I have a big problem with it. Teaching at the culinary school here I found I cant go into the kitchen for a day after the bread class. Just too much in the air and if I breath it I have trouble and pain. Sometimes just walking though kitchens or stores where there is breading going on causes problems too. Did find that breathing in small amounts of flour...

ARCHIVED Costco's gluten-free Shopping
kenlove replied to mamaw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wish our costco in Hawaii had the Organicville and Beneditto. last time I checked in Feb. the only thing marked gluten free was the vitamins and one terrible tasting salad dressing whos name I forget. They carry Adeles Sausages many of which are gluten-free and very good. No gluten-free bbq sauce though but I'll check again on Tuesday. -
ARCHIVED Stamp Glue
kenlove replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No evidence other than what i've read on the forum. A year and a half ago I was getting glutened with some regularity and could not figure out why. Someone here suggested it might be glue in the envelops so I stopped licking... No more problems. Now I only have only 1 reason to be sick from paying bills! -- Ken -
ARCHIVED How Long Does Your Stomach Pain Last After Glutening?
kenlove replied to sunshinen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've never had problems more than 3 or 4 days after an accidental glutening by ingestion or by breathing flour. Usually react pretty quick. After 7 days It might be good to get checked out. Ken -
ARCHIVED Low Thyroid And Testosterone
kenlove replied to scottyfeelsick's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For me it was all related to gluten although I didnt know it. Had almost zero testosterone level in the middle of being sick and heart problems for 6 months. Finally diagnosed with celiac, went gluten free and with 2 months I was totally back to normal. I'm 30 years older than you but had never had a problem with anything until 2.5 years ago when this all... -
Well now that we are all in this conspiracy together... Good message. Thanks to many of these alternative movements small farmers have alternatives at least with candida free fruit

I don't think its intentional but they have been killing us since the 60s when the wheat was modified. Anything for the almighty dollar I guess. I think its why support of SlowFood movement, Buy Fresh Buy Local movements and farmers markets are so important. Then again nothing would surprise me -- even if we both disappeared! Ken

ARCHIVED Centrum Vitamins
kenlove replied to roxie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They really need to get their act together. They told me silver was ok (the batch number I have) and the regular ones my wife takes were not gluten-free. I've not had any problems from taking them but will not buy them again as they said I did have to call, and wait and wait and wait for them to answer with each batch number. -
When I visit my mother in Chicago we always go to bonefish too. It is a great place and hard to believe its the same company as outback which I've never been fond of.

ARCHIVED Centrum Vitamins
kenlove replied to roxie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I stopped all of them for a year after I was diagnosed but found my energy level really low and things not right. Thanks to Yolo and other members putting me onto some other gluten-free vitamins, I'm feeling much better with energy back to normal levels. -
ARCHIVED Centrum Vitamins
kenlove replied to roxie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maybe I should call them again with the same batch number that they told me was safe. COuld be we get to a different call center from Hawaii. I did switch to Nature Made and Costco for all the other vitamins. ken -
ARCHIVED Centrum Vitamins
kenlove replied to roxie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When I called them 6 months ago they told me I had to call in with the product number on the bottle each time I bought them. They said the formula changes with each batch they produce. I had 2 bottles here, regular and silver when I called. The silver was gluten-free and the regular was not. Ken -
ARCHIVED Soda Is Safe?
kenlove replied to MELINE's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Meline It sounds like some sort of cross contamination if the rice flour and baking soda was pure. Maybe it was the mushrooms or something from a few days ago. It seems like you should not have such a strong reaction to testing the pasta although I wont even cook other pastas now. If my wife cooks them she has her own pot for cooking. I also had toruble... -

ARCHIVED How To Tell What The Reaction Is From?!
kenlove replied to jewi0008's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
everyone seems a little different, for me it depends if I inhale something or eat something with unknown gluten or its from cross contamination. Anywhere between 10 minutes to a few hours after. The worst for me is when I inhale flour or something in the air. Just cant go into bakeries! -
ARCHIVED Hawaii The Big Island
kenlove replied to Naradowski's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi Judy, We live in Kona about 2 hours south of where you'll be staying. Hope you'll have a car as there are not a lot of food stores around Waikoloa Beach. There are some great restaurants that can prepare gluten-free meals given advance notice. There are health food stores and grocery stores in Kailua town, about an hour south of you. On the 19th if... -
ARCHIVED Non Alcoholic Drinks/juices - All Safe?
kenlove replied to motif's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think like with everything else, you need to read the fine print. I steer clear of any natural flavoring or caramel coloring when they are not well defined. Some teas have barley in them, especially Japanese teas like mugi cha. Green tea and regular Lipton types are usually ok. Some flavored coffees are questionable too. If its pure 100% it should... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Imports From Italy
kenlove replied to babysteps's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In my profile there is a link to a section on my site with other info on gluten-free foods I found in Japan at a food show. Many of which were from Italy. I got some from Bio Alameti (SP?) which was the best I've had yet. There are pictures from their catalog. Also gluten-free items form Venezuela and Thailand. Was surprised to find many gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED First-time Glutened - 8 Mths gluten-free - Help/advice?
kenlove replied to tiffj's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In my almost 2 years of being gluten-free, it's happened a few times. When it does it just deepens my resolve to be more vigilant in being gluten-free and not taking chances. At friends it's always very difficult no matter how hard they try. They just need to understand the fine points or you have to get together with them when it does not involve food... -
ARCHIVED Buckwheat?
kenlove replied to mati's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Like RiceGuy said, buckwheat has no gluten. You just have to make sure it is 100% buckwheat. The noodles and sometimes the flour, at least what we get in Hawaii are not always 100% buckwheat. Ken -
ARCHIVED Think I Got Gluten?
kenlove replied to TCW's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
COuld be a couple of things that caused it. Early on I learned to see if they were using real eggs, that is to say whole eggs and not some egg mixture put together by the cook for omelets and scrambled eggs. Some places do put flour in eggs or other questionable thickeners. I only order fried eggs now. It could also be CC from frying pans or grills or they... -
ARCHIVED Bread Fruit
kenlove replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Debbie, There are a number of different types of breadfruit and although they taste differently, they have the same starchy texture. It's a staple of the Polynesian and Micronesian cultures and one of the original trees brought to Hawaii by settlers in 700 AD or so. That said, it depends on how its eaten as to what it taste like. Often it's just put...
