  1. Glutino crackers, regular and cheese, are one of the few specialty gluten free foods I buy on a regular basis. I like the regular ones with pepperoni and cheese on top.
  2. If what you do can be done with permanent Broadway shows, in movies or TV you might want to think about locating work in L.A., New York or Las Vegas.
  3. I'd be tempted to follow the bus in an RV, bringing my own kitchen with me. I doubt this is realistic, you would have to do the driving and gas is expensive (This doesn't even take into account the cost of the RV) Below are some other ideas that actually may work: If you know the hotels you are staying in in advance, contact them by e-mail and ask...
  4. Are flying or driving? Can you choose your own accomodations? Juliebove is correct that many hotels/motels have refrigerators and microwaves in the room. When I travel I do not stay with my co-workers. I have made it clear to my employer that I need access to a kitchen to maintain my health. This means I always have a rental car instead of sharing one...
  5. I only travel one week at a time to the same place. I stay at a hotel with a small kitchen. This allows me to prepare my own food. Take along a soft sided lunch box and blue ice ( I like the mats). In addition to food I buy or bring plastic flatware, paper plates and bowels, paper cups, ziploc bags ( sandwich and gallon) and one container with a lid...
  6. You have to be careful with french fries. They need to be cooked in a dedicated fryer. If they are fried in the same fryer as items coated with bread they will probably be cross contaminated. Also, many restaurant french fries are not pure potatoes. You would need to check with the restaurant about their gluten free status. You will need to verify that...
  7. I don't buy any vitamin unless the lable clearly indicates the product is gluten free. Look at the Nature Made brand of vitamins. I use these because the vitamins I have purchased it is clearly stated that they contain no gluten on the label. You will need to check the label on each bottle everytime you buy them. Also, Kirkland (Mutli vitamins Costco...
  8. Angie, You might also check with your local animal shelter. I know ours has more that just dogs and cats. They may have additonal ideas.
  9. Fiddle Faddle, I agree Ron is not correct. There is certainly no harm in trying a gluten free diet to see if it improves ones health. I think that "restrictive" can be interpreted two different ways. The way you and I think of it, that there are plenty of gluten free foods and that wheat, oats (Not Certified Gluten Free) rye and barley are only a small...
  10. I would suggest a trip to the pet store. Pet food has a list of ingredients on the back. Also, someone in store should be able to give you a quick lesson on the feeding and care of each animal you are considering. I don't think birds are an option. Most of the bird food has gluten unless you order expensive bird seed and make your own bird seed mix. ...
  11. I don't usually have any problem with strange or rude reactions from people. I try to explain it is very simple terms. Something like "I can not have wheat, oats, rye or barley, they will make me very ill" I don't mention gluten or celiac since these are in the vocabulary of most people.
  12. Boars Head makes the best pepperoni. I buy it presliced in packages.
  13. Actually, this was bdeanjon's idea. He asked if he could take one of us grocery shopping with him. The grocery store he mentioned is one of the chains in Southern California. Unfortunatley, he is too far away to make this practical. I agree, a shopping buddy would be very helpful to anyone new to a gluten free diet. I also think a shopping buddy would...
  14. If you have a WholeFoods near you the customer service desk can print out a list of gluten free foods in the store. The downside to WholeFoods is that it is expensive. I only pick up a few items there and buy everything else at Costco or the regular grocery store. The most budget friendly way to eat on a gluten free diet is cook sauces (spagetti, chili...
  15. I am not able to offer substiutions only another possible alternative. My son was in special education for many years (not celiac). On a number of occasions he was given or I requested an alternative project. Your son could do this in the library during science. My concern with this project is that there will be graham cracker crumbs everywhere in the...
  16. In my opinion one of the keys to eating gluten free is to throw out the concept of the "Standard American diet". You can every food other then wheat, oats (unless certified gluten free), rye and barley. I would suggest not trying to replicate what you were eating before, look for receipes that are naturally gluten free to make. There are many on this site...
  17. Super news.
  18. Sending Hugs. You'll get through this. I only have one suggestion (good, bad, or indifferent). You might want to consider taking an extra set of cloths with you to this class "miles" away from the nearest facilities. This might add an additional sense of security and increase your confidence, even if you never use them. This way you know you will be...
  19. Everyone is different. I know when I have been accidently glutened but the symptoms are mild. If I get accidently glutened several days in a row I get progressivley sicker.
  20. You'll do just fine. If it makes you feel more at ease, choose a seat by the door so you can leave and re-enter, if necessary, without disturbing the rest of the class. If you have not already done so, you can might want to sign up with the disabiltity office since Celiac is covered by the ADA and they can put into place the accomodations you need. ...
  21. Henry's Famers Markets also have a reasonable selection of gluten free foods in Southern CA. Below is the link to their "Find a Store" webpage Open Original Shared Link
  22. Where I live Borders has a much, much better selection of Gluten free books on the shelves. Speak with the local bookstores and ask about ordering the book at the store and having the book delivered to the store. I have done this at my local Barnes and Noble. Although I ordered the book I was under no obligation to buy it. It allowed me to look at a book...
  23. I have some staples that I like to always have around, so I buy more of these than I use in a week. I keep my gluten free flours and mixes in the freezer since I don't bake a lot. Otherwise, I only buy what I need for the week. It helps that WholeFoods is only 4 miles away if I need something in the middle of the week. I do not order anything mail order...
  24. I see in you post that you had some Dorito type chips and trail mix. Did you check the ingredients for these? Regular Doritos have wheat in them. I have also found wheat in trail mix. Also, it is possible that the hamburgers and hot dogs were all beef but somewhere along the line were cross contaminated. I generally bring along a cold meal I made...
