    ARCHIVED Having A Bad Week

I have heard other people mention that. If my children were younger, maybe. I did have both blood tested for celiac, which came back negative. I have talked with them about how it is a strong possibility that they will develop symptoms at some point. But it seems like more trouble than it is worth to ask a 10 and 7 year old (particularly the 7 year old...
  3. I went to Red Lobster recently and had the best meal. I explained to my server about the gluten allergy, and she was more than accommodating. She asked questions about three separate dishes for me, and I was able to have a great meal. I didn't tell her that her tip depended on her acommodating me, but I can say she did get a great tip! I'm not sure what...
  4. I managed to gluten myself twice this week - nobody else's fault. My children are sometimes better at remembering how to keep me from getting sick than I am! I think I have figured out what happened on Wednesday. I made some chicken soup at home, and brought it to work. Unfortunately for me, I have been reluctant to begin using different cookware...
  5. Right - at least let it be a huge slice of apple pie or something!!! I have been dealing with being cross-contaminated lately, because I have become complacent (read: lazy), and I guess I haven't quite realized how important it is to avoid all possibilities of contamination. I actually wear gloves when preparing my children's food (my daughter teased...
  6. NoGluGirl - I'm just wondering - why are you at home "against your will"? Sheryll
  7. I'm thinking something was cross contaminated. I have been having some difficulties with that lately, myself. Even fresh fruit, depending on where it came from, may have been near something with flour or crumbs. Or the potato, maybe, from the cafe? If it was prepared there, and anything with wheat was near it, there is the potential for contamination...
  8. Unfortunately, there is no real difference when you have gluten intolerance or sensitivity as opposed to celiac; the symptoms are the same. Some people are more sensitive to cross contamination than others (I happen to be one of them ). I do eat out, and have been learning that communication is key. Most places are willing to accommodate me and ask...
  9. I'm not sure how long ago you were diagnosed, but I know that it can take a long time before all the damage is gone. I know my stomache is still sensitive to a lot of things besides gluten. So maybe it just needs time? Sheryll
  10. Good one!
  11. I say I am gluten intolerant. I know it's pretty much the same as celiac, but people either seem to understand, or I just give them a basic explanation (I get very sick from eating anything with wheat, barley, rye or oats), and they seem to get it. If you had positive bloodwork for celiac, then the biopsy could have just missed the damage, no? So just...
  12. Sometimes children seem to be the ones to grasp the concept easiest - my own children are very careful about cross contamination.
  13. I agree that they probably don't mean any harm. I know it is frustrating, but I think it might be less pity and more that they are appreciating how difficult it can be.
  14. I'm not sure your boss meant any harm. My friends an coworkers are curious about how I deal with my food issues, so they ask because they are honestly wondering.
  15. I have been gluten free - mostly, except for when I get cross contaminated - since November 2006. When I do get glutened, I feel the pain entirely on my left side. I did some research on related problems like gall bladder, but that's on the right hand side. So I'm thinking that the damage to my intestines must be mostly on my left side, so that's why...
  16. The Thunder Down Under is amazing - and Outback has become my favorite restaurant. Their servers are obviously given a great deal of information about dealing with food intolerances, and they are willing to go out of their way to have something prepared the way you would like it. I also had another desert from there, caramel apple oblivion (without the...
  17. I was going to say the same thing! I would definitely be wary of using a second hand bread machine..
  18. Are you sure that it isn't a dairy issue? I would love to have yogurt, but can't because I have a casein sensitivity. It's not as severe an intolerance as the gluten, but I still have to watch my dairy. Just a thought.. Sheryll
  19. I had to give up coffee... And boy, did I fight it!! I drink chai tea now, as it is spiced, so it has a bite to it, which is a little more interesting to me than plain tea. It has made a big difference with my acid reflux - which could be causing your nauseau. Sometimes when we get rid of the gluten, we start noticing all the other things...
  20. I was diagnosed casein sensitive, as well - but I notice that as long as I don't overdo it, I'm okay - where with gluten the slightest bit makes me violently ill. So I don't think it's the same - at least for me. Sheryll
  21. Elevated antibodies can't diagnose tissue damage, only the endocscopy / biopsy can do that. It means that your body is producing high levels of transglutaminase IgA in response to gluten sensitivity. The genes for gluten intolerance mean that you can develop gluten intolerance (which, based on your antibody levels, you probably have, already). These...
  22. Laila - All of those earlier symptoms can be associated with celiac. My own gluten intolerance increased rather sharply over the last two to three years - usually they say there can be a trigger. But before that, like you say, there were flare ups. I have heard that codeine is constipating - so that is one symptom it could have been masking - and it...
  23. Nikki- I'm interested in what you said because I also began having symptoms after my second child was born. And yet, I have always said that "I've never had a great stomache." And the first time I ever went to the doctor for stomach problems, I was 14. I read somewhere that sometimes celiac / gluten intolerance symptoms can calm down when children...
  24. The whole celiac vs. gluten intolerance clarification seems to be such a gray area. My bloodwork came back negative for celiac, but my doctor (to his credit) said that did not mean I am not gluten sensitive. There are certain levels of the antibodies, and they are subject to a doctor reading them. The biopsy is supposed to be the 'gold standard' and...
  25. Andrew - Make sure your wife stays hydrated - that has a lot to do with milk production - and the prenatals are so loaded with vitamins that should help, too. It takes awhile to feel better (still working on it, months later). A gluten free fiber supplement can help with the diarrhea - I take 'Renew Life' Fiber Smart, but there are others. Also, a probiotic...
