ARCHIVED A Loaded-with-gluten Question
sfm replied to Silverfyre's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry for the late reply - I take 'Renew Life' Fiber Smart - it comes in either capsules or powder. I take the capsules, but I know the powder comes with an additional probiotic blend, which is also good. I get it from Vitamin Shoppe, but it's a brand that is probably available at other vitamin or health food stores. I hope that helps! Sheryll -
I take "Renew Life" Fiber Smart - it's gluten and casein free, and it has helped tremendously with my "D" problems. I got mine at the Vitamin Shoppe. You can get it in capsules or powder (I prefer capsules). The powder also has a probiotic blend included. Renew Life also makes a triple fiber, but I'm not sure what's in it. Sheryll

ARCHIVED Glutened At A Restaurant And Feel Lousy!
sfm replied to chatycady's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you've had one of those experiences - I've had a few, myself! I know it can feel like everyone's out to get you. I think it's more ignorance than anything else. Some people think that heat "kills" the gluten - as if it's a bacteria! When I go out, I usually avoid sauces, if I can - sometimes the restaurant can just eliminate it ... -
I think sometimes we forget how easy it is to get "second hand gluten" - let alone our loved ones... But I think it's important to make them understand (although it sounds like your husband does understand a little more, now). My children have realized over time how serious it is - I think when my daughter walked in on me vomiting after serving them regular...

ARCHIVED Ever Been Glutened By Someone Who Was Trying To Prove You Would Not Be?
sfm replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You make some valid points.. I always think of eating as a risk unless I oversee every single detail - and even so, I sometimes contaminate myself. I am starting to realize how much more my kitchen needs to be separated in order for me not to get sick at all. -
I have been going through something similar. Sometimes I just get tired of having to be so hyper-vigilant. I always pay the consequences afterward, and remember why. But lately I have been realizing how many opportunities there are in my house for cross contamination. My children tested negative for any gluten sensitivity, although they both have the...

The restaurant thing took me awhile. It's hard when you feel like you're going to be seen as 'high maintenance'. I have found that most places are more than willing to do their best. I had a waitress make my salad herself to make sure there was no chance it was contaminated, and this was just a little pub restaurant... Orange juice? I never heard that...

Oh, yeah, I've had that one, too!! And you want to tell them you'd kill someone for a slice of apple pie that doesn't taste like dirt...!

I hear what you're saying, Deb. I do, sometimes, get frustrated because I have to be so careful about CC, and that my friends and family try, but don't always understand how easy it is to accidentally get glutened. But they do try to understand, and I appreciate that they try. I would never expect someone not to have their own gluten - laden food simply...

ARCHIVED A Loaded-with-gluten Question
sfm replied to Silverfyre's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Chris - I had a similar problem, although I am sure I wasn't being exposed to any gluten. I added a fiber supplement to my diet (making sure it was gluten and casein free) and found that it helped a great deal - I know it sounds backward, but it has made a big difference in my daily "routine." Sheryll -
Jerry - Sugar alcohols can cause D, so it may not be a gluten thing. Sheryll

I once accidentally "glutened" myself by serving my kids some pizza... you know the flour on the bottom of the pizza slice? Well, I ate my own dinner without washing my hands, and got very sick. I didn't realize how careful I had to be! Live and learn, right?

ARCHIVED Physically Feeling Better!
sfm replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I actually thought a lot of people actually gained weight once their bodies started actually begin to absorb nutrients better. I did lose, at first, but only because I was only eating fruit, veggies, and meat. Once I discovered substitute breads, pasta, etc., I gained a little. Be patient - continue to eat healthy and your body will become healthier... -
It sounds like you had an intervention from your daughter, Jerry! My children are very aware and sensitive to my problem, even though I've only been gluten free since November. But they remember me getting sick. Two weeks ago I accidentally glutened myself by serving them pizza, then forgetting to wash the flour off my hands before I ate. My 1...

Fraternal is two eggs, two sperm. That semi-identical thing is strange, I never knew that was even possible...
-
I have been accidentally glutened several times, and had the same thought (darn, I didn't even enjoy it!!!)

SEMI - IDENTICAL??? And what would that mean, exactly? They do or don't come from the same egg?

ARCHIVED New Here, Newly Discovered Gluten Problems
sfm replied to HealingIrish's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Kelly - Welc ome! I love this site. First off, spelt is wheat - just a different type, so you should avoid it. Also, ice cream can have wheat, or be cross contaimated if you got it fresh somewhere, where they used the same scoop for another type with, say, cookie dough, or oreos. It takes awhile to figure out all the places where gluten can... -
I had to eventually eliminate coffee - but can still have a chai latte at Starbucks (with soy - I also have casein sensitivity), and that seems to be okay (Thank god for still being able to have caffeine in some form).

LOL Jerry! You are so right, some of the bread is awful! Do you have a Whole Foods near you? Their 'gluten free bakehouse' sandwich bread is pretty good. A little crumbly, but tasty. I've had some decent gluten free english muffins - I can even get my little ones to eat those. Good luck - I've definitely had my share of awful substitutes.. Sheryll

Megan - I found out about my own gluten intolerance by going gluten free. Within a week I felt better than I had in ages - not that I didn't have ups and downs, and it took me some time to understand about cross contamination, and how to read ingredient labels thoroughly. Eventually I got together the money to have several tests run, including genetic...
