It's casein - a protein in milk. Sometimes you can have a sensitivity to casein, also (I do) - which means that I'll always have a problem with dairy (I think I miss that more than the gluten). Sheryll

ARCHIVED Old-timers Help! Reacting Again!
sfm replied to oceangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lisa- How depressing - I LOVE that Erewhon crispy rice cereal.... Arrowhead Mills make both puffed rice and puffed millet cereal - not quite the same, but it's not a bad substitute. No added sugar - I'm hypoglycemic, so I usually just add splenda, but you could probably add fruit. Sheryll -

I also began to eat a lot of nuts after going gluten free (about 8 months now). Recently I began to have symptoms very similar to glutening and couldn't figure out what was going on. I've been to an allergist and another gastroenterologist. It turns out that I am allergice to walnuts - digestive upset can be one of the signs. What eventually hit me... -
Jami - I'm single, too, but for longer. I would say (like you mentioned) to take it slow in that department. In time, you will feel better - I felt great at first when I went gluten free, too, but then not so much. Now it's good days and bad, but I read someone else's post that said they had the same experience within their first year. I think...

I have to say that your wife's symptoms sound exactly like mine when I get glutened, except that I get D instead of C. And my understanding of the appendix is that it's in the lower right part of the abdomen, so I'm not sure how those symptoms would relate to appendicitis. Sheryll

ARCHIVED So All Of My Blood Work Came Back Perfect,
sfm replied to ami27's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I went through something similar with my ex-husban - twice, since our divorce. He disappeared for several months each time, then suddenly wanted to be back in my children's lives - no apology, no explanation to them. It's very stressful to have situations like that. Having said that - since there are also physical conditions which could cause symptoms... -

My son tried the envirokidz cocoa pebbles and they tasted just like the sugary kind - only better for you! -
Recently, after being mostly gluten free (besides a few accidental glutenings) for over 6 months, my stomach started acting up again. The symptoms were nowhere near as severe as when I eat gluten, but they were similar, the nauseau, pain, bloating, diarrhea, just scaled down somewhat. I know that others on this site have mentioned similar experiences, so...

ARCHIVED College Student Recently Diagnosed With celiac disease

It has only affected me if I don't wash it off, then put my hands in my mouth (like eating something afterwards). My children are not completely gluten free (although they do eat some of "my" foods), which means that I have had to become hyper vigilant when preparing their food for them. But as long as I wash my hands each time I touch something with gluten...

ARCHIVED Just Getting Started With Gluten-free Lifestyle
sfm replied to chronicbabe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I definitely agree with that! When I cook dinner, I always make extra. Lots of times I can take it to work for a more interesting lunch that week. Sheryll -
I never heard of weaning off gluten before. I thought a lot of the initial symptoms may be withdrawal, but also because your intestines are so messed up.
-
I think my stomach will always be more sensitive that most people's. I have also been finding that I notice more when things do bother me, than I did when my stomach was such a mess that anything I ate bothered me. Or maybe others just think their symptoms are just 'normal' for them! (I know I did for a long time ) I always remind myself that...

Sandi - Right now, your intestines are still a mess. The diarrhea might be around for awhile, the intestines take awhile to heal. Taking a gluten free probiotic supplement is usually recommended, as well as digestive enzymes (always check for gluten free). I also take a gluten free, casein free fiber supplement, which was finally what stopped my diarrhea...

Your symptoms sound very similar to mine. Please keep in mind that although you may feel somewhat better within a few days, it can take months before you feel totally normal. Continuing diarrhea is common; your intestines do not heal instantly. Finding a gluten free fiber supplement helped me with that. My stomach is still sensitive to other things...

ARCHIVED Brand New, Gluten-free For 3 Days, Have Questions
sfm replied to chellalee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Chellalee - I'm not really sure that reactions get stronger after going gluten free. I think it might be more a question of feeling better for the first time in so long, and having something to compare with that awful feeling. I have heard some folks on here says that they don't have an immediate, obvious reaction to gluten. I'm not sure what that... -

ARCHIVED Am I Crazy, Or Are Women More Frequently Gluten Intolerant?
sfm replied to jonney's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not sure that men are less likely to complain about themselves - at least, none of the men I've known are... But I do agree that, in general, they tend to wait longer before doing something about an illness.. at least, in my own experience that has been true; I don't know about all men. -
ARCHIVED Very Interesting Article In The New Scott Free Issue
sfm replied to jerseygrl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't always think of things like that - but my boyfriend will not kiss me, after eating gluten, until he has had a chance to rinse his mouth or chew gum for awhile. My children are the same way, and won't drink from my straw or my cup if they've been eating gluten. And it does make sense, if you think about it... I am extremely sensitive to very small... -
I think (and this was just my experience) that I feel sicker now because I'm not sick all the time, my body is not used to feeling this way. Before I went gluten free I was sick nearly every day, and I think I got used to it. Because when I started a gluten free diet, I was shocked at being okay by late afternoon, not in pain or queasy or gassy, etc. ...

ARCHIVED Do Symptoms Get Worse Before They Get Better On A Gluten Free Diet?
sfm replied to Eva H's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had similar difficulties - but it was because I hadn't realized how careful I needed to be about food being contaminated with gluten. Also, your system can be sensitive, in general, and to other foods as well. -
ARCHIVED Needing More Advice Before My Dr. Appt. Tonight
sfm replied to Walter S's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Walter - it depends on the peanuts! If they are the packaged, salted or roasted kind, they sometimes have wheat flour in the salt or seasonings, so that may have been the culprit. Maybe your nutritionist has some insight to offer. When you say the doctor suggested peanut butter on toast, I assume you mean toasted gluten free bread? Sheryll -
I have very wavy hair, and I use Pantene culy hair shampoo and conditioner, with Garnier curl construct mousse and curl cream (for frizz). I hope that helps! Sheryll

I've tried the Rice Noodles - they're delicious. My daughter (10) will eat them, but my son (7) is quite picky, and if it doesn't taste and feel like normal, he balks at it. And since there is no other parent to cook for my children, I do have to prepare some gluten foods. But I think I will do the disposable containers.
