  1. They are different mainly because they're different tests that look for different digestive and bodily responses. The blood tests only see if there's a measurable amount of antibodies floating around in the body yet. It is not very accurate for children under 7. Often someone can test negative with the blood test, particularly at your child's age,...
  2. Very similar, though I didn't have to freeze only refrigerate, and I also had to smear portions onto different swabs all three days, and each day I had to do it from one sample in three places - beginning middle and end. You know, between this, the vomitting, insanely explosive diarrhea, there is very little that makes me gag anymore. Even my husband...
  3. We did a 3 day stool test, too, but it wasn't to test for Celiac Disease. It was to test for parasites and blood. Were you doing the stool test from Enterolab or was it a stool test prescribed by your doctor? The stool test from your doctor most likely was the same we did. It was a real fun one, too (don't know the emoticon to express sarcasm or else...
  4. Ben & Jerry's scoop shop and Baskin Robbins are great places to go. They'll let you know if something has gluten (or look it up for you - B & R actually lists the 8 major allergens on their flavors, B & J has ingredients on hand), wash the scoops in a separate fawcett (sp?) so there isn't residue from other scoops, and scoop from a clean, untouched...
  5. I will have to try that vegan ice cream recipe soon - it sounds delicious! And I was planning on trying pumpkin soup soon, too, once the weather out her in SoCal drops down below 85 degrees (it was a hot one this weekend - had to stick with the cold recipes!)
  6. Well, I've played around with pumpkin a lot, too, and came up with this ice cream. It's got a very rich, caramel-ly taste to it that blends nicely with the pumpkin. It's not vegan, but it is quick to put together (it tastes like it's a custard base ice cream, but not) and gluten free, for those who might like it: Pumpkin Praline Ice Cream (1) 14 oz...
  7. I actually made some great pumpkin muffins with coconut & pecans, but I can't find the recipe I created. As soon as I do, I'll post it. Or, if not, I'll create a new one probably over the weekend - it's been a few days since I finished off my homemade pumpkin praline ice cream
  8. I am such a pumpkin fanatic that I'm surprised my skin isn't orange from eating so much of it. And I'm a firm believer it's a treat for year round what with pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin ice cream, and now pumpkin polenta custard - I'll try that very soon!
  9. "In fact, although my mom has some carb issues (and mild fibro myalgia), my daughter is the only one with food allergies on either side." So you know, fibromyalgia can be a symptom of Celiac Disease. A woman who runs the Celiac support group in our area used to also run a fibromyalgia support group before being diagnosed with Celiac Disease. According...
  10. We do "Mexican Pizzas" at our house. I very thinly slice a variety of veggies - cauliflower, onion, broccoli, carrot and bell peppers - and sautee them (they cook really quick when they're small like this with no "thick" chunks) and sometimes use a fajitas seasoning packet (McCormick is gluten free and vegetarian). I also heat up some vegetarian Rosarita...
  11. We were told to use mineral oil when we were trying to get things moving - 15 ml twice a day when he was 2 and 26 pounds.
  12. I like to use Mi-Del gluten free pecan sandies and ginger snaps for crumbs, too. Also, Harvest Valley makes rice bran crackers that taste an awful lot like graham crackers but not quite as soft. They'd probably make a good crust. And you can also make a crust using pulverized almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, etc. Here's a link off of Whole Foods website...
  13. You know, one way to avoid the endoscopy but to help solidify a Celiac Disease diagnosis would be to get the gene test done. If with her blood test results and family history she also had one of the Celiac genes, you would have a fairly definitive diagnosis. You can get a swab test done through www.enterolab.com for (last time I checked) $149. This is...
  14. Neither of my kids have had any bad reaction, except for the one time where my son had 25 crackers in one sitting and nothing else. But I have a feeling that wasn't because of gluten It is produced in a facility that also produces wheat products, but it's not on shared equipment. At least for us, I find that this is good enough to keep away any gluten...
  15. Our son was "full of poop", too. He would have constipation for 3-5 days, have one slightly hard poop, then two more times of out of control diarrhea. Then the cycle would start again. They found that his intestines were blocked - either from something or from inflammation - and the reason why if he did go it was predominantly diarrhea was because only...
  16. The endoscopy is relatively easy - it goes by quick, your home soon after, and at least for us, there was no lingering after effects by the time we got home. He was eating normally and playing. My son was 2 years/2 months when he had the endoscopy. And I'm sure you are doing this already, but if she might have Celiac (and it sounds like there's a good...
  17. I know it's hard right now, and events like this do NOT make it easier, but I promise you, it gets better. You're still at the beginning phase where you and she are still mourning about how things used to be. She's also still learning herself that she can't just eat whatever is handed to her, and when she sees a treat of any kind, sweet or savory, it's...
  18. Yeah, I do cornbread stuffing, too. I make cornbread based on Pamela's Ultimate Baking & Pancake Mix cornbread recipe (often on the back of the bag, or else on their website at www.pamelasproducts.com ), then make Tyler Florence's carmelized onion & cornbread stuffing Open Original Shared Link I increase the stock closer to a 1/3 cup, and I also...
  19. I do this all the time; in fact, I got a dozen cupcakes in the freezer right now. Anytime my 3 1/2 year old is invited to a birthday party, we thaw one out and put a little frosting on it. And if I'm actually hanging out at the party, too, I bring one for his baby sister and me as well. They hold up great. I also recently got the bug cakelette pan from...
  20. Julia, and everyone else whose significant other isn't around a lot due to work or any other valid (or invalid ) reason, I'm sorry that the brunt of this has to be left to you. I know what it's like - it would be great if both of you could be full time parents all the time, but money has to come from somewhere. So inevitably, one parent has to take the...
  21. Our son is almost 3 years and 10 months and all we've gotten him to do is pee on the toilet 5 times in the last month. We can't get him to do anything else. He's absolutely PARANOID when he doesn't have his diaper on. He begs and cries for it to be back on. He doesn't even like it off when he's taking a bath. He's been gluten free for over a year and...
  22. I agree with everyone's responses for both problems 1 and 2, but I'd like to ask one question regarding problem #2: Where does your husband stand on this? If I had a problem with my in-laws regarding the diet, it wouldn't just be me talking to them about it. My husband saw first hand just how sick our son was; since I had to stay home with our 3 day old...
  23. For a K-12 kid, it can be a good idea if he/she is missing a lot of school because of gluten ingestion (i.e. cross contamination from school, or accidentally eating gluten food). Also, if they have bad g.i. symptoms when they get gluten (like my son), you can stipulate that he/she can use a private bathroom like the nurse's restroom whenever needed, no questions...
  24. When you cook with coconut flour, you'll be amazed at how much liquid they absorb. I add a little bit to my baked goods once in awhile and it really makes things more dense, too. But it does have a really nice flavor. For added fiber (and help reduce bad cholesterol levels) without having to increase liquid/egg amount, I now primarily add ground flaxseed...
  25. When our son was first diagnosed and we went completely gluten free (I messed up a little at first for the first two weeks by giving him all oat flour O's cereal and Rice Krispies bars), he only ate plain white rice, sometimes Bush's vegetarian baked beans, applesauce and cheese (we gave him Lactaid for about 2 weeks just before serving him dairy; after being...
