bread to give it really great flavor and texture. Do not...
  2. I know I was not the one that heard what this doctor said in detail but maybe she just didn't go into detail about the diet as a whole and some of the lifestyle changes that have to occur because of time constraints? Her overall attitude about not making a big deal about this is basically a good one and perhaps her intention is to make sure her daughter deals...
  3. I subscribe and it's an excellent magazine. Many recipes and resources for gluten-free foods and products are included. I didn't find it a negative title at all....you are only living without wheat, barley and rye yet they show you all the foods and flours you can live with. We have many more choices we can make available to us for use instead of just wheat...

    ARCHIVED Burger King?

All fast food restaurants should really be avoided because of cross contamination. They hire teenagers and others who probably wouldn't know anything about celiac disease or how to not cross contaminate. I just find the whole idea too risky.

    ARCHIVED My Toes Cramp

There is no normal path with Celiac disease and that's why doctors do so badly with diagnosing it. They don't really listen to what their patients are telling them or do not believe it could cause such varied symptoms, so tell people they are either crazy or just that they don't know. celiac disease affects your central nervous system so that explains all...

    ARCHIVED My Toes Cramp

I had the same problem and it most likely is caused by vitamin deficiencies, most notably magnesium. Lack of it will cause muscle cramping. Take a good magnesium supplement and, with healing and time, it will go away. Mine did.

Wow....talk about blowing a post way out of proportion! I'm thinking there's a chip somwhere on your shoulder because you seem to have a problem with people who adapt well to difficult situations. I've gotten that before and it generally comes from those who wallow in self pity. Yup, I do look on the bright side of things and will not apologize for that...

No one is unduly criticizing anyone and you should have enough sense to see that. I can honestly see why so many people get stuck and have a really hard time with this lifestyle, from the reaction of some here. I am not comparing my life to theirs either....everyone on this forum comes forth with their story but it would seem only certain ones are popular...
  9. Mario.....I wouldn't sweat a few cigarettes a week and that info came from a doctor. Smoking propaganda has reached such ridiculous heights and people often fall for it. I am in no way saying it's healthy but the majority of smokers are pack a day or more and that is definitely not good at all. If that's all you are honestly doing, don't worry about it.....
  10. I often wonder why anyone with diagnosed Celiacs in their blood family would doubt what their bodies are telling them when they have symptoms? Not trying to be a pain here but if you know in your gut that it's gluten that's giving you a problem AND your blood relatives are diagnosed Celiacs, the odds of your having it also is sky high. If you fail to recover...

    ARCHIVED My Rant

Yes, that would be me. I went 20 years with active symptoms, almost every one listed for celiac and then some, before it was all figured out. In the course of those 20 years of eating poison, I acquired 2 other autoimmune diseases that give me grief from time to time. So I am one of the more severe cases and could be crying in my gluten-free beer but am not...

That's all well and good but regardless of what anyone says, you don't want to get stuck in a pity party. Many people get stuck and should not feel guilty about it...they should take action. Or if they find it too difficult, ask for help because it sure will make for a long and miserable life if a person has trouble letting go of foods they can no longer...

    ARCHIVED My Rant

I am in no way intending to sound as if people don't have a right to grieve. If that's what a person has to experience to get to the other side of Celiac and not have any issues with it, that's totally OK with me. However, I have also seen people get stuck in the grieving process way too long or never seem to be able to detach themselves from the food issue...

You do have some awesome and well spoken points, Jody, but I have to slightly disagree with you about the whole idea that having celiac disease sucks. I know many people have this mindset but I don't view it that way at all. I eat better than all the people in my orbit, still have found many restaurants where I can dine without fear of being glutened, although...
  15. Yes, you may very well have low thyroid without flaming symptoms but I would also add that your age is definitely a factor. Whether or not you are menopausal, your metabolism slows down some with each passing decade and sometimes it hits all at once. I also think people are somewhat surprised at how little you get to eat once you get older and you also have...
  16. This thread has been a hoot and I couldn't agree with you all more, regarding the medical professions ignorance and denial regarding Celiac Disease. Recently, I had some bloodwork done and some of the results came back a bit wonky. I have had the same results before, over the years, and just figured it was attributed to having celiac disease. I even...
  17. I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you but I was not diagnosed by a GI. I figured it out on my own, after going almost 20 years to doctors and getting nowhere. I then requested testing from my physician, via blood work, and it turned out so high, an endoscopy was not needed. I did try to make an appointment with a GI, initially, but they are very busy...
  18. Carol.....Many labs and doctors today routinely do not do the proper blood tests for celiac disease and that is not fair to the suffering patient. It's all about money. I am still confused as to why 2 blood draws would be done because a good celiac disease panel automatically includes the deficiency test anyway. I used Genova Labs and they are one of the...
  19. I figured that was a no brainer, so didn't go into IGA deficient people. On a proper Celiac panel, as I stated before, the total IGA should be included or the other tests aren't worth doing. If you have sufficient IGA, eating gluten would make your numbers go up.....depending upon at what stage of the disease you are in.
  20. Jenny.....couldn't agree with you more! I highly doubt a pill will ever come about for celiac disease because it would have to stop the autoimmune reaction and doctor's just haven't even come close to conquering that monster. Look at the treatment and vaccines for AIDS....they have made strides but the bottom line is the immune system can adapt to meds they...
  21. A proper Celiac panel of tests will include a total IGA test, so you do not have to have it done beforehand. If a doctor does not run this, then you have a doctor who does not know how to diagnose Celiac. Eating gluten, if you have celiac disease, will definitely NOT lower your IGA....it will raise it. Depending on what stage of the disease you are in...
  22. Hi Pam, A person with DH would absolutely have to be careful of anything in products used on the skin. They react through skin contact. However, and I am sure some will not agree but I've done the research and it's medical fact, you cannot become glutened breathing something in, unless you swallow some and it reaches your intestinal tract. This is...
  23. Thanks so much for posting this! I was wondering about Capital Grill and whether they were gluten-free friendly. There is also one in Burlington, next to the new L.L. Bean's. Massachusetts may have it's drawbacks but it is becoming a very gluten-free friendly state!
  24. Thanks so much for these 2 great options! I know where you mean regarding Harvard and it will take about 15 minutes from my house.....I live about 2 miles from Rt. 495. I was never a big sandwich eater before because they caused me to bloat but now that I am gluten-free, it will be a pleasure to order a sandwich! There is another Celiac in my group here...
