  1. My youngest was 10 months old at diagnosis. She started dropping on the growth chart at about 4 months. Her doc tracked her weight carefully for awhile to see if it was just a normal dip since she didn't really have any other symptoms. At 9 months, he ordered blood work. When that came back negative we had already started the diet and saw improvements...
  2. My youngest was diagnosed for failure to thrive. After learning about the disease and reading more symptoms, we put our older 2 the diet as well. Neither had ever had stomach trouble, but we have had behavioral issues for years. A child psychologist was no help-he found nothing "wrong" with her and said they are just high-energy kids so put them in lots...
  3. I'm not saying this is necessarily true for your daughter because no one but her can know how she feels, but it is possible the middle of the night "my tummy hurts" has just become a habit. I know I have kids who are expert stallers and would give anything for an excuse to get out of bed. The tummy ache is a favorite, though I always try to eliminate sources...
  4. I had heard once that you should screen 1st degree relatives of a celiac (sibs, parents, children) every 2-3 years. OTOH, you might find that a gluten free household is easier than half and half. It is especially difficult on a child of that age to be left out of certain things that your 6-year-old can have. Also, they don't yet understand what is and...
  5. Since she is a thumb sucker I would bet a good amount of money the gluten accidents are coming from cross contamination. She touches something (play-doh, maybe or another child's food-even if she doesn't eat it) and then sucks it right off her thumb. There is only so much you can do to help control that situation. I applaud you for getting involved and...
  6. Those were two of my main symptoms-right along with chronic fatigue. I have been a million times better on the gluten free diet, though without a proper diagnosis I was still questioning and clinging to the idea that maybe it wasn't celiac. In the first 5 days, I lost 5 pounds and looked visibly thinner in the stomach. Then, on Saturday, I was baking...
  7. I do not have an official diagnosis for myself or my kids. It has been pretty easy with the girls to control their diet, but I was having a hard time at first. Then I was gluten free for 1 full week and cheated. After allowing my body to rest that long, my reaction was obvious and intense! That was all it took to have me fully on board. I walked right...
  8. Hijacking here for just a second, I had blood tests run recently that all came back negative (the panel was 4 or 5 tests). My question after reading this is how reliable are they since I've been gluten-lite since my youngest's diagnosis in October. I was gluten free for 2 months while nursing and then I was only eating gluten during some lunches-dinners...
  9. The mac & cheese most definitely contained wheat, unless you brought something special with you. The milk should have been fine, but the Pringles contain wheat-one of a handful of chips that do. Butterfinger candy bars do not contain wheat, but the granola bar most likely did or at the very least was made with contaminated oats.
  10. Thanks so much! Through the other thread posted, I found Open Original Shared Link. The only gluteny ingredient listed is a box of shortbread cookies. I'll use MiDel animal cookies and it should be all good. I can't wait to get some coconut and try them out for her!
  11. I started the gluten free diet on Monday at the recommendation of my doctor-even with negative test results. I have been slightly overweight since my 1st pregnancy. I haven't done anything extra to lose weight other than cutting out the gluten (which wasn't much since I already cooked evening meals gluten free for my girls). I lost 4 pounds in 4 days-is...
  12. I am a Brownie leader for my oldest DD and cookies are in! My middle DD is actually having the hardest time handling the fact that we can't eat them. She has gotten into someone else's orders twice now and glutened herself. Ugh. Any recipes out there for Samoa type cookies? That is/was her favorite and I would love to tell her we can make some soon....
  13. That list is really long and most of it comes down to 4 things-wheat, barley, rye and malt. There are a lot of additional "no-nos" that are wheat-based, but in the US if it doesn't say wheat in the ingredients it has to have the "contains wheat ingredients" warning on the label.
  14. As far as I know, A1 steak sauce is gluten free! There is tons of gluten free chocolate out there too so the treat you allowed yourself doesn't have to be something you use to "cheat" with this diet. My girls have been gluten free for 6 months and I've recently learned they got it from me. I've been gluten free for only a few days, but I feel better...
  15. Modified corn starch is fine, but if it says Modified Food Starch you need to check the label for the "contains wheat ingredients" warning. There is a Gerber Graduate soup that I found to be fine-chicken and rice-but the noodle ones are all wheat based. I hope that helps!q
  16. I don't know if it was me you were talking about, but I do have a toddler with celiac. Her favorites are fresh fruits-bananas and applesauce mostly. I buy a lot of Del Monte or Dole fruit cups-gluten free without the price. She also likes cheese cubes-Kraft makes pre-cubed cheeses and they often go on sale. Lunch is often baked potato or canned veggies...
  17. We started a gluten free daughter with my youngest, 10 months at the time, right after having blood work drawn. We did the research while we waited for results and came to the conclusion that we would not biposy regardless so we just started. I'm sure we weren't doing a great job because I didn't know about oats and I didn't change my own diet when I was...
  18. I voted no-I was formula-fed and also given cereal in a bottle from birth! My mom kept trying to convince me with all 3 kids that they would sleep better. I never fell for it, but did start them on cereal at aroun 3-4 months. That's just when the problems started with my youngest-the one who found the gluten intolerance for all of us. However...
  19. I noticed the same thing about the reduced sugar Cocoa Puffs, but I think that is because that cereal stopped being made when the ingredient change was made. I can't find it anymore and the last time I did it was at a clearance price-I bought every box on the shelf! I'm okay with not having it anymore. I don't usually buy sugary or chocolate cereal. It...
  20. I found it was much easier for the whole family to go gluten free with DD being so young (she is 16 months). She is still at the age to put things in her mouth and the other two were not great at keeping the crumbs up. She would find 1 Goldfish cracker on the floor and be sick for 2 days. It didn't take much of that for me to put them all on the same diet...
  21. I use the Wilton recipe too, but I have modified it a bit for my taste and preference. 1 c. shortening 1/2 tsp clear vanilla 1/2 tsp butter flavoring 2-3 Tbs water 1 lb powdered sugar Cream the first 4 ingredients, then add powdered sugar slowly. With the use of water and no egg white, this has a longer storage time. Just keep it airtight as...
  22. Mi-Del makes an animal cookie that my DD adored until we discovered her soy intolerance. Gerber sells, in addition to the wagon wheels and other process foods, freeze-dried snacks for toddlers. These are just straight up dried bananas, apples, corn and strawberries so they are gluten free. There may be other flavors by now too. Envirokidz cereals are...
  23. My DD is also 15 months old and I've found it is actually pretty easy to keep her on a gluten free diet. My difficulty with her is that she also has trouble with soy, chicken and beef. It has been harder with my older 2 because they are used to favorites, but babies and toddlers don't have all the starchy things ingrained yet. She loves fresh fruit which...
  24. There are actually 3 cereals in this new release from GM, 2 of which are gluten free. Little Einsteins Stars and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The Disney Princess Flakes are not gluten free!
  25. DD has gained nearly 7 pounds! She now weighs in at 21 lbs 2 oz and is 31.5" tall-a bump up on both growth charts. She is solidly in the 25th for weight and just over the 50th for height. Her doctor is now completely convinced despite negative test results!
