ARCHIVED Explaining Celiac Disease
Phyllis28 replied to Sillyyakdidi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't even bother to give it a name or accurate description to someone new. I simply explain that wheat, oats, rye and barley will make me very ill. Most people assume it is an allergy, which is ok. I will answer any further questions anyone may have. My family, co-workers, and friends receive the details. -
Angie, You might consider calling each of you hotels and ask microwave access is available. We will be going to Yosemite in April with no kitchen facilities. I asked about access to microwave and the hotel explained that while none was available in the hotel room there would be a microwave I could use at the food court or the Yosemite grocery store....

ARCHIVED Gluten-free On Long Flights?
Phyllis28 replied to JenKuz's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I would add rice bread and Gluten Free Bars (i.e. Enjoy Life, Glutino) packed in your suitecase when you leave. Ask the airline if there will be milk for coffee on the plane. If you can drink milk you can bring along gluten free cereal and eat it from one of the drink cups. I am not sure what restrictions you have on liquids. I bring a 2 oz bottle... -
Welcome lunches are not the norm where I work. Below are a couple of thoughts for your consideration: 1) Contact the departments' OA (Office Administrator aka secretary) and ask although I expect you'll will have to explain why you need to know. The OA should be able to find out. 2) Have the names of several safe restaurants in the area available...

ARCHIVED I'm So Confused
Phyllis28 replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have been telling people I can't eat wheat, oats , rye, or barley for the last 28 years. I explain that it will make me very sick. Most of the time people think it is an allergy and that's ok. The only people who end up with the explanation of celiac and gluten are friends, family and co-workers. By trail and error I have found this to work the best... -

Congratulations. Below is how I handle and view the world of office work: I pack my lunch with two blue ices and keep it under my desk (I don't want to be obligated to clean the refrigerator). Also, everything in my lunch is in either a container, a plastic ziplock bag or in it's original wrapping. I also bring snacks. I eat at my desk, but this is... -

Phyllis28 replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just like the rest of the population each individual should decide whether a flu shot is beneficial to their health. After a bad bout of the flu about ten years ago I try (I have missed a couple of years) to get a flu shot each year. Other than a sore arm for a couple of days I have never had a problem. I have also be flu free. -

ARCHIVED How Do People Cope With The Frustration Of Celiac Disease?
Phyllis28 replied to dagreen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease

I hope you are feeling better. Relatives, even though they do their best to accommodate a gluten free diet, don
