ARCHIVED Probiotics - Culturelle
missy'smom replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I posted my results on a diabetes forum and not a single response. I imagine there is some scoffing there too. Inflamation causes an elevation in blood sugar. That's partly why food allergies can raise blood sugar as well. Casein makes my BG jump up a good big notch and not just the meal I consume it in but my whole baseline and all post meal numbers... -
ARCHIVED Glucose Tolerance Test.... I'm Scared :(
missy'smom replied to SleepyBunny's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Not today but afterwards in the next week or so, when the reports are back, make sure you get copies of the results and know your numbers so that you can learn and make decisions and choices from an educated perspective. Don't think about your numbers today, just get the job done and relax and give yourself a reward for being a trooper. -
ARCHIVED Glucose Tolerance Test.... I'm Scared :(
missy'smom replied to SleepyBunny's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well, maybe I am seeing this too late and replying too late. Maybe you're already off to get it done. If I remember right, they do stick you more than once. I got 5 They rotated sites/arms. But you can ask if there are options. Good for you for taking along mom and asking for what you need-to lie down. Go ahead and whine. If it helps get the job done... -

I found a way to use some of the marsala-cranberry sauce! We bought smoked pork loin slices and Dh likes it with cranberry sauce-cranberries were $1.49 a bag last weekend so marsala cranberry sauce it is this weekend! -
ARCHIVED Low Carb
missy'smom replied to scottyg354's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Carbs affect blood sugar. I used low-carb to manage diabetes. When I was LC, I got completely non-diabetic numbers but off LC I need insulin. If you are checking into things you might want to check up on your blood sugar. Any test that reflects just 1 point in time is not sufficient. You also should be tested while you are eating carbs and not on LC for... -
ARCHIVED Freezing Single Batches Of Leftover Soups
missy'smom replied to researchmomma's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I also don't like heating plastic in the microwave. There are a number of things you can do. Cool it down completely, put it in: ziplock freezer bags any repurposed/recycled plastic container(if you don't want to spend $) I often use margarine tubs. They stack well. the usual plastic containers In the a.m. take it out of the freezer, plop into a... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Some Really Inexpensive Lunch Or Meal Ideas?
missy'smom replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I take about 4 oz. ground beef, maybe 1/2 cup of chopped or sliced cabbage and some onion and sautee in a fry pan. Towards the end, add garlic of desired, salt and pepper and oregano or thyme. At the very end, I add in about 3/4 c. leftover rice. I leave in plenty of the fat from the beef and that helps keep the rice from sticking. If you want a little color... -
ARCHIVED The Great 2012 Freezer/panrty Clean Out
missy'smom replied to missy'smom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for asking. It's still hanging out in the pantry waiting to be used. Still working on clearing out. Used up the rest of the fresh pie cherries in the freezer that we purchased at a farmer's market many months ago. Put them in an apple pear crisp today. Used up some of the green thai curry paste this past weekend and some of the the... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Resources In Other Languages
missy'smom replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just thought I'd post the link anyway. Didn't think it would help you. Maybe it will help someone else who reads this post. Japanese is our other language/culture so I know exactly what you mean when you mention the translations-it's impossible to read, even when you know the person and how they talk and you try to use the online translation for things... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Resources In Other Languages
missy'smom replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My DH is not a native English speaker. There is a fair amount of info available in his native language but he is very busy at work with very little down time so it takes him a long time to catch up and educate himself, add in the usual factors/obstacles that even a native speaking partner goes thru...at some point he catches up a bit but there is always some... -
ARCHIVED Probiotics - Culturelle
missy'smom replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well Irishheart, I have to thank you for encouraging me on another thread to take my probiotics regulary. I've been taking them every or nearly every day for about 2 weeks and my insulin needs have suddenly decreased. I had noticed and reported in the past that my BG seemed lower in the period of time following when I took the acidophilus after a meal. Now... -
ARCHIVED School Lunch Suggestions

I used to make bentos and lots of variety, nice arrangement etc. but my 13 yr. old wanted "normal" looking meals when he hit Jr. High. There is a link on my profile to photos of our bento days. Still lots of options: Today was ham and cheese toasts-ends of gluten-free bread loaves with chopped ham and cheese sprinkled on and broiled, fruit on the side... -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Dairy Free Kid's Meals?
missy'smom replied to JWSJ's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
PF Changs also has a number of gluten-free menu items that have no dairy or gluten. My son gets the fried rice often and I get the snow peas and shrimp in moogoo gai pan sauce-that one is very mildly flavored and you can change up the veg if you kiddo doesn't like the one that comes with it. I have some veg allergies so I substitute. Yes, you do pay more... -
ARCHIVED Glucose Tolerance Test.... I'm Scared :(
missy'smom replied to SleepyBunny's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, do get tested if there is any question. Blood sugar issues can be very manageable but you need info to do it and the earlier the better. I too have diabetes and have had an Ogtt twice. If you are concerned about fainting, ask to lay down. They should respect that. I do every time I get a blood draw because I am a fainter. I always choose a lab that has... -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Dairy Free Kid's Meals?
missy'smom replied to JWSJ's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I eat gluten-free and CF. I can get meals at Chili's and several other restaurants. It may not be a "kid's meal" but you should be able to find kid friendly fare. My son and I get bunless burger patties, applesauce is sometimes available or canned mandarin oranges, you could bring along a small container of "butter" like Earthbalance spread in a baby tupperware... -

Quinoa-either the pasta or the whole grain, can be cooked and eaten like oatmeal for breakfast, add in cinnamon, apples, rainsins etc. and your "milk" of choice potatoes- you can par boil, chop, pan fry the day before and then just warm them up in the microwave the next a.m., add in chopped ham, onion and bell peppers as desired when you are pan frying... -

ARCHIVED Environmental Allergies?
missy'smom replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you looked up food cross-reactors to your environmental allergies or what's currently on the environmental radar in your area? Oral allergy syndrome? although I am not sure that you are displaying symptoms of that. You might want to consider nasal rinsing in addition to the meds. Helps clear out those allergy particles and might help with the headache... -

Good to know it lasts a long time(acording to that recipe link) and sherried mushrooms sounds good. Well, if it can be used like cream sherry, then I can do like grandma did and use it in fruit cake next Xmas! I may try to soak some raisins in it and use them in a "tea" bread-apple and raisin. -
ARCHIVED Environmental Allergies?

Is there anything you were exposed to more during the holidays? Last Xmas my fingers started getting numb so I thought, "what have I been touching/handling more lately?" I already knew I had a latex allergy so I thought, tape, envelopes, pens etc. as I had been preparing Xmas cards around that time. I started calling companies and asking about latex and... -
