ARCHIVED When A Friend Is In Denial About Her Child's Symptoms
Juliebove replied to callalily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Food allergies can also cause these same problems. -
Yeah, I know. Baked potatoes aren't hard to do. They even make them for the microwave now, although I prefer mine to be actually baked. Doing them in the microwave gives them more of a steamed quality, I think. When done in the oven, I don't ever wrap them in foil because I thought that would steam them too. But I used foil for the crocpot and they came...

Eek! I just cleaned out my canned goods cupboard. Now I need to organize it better, which I think was part of the problem. I found stuff that expired in 2006. There were the cans of mushrooms that I found on sale. And wouldn't you know ever since then I have been getting fresh mushrooms every few weeks in my produce box so I didn't need them. There...

ARCHIVED Back To School Tonight... 10 Yrs Later
Juliebove replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sounds like you are doing better! I spent several years avoiding any food related things, for different reasons. I have diabetes and food allergies. I also have medical conditions that leave me disabled. I can go some places, but others are just too difficult for me to manage. I used to stay within 2 miles of my home, going only to the grocery or drugstore... -
ARCHIVED I Have A New School Lunch Idea!
Juliebove replied to Kara'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You have to read every label. Some are gluten-free, some are not. We also have additional allergies. Husband and daughter just prefer the uncured ones. -
We can't have eggs or dairy. Perhaps one day I will try it with some faux cheese, but husband doesn't really like that. In the meantime, I use the noodles, broken up and mixed with chicken and gravy. It's really good. I made it once with turkey and gravy because my mom is allergic to chicken but I can't say that I cared for it too much.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Homeade Pizza Crust
Juliebove replied to Live2BWell's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I like the Namaste mix. -
We don't eat a lot of cookies here and given our additional food allergies, it's really hard to get an edible cookie that will keep. Enjoy Life are one of the few we can eat. Even if I buy a box of them (cheaper than the 2 packs), I wind up losing money because I have to throw most of the box away. They seem to go bad very quickly once the box is opened...

ARCHIVED I Need A Recipe For Peanut Cereal Bars
Juliebove replied to Dyan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
School starts tomorrow and I made these so daughter could have them for breakfast. I did mess up though because I discovered that the big box of sliced apples from Costco were going to expire tomorrow. I then began thinking of making an apple crisp so they wouldn't go to waste. Daughter came in and said, "You're making TWO things!?", eyes all bright and... -
Learn to cook rice and gluten-free pasta. If there is a Trader Joes near you, you can buy precooked brown rice in a bag. There are also some flavored gluten-free rices that come precooked. I don't think they're too good on their own, but they are okay when mixed with meat. As for the toaster... Yes. You do need your own.

ARCHIVED Military Career Not Posisble With Careerillness
Juliebove replied to Candy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not likely that a person with any health problems would be accepted into the military. I have seen cases where they would not accept a person with a food allergy into the military. Now if you are diagnosed with something once you are in, that's a different matter. -
I send in 2 slice packs of Ener-G bread for my daughter along with single serve packs of almond butter and jam/jelly. They can be kept at room temp. As for the blood sugar issues... Can you keep a small amount of food with you? I used to bring a piece of a Slim Fast bar (probably not gluten free) and break of small pieces to eat. These days if I was...

Wow! My health food store is moving soon but I doubt they will be marking stuff down. They are not moving far.
-
Ha! I don't feel so bad now. I just hate it when I think I am out of something, forgetting that I have ordered it online. I've done that a few times.
-
I try to buy as much organic as possible. I just feel it is better for us, even if it costs more money! I like coconut oil and flour. I think it is healthy. I like avocado oil. Expsensive but good in mashed potatoes. Soy and dairy free chocolate for daughter. She likes it.

ARCHIVED Need An Allergen Free Birthday Cake Recipe
Juliebove replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
When my dad was on a diet, we used 1/2 a cantaloupe, turned upside down with holes poked in it for the candles. -
Eek! Replied to the wrong post again. That will teach me to reply in a hurry!
-
That would be tough! My local health food store is just around the corner and they are good to order gluten free stuff for us. And I can get some stuff at another store a few cities away, but I never know what they'll have in stock. I have driven out there for chocolate chips only to find they don't have any. Luckily another couple of stores close to...

ARCHIVED I Have A New School Lunch Idea!
Juliebove replied to Kara'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think the Llyods has soybean oil in it, or something else my daughter is allergic to. I used to buy the Kroger brand which looks just like Llyods but she wasn't allergic. Fred Meyer quit carrying it and QFC never did. More recently I found some other brand of BBQ shredded chicken that she loves, but husband thinks it tastes nasty. I have also found... -
Can't eat cheese and yes, tinned things go bad. I once bought some tomatoes that were outdated. Didn't realize it when I bought them. I thought... How bad can it be? Well it was bad! I also had a fresh can. The outdated ones were badly deteriorated and had little flavor left.

Don't have any use for a pie crust since I don't really have any way of making a pie. We only ever have Enjoy Life cookies. I generally use oatmeal for meatloaf and I never use coakings for anything. As for granola bars, there are none we can eat. But thanks!!

ARCHIVED Dairy Free Frosting (no Palm Or Soybean Oil)
Juliebove replied to still.joyful's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We do the glaze too. I suppose you could use coconut oil. Or there is a recipe on the Enjoy Life chocolate chips for making frosting. I think you just melt them and glend in some rice milk. I've never made it but my friend did and it was good according to my daughter. -
I don't have gluten problems but I do have IgG food allergies and I have had dyshidrosis. Oddly I had it bad when we lived in NY. But I don't seem to have it now. I didn't know about my food allergies then. I just know my allergies were out of control. I was taking Zyrtec and tried all sorts of drops and sprays. Was constantly sneezing and had a lot...

ARCHIVED Comprehensive Turtle Mountain Product Reviews.

Daughter liked the dark chocolate Cocunut Bliss until she tried the vanilla. She LOVES that! I got her some gluten-free cones and she is happy as a clam now. -
ARCHIVED Tastey gluten-free Protein Powder?
Juliebove replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I bought rice protein but didn't know how to use it since it says it blends well into puddings andd shakes and I don't do either. Daughter loves hemp shakes.
