  1. "where I live I will never find good quality lemon olive oil, for example" Northern Elf - do you have a Trader Joe's nearby at all? They have a great lemon olive oil!
  2. When our daughter started solids and needed small foods that "melted away" when you put it in your mouth (the real reason why most little ones grow up on Cheerios ) we used gluten free Rice Krispies substitutes. Nature's Path (same company that also produces Envirokidz cereals) makes a crisped rice cereal that she really liked. When she was getting...
  3. We eat Envirokidz Gorilla Munch, Panda Puffs, Koala Crisp (kind of like Cocoa Krispies and less sweet than Cocoa Pebbles), Amazon Flakes and other Nature's Path cereals like their version of Rice Krispies, puffed corn, etc. (Nature's Path & Envirokidz are the same company.) We also like Trader Joe's gluten free granola.
  4. Get yourself a travel fridge - it saved us on our long drive: Open Original Shared Link this is a relatively small one, or Open Original Shared Link A slightly larger one. We were able to bring cheese, meat, yogurt, drinks, cut up fruits & veggies, dip, etc. Heck, since we travelled for Thanksgiving, I was even able to bring a pre-made...
  5. I made a Thanksgiving dinner for the very first time, and it was gluten free and at my in-laws house. But it turned out great - my father-in-law said it was the best Thanksgiving meal he'd ever had, and my husband said it was the most moist turkey he'd had (not bad for a first timer). I roasted a turkey, made delicious cornbread stuffing with onions &...
  6. Sorry to interrupt the teen section, too, but saw the vegetarian thread and thought I might post this website: Open Original Shared Link She's gluten free and mainly vegan/always vegetarian and her recipes are great.
  7. Paula - I so sympathize. My son is only 4, but last week he got some gluten through cross contamination at pre-school (much smaller amount) and he went crazy - pulled out some of my hair, scratched me until I bled, tried choking me with my shirt - literally crazy. And it took him several days to get past it, too - we only had one day where it was...
  8. I don't know the reason why they say between 4-6 months; from the studies I've read, it's at best a correlation and not causal. They found that fewer kids get full blown Celiac within a certain time frame if they are introduced at this early stage versus later. However, the test has not looked at whether or not these same kids get Celiac Disease later in...
  9. Depending on who you talk to, it's either 5 or 7 years old. This doesn't mean your daughter won't test positive; my son tested very positive at 2, but he was VERY ill and probably wouldn't be alive today if he hadn't been diagnosed. So, you can give her the test if she's eating gluten regularly, but if it's negative, it doesn't mean she is necessarily clear...

  11. I do, too. And depending on the manufacturer, I sometimes even use in small amounts things that are on shared equipment. A lot of stuff from Williams Sonoma and Trader Joe's are on shared equipment, but I haven't seen a problem. I heard that Trader Joe's will stop using the equipment on Friday afternoon and through the weekend so that everything settles...
  12. Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk is gluten free, and I use their recipe for the pie filling using Libby's pure pumpkin. McCormick's seasonings are all OK, too, you can even use their pumpkin pie spice. As for crust, there are a few options: Authentic Foods and Gluten Free Pantry make good crusts. If you're near a Whole Foods (at least in Southern...
  13. For pizza we love the Chebe Pizza mix. It's easy to make, and it has a nice crispy outside texture that's soft on the inside. We do individual pizzas with custom toppings. And for the pizza sauce, I mince & saute carrots, red bell pepper, onion & spinach. That way even if they have a "cheese" pizza they get some extra veggies This mix can also...
  14. Susi - Several other Children's Tylenol medicines, not just the grape flavor, are gluten free. I just received an e-mail with a long list verifying this since I also became concerned after your post - I had non-grape flavored Children's Tylenol, too, that I had been giving my kids. "The following McNeil products have been tested and do not contain...
  15. Open Original Shared Link also: Open Original Shared Link (lists several links about different medicines) My kids have bowel problems whenever I give them Motrin, too, but they've been new bottles. I think the problem is the Motrin itself can be a little hard on the tummy.
  16. My son has been gluten free for nearly 2 years (diagnosed at 2, now 4), and every time he's full from eating or about ready to poop, he has the big, hard round belly. It doesn't hurt him, and it's not constantly round and hard, and he can suck it in and it looks flat. But the belly hasn't completely gone away yet. He's actually a pretty fit kid with very...
  17. I add ground flaxseed (toasted and untoasted) to nearly EVERYTHING. Toasted flaxseed with yogurt for breakfast bread (flatbread and yeast bread) waffles pancakes (even my pumpkin pancakes) every type of muffin I make (untoasted flaxseed actually helps keep them moist longer because of the high oil content) quick breads cream of rice cereal...
  18. I made these cookies, adding a little cinnamon and a pinch of salt (since I used unsalted butter) and dried cherries, and they were tasty. Flourless Oatmeal Cookies Open Original Shared Link
  19. I recently got this new cookbook from Williams Sonoma. It's great - the person who wrote it originally worked on regular gluten-filled cookbooks for Williams Sonoma (among others) and was a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle's food section for awhile. She was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and completelly re-taught herself how to cook. She has this...
  20. The gene test can be done with three different labs. Kimball Genetics and Enterolab both do a gene test using a swab. We went with Enterolab ourselves because it was so non-invasive for our little one, and it was cheaper, but it took two weeks to get the result. Kimball Genetics has a faster response time (24 hours within receiving specimen). Prometheus...
  21. Sarah - I'll share the flatbread recipe under the baking & cooking tips either later today or tomorrow. I'll let you know when I do; today's just a little crazy right now with Halloween. BTW, happy Halloween, everyone!
  22. At your grocery store or at a Trader Joe's, you can often find ground flaxseed meal. Once opened, you should refrigerate it, but it's high in fiber & Omega 3. Until you can get to Whole Foods, you could always get a bag of this and just add it to nearly everything: homemade chicken nuggets, homemade bread (I have a SUPER quick flatbread recipe that...
  23. Ugg, what a typo. I meant dark chocolate doesn't have milk! Thanks for catching that! And yes, lots of milk chocolate doesn't have gluten, too. Thank goodness - in my opinion milk & dark chocolate is a necessary food group in and of itself!
  24. Dark chocolate (which is the healthier kind) doesn't have gluten (though depending on the brand, there may be cross contamination or milk or even gluten), only milk chocolate. Also, there are some gluten free/dairy free ice creams out there, even some recipes, too (there's a vegan pumpkin ice cream recipe that actually looks delicious). You can check out...
  25. Most (not all) true vanilla extracts are gluten free, even if it's kept in grain alcohol since the distillation process for the alcohol removes the gluten. This is why people with Celiac Disease can still have scotch, whiskey, vodka, plain vinegar, etc. It's the beer and malt liquor (and malt vinegar), since they are not completely distilled, that you can...
