Paula - I once burst into tears because I was making breakfast Sunday morning, and I accidentally used the non-gluten free spatula on my batch of pancakes... I had to throw it all out and make a new batch, and I ended up eating after everyone else, and afterwards my boyfriend asked me what was wrong and I lost it. It is a tough diet to stick with; people...

ARCHIVED Finding Humor In It All

I like that - it's cool that your family has brought the term into their vocab in reference to other things...! -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Doesn't Seem So Bad
sfm replied to amberleigh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just wanted to mention that I once got glutened by a chai latte (from somewhere other than starbucks). I think they may have used some sort of creamer in it that had gluten. Sometimes I can't figure it out - I have had similar symptoms from other food issues - but not exactly the same, and I always know when it's gluten, within 20 - 40 minutes... the... -
Patience is difficult when you feel so awful... I can empathize because it took me awhile to realize all the ways I could be get "second hand gluten". I cook for two young children who are not celiac, so I have had to become pretty creative to avoid it. I have an entire section of the counter that is strictly gluten free. I do not use wheat flour for...

The thing is, if you are still eating gluten occasionally (and it sounds like you are) then you are not giving your intestines a chance to heal. Then, when you eat something like tomato, which can be hard on your stomach, you react. Also, some people have delayed reaction to the gluten, so instead of getting sick right away, it can be a day or two later...

ARCHIVED Help! Have To Eat Gluten Again!
sfm replied to F.deSales's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It really depends on how much you feel you need a diagnosis. I've been gluten free for going on 10 months now, despite negative blood testing. Because I could tell from how much better I felt what the answer was, tests or not. Your G.I. does know what he's talking about, though. Lots of doctors don't bother telling their patients (or don't know) that... -
ARCHIVED Best And Worst Drs Opinions/advice
sfm replied to Meemsy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I saw a G.I. for my symptoms in 2005 - even mentioned that I usually felt sick after eating, and thought I might be reacting to certain foods. He did an upper endoscopy but no small bowel biopsy, told me I had reflux and gave me prilosec. When I asked him if the reflux accounted for the episodes of vomiting, diarrhea, etc., he looked at me like I had two... -
Those symptoms are pretty standard. Some people have constipation instead of diarrhea. My main symptom for gluten is pain - agonizing pain - on the left side of my abdomen. The gas and bloating I get with some other foods, or for a few days after I've been glutened (no matter what I eat).

I could be wrong, but I thought only some of the flavors of soy delicious ice cream are gluten free - I bought one that said it clearly on the label, so I've been reluctant to try the ones that don't.

ARCHIVED How Long Was It Until You Noticed A Difference On A Gluten-free Diet?
sfm replied to Luke987's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I began noticing a difference after about 3 days gluten free. The rest has been touch and go. It took me awhile to learn how to avoid cross-contamination, so I was occasionally still getting some trace gluten. It took awhile, too, to get to the point where I would realize, during the late afternoon, that I felt "normal" (no gas, no pain, no noisy... -
I replied before without reading the rest of the thread - so the answer is really no, you won't notice a difference eating gluten free snacks as opposed to gluten snacks - not while you are still ingesting gluten. If you are gluten intolerant, than you are constantly causing more damage to your digestive system, so everything you eat will continue to make...

Before I went gluten free, I was sick ALL THE TIME. It didn't matter what I ate, I always felt ill afterwards. It does take awhile before your body starts to heal; when the digestive system is screwed up, it doesn't like much of anything. Try to eat more whole foods (meat, vegetables, fruit) than processed foods like chips at first. Your system might...

ARCHIVED Anyone Get The Same Pain As Me
sfm replied to whattodo's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I do get very similar symptoms on gluten - pain on the left upper abdomen, plus lower. Mine is mostly left-sided, actually. My children know without me telling them when I've had gluten because I start rubbing my belly on the left. It can take longer than 4 days for symptoms to begin to subside, especially if this is the first time you've gone gluten... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Is Developed In The Dough?
sfm replied to stef-the-kicking-cuty's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had a lot of those "false" labor contractions / braxton hicks with my daughter (none at all with my son). When I finally went into "real" labor, I kept calling them braxton hicks contractions . It took me awhile to realize that they were getting stronger and not going away! My mother and sister laughed when I finally said, I think this is the real... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Is Developed In The Dough?

But eat light! The last thing you need in your system is greasy heavy food during labor. -
Please don't judge how parents handle their own gluten intolerance. My children don't eat a lot of gluten - but both have been tested, negative. Gluten may be poison to my body, but I don't see the need to place the same restrictions on them as I have to live by. I will have them retested regularly, and if it does become necessary, of course I would...

Did your husband have the genetic testing done? Because that's the way it is passed on, whether he has active celiac or not.

ARCHIVED Can Anyone Help Me Get Off Inexium?
sfm replied to Rosey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good point - I know the Braggs liquid is safe because I contacted the company directly. Rosey, I meant the liquid - I don't think Braggs makes pills. Drinking the liquid (if you have the same reflux issues I did) - does feel a little harsh on the stomach at the first gulp, but then it calms down. It's supposed to balance the stomach acid - but like... -
ARCHIVED Can Anyone Help Me Get Off Inexium?
sfm replied to Rosey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Rosey- I started with about 1 tsp with each meal. I found eventually that about 2 tsp after I ate seemed to help a lot. After awhile I began taking it only when I felt the onset of heartburn. There's no getting around the taste - it's awful. I used a medicine cup because I could drink it like a shot of whiskey! One thing about the pills... -
If you have a vitamin shoppe near you, they have a gluten free dairy free "Ultimate 10" probiotic (Vitamin Shoppe brand) that my GI was very in favor of. He said it was good that I was getting all 10 strains of beneficial bacteria.

ARCHIVED Can Anyone Help Me Get Off Inexium?
sfm replied to Rosey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Rosey - The apple cider vinegar helped a great deal when I was trying to get off prilosec. I would actually take it whenever my reflux acted up (just a small amount). I was the same way - I wanted to stop taking it, but I would get so sick (to the point of vomiting) when I stopped. I do still occasionally get reflux (I have a minor hiaital hernia... -
I did have both children tested - they are both positive for the celiac gene, but negative for the antibodies. My daughter, though, has stomach issues which could be related; for now, I am keeping an eye on both of them. They already know that I will have them retested regularly. My pediatrician's son is celiac - she refused to have him biopsied, because...

ARCHIVED Just Not Getting Much Better...
sfm replied to Bravie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been cross-contaminated a few times since I went gluten free - and it always takes me several weeks before I feel myself starting to get better again. I think some people are just more sensitive. The dairy is something I was very reluctant to give up, until I found that I am casein intolerant. I find that so unfair. It's not as painful as the... -
ARCHIVED What Do I Thow Out, What Do I Do, Will I Get Better?
sfm replied to F.deSales's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been gluten free - mostly, except for contamination - since November 2006. It took me awhile to realize how important it was to keep everything from being near anything with gluten. I'm a single mom with two kids who are not gluten free - we now have separate toaster ovens (and I use "mine" to cook quite a bit), and the counter where my toaster oven... -
Susan- I think that it's difficult enough for us to get our heads around how to stay safe, and even more difficult for our family. I am a single mom with two children, 11 and 8 (not gluten free). They are willing to try some of "my" food - my daughter loves the brown rice macaroni. But it took awhile for them to understand cross contamination...
