  1. I don't have an oven thermometer. I will look for one. I lived in a couple of places that had really old ovens. I found with those, if I used cookbooks from the 40's and 50's the cooking/baking time was always accurate. With newer cookbooks I often had to leave the stuff in longer. The gas stoves they provided us with in the military housing were notorious...
  2. We brought some of our own food but the desserts that I made were not good. Daughter had some boxed chocolate chip cookies. She ate some and left some there for tomorrow when we are celebrating my SIL's birthday.
  3. I am not faulting this bread mix. I think it was because I couldn't use eggs. I made it before but can't remember what I used as an egg sub. However when I made it before, someone wrote to me and said there was a mistake made in the formula for the mix. I could not bake it as bread and instead had to bake it as bars. They sent me the modified ingredients...
  4. I think old aspirin can make you sick as well. I bought some from a convenience store in high school. I don't know if it had an expiration date on it or not. Some things did in those days but it was not required. They did smell like vinegar. I remember my mom's Dr. saying that old medicine doesn't usually hurt you and in most cases it just becomes less...
  5. The flour I wound up using had a best used by date of April 2010. The cake must have been good! They ate enough of it. I usually throw out things that are past the expiration date. I just dumped three cans of Rotel tomatoes. One expired in 2009. I need to be more careful to check dates on canned goods. The store where I used to shop was notorious...
  6. No room in the freezer. We can't use nut flour. Just rice and some blends, mainly. Cornbread mix came out great!
  7. I wasn't going to find out. They were past the sell by or use by date. I did use the flour blend that said use bt April. The cake came out weird on top. Frosting wouldn't stick to it. Daughter said it tasted fine but it made her feel like she would puke. It was a brand we'd never used before. I ordered Bette Hagman from here for next time. It...
  8. When my daughter was first diagnosed, I went overboard. Bought every mix, flour and baking thing I could find. Most expired and were never opened. I replaced things, trying to buy only what I had used prior. But then I would see a recipe for something and it would call for something I didn't have. Like garbanzo bean flour. So I would buy it. Again...
  9. Not good! We do have heat, but it's not enough. Had ice in th kitchen greenhouse window last night. Am going to bake a small cake now. The heat from the oven will help.
  10. i do that with zuchinni bread. But I don't really want pumpkin muffins.
  11. It will be eaten as bread. I don't have mini loaf pans. I mostly bake in foil pans now and bought full sized. We're snowed in so can't get other pans.
  12. My mom called and said we'll do Thanksgiving on Fri. So I'm redoing our meals. Chicken stew tomorrow. Lil Smokies in BBQ sauce for Thanksgiving, Thu. I can do those in the crockpot while I bake. Chicken is still partially frozen so that will have to be done on the stove.
  13. I have to go out soon and shovel. Commounity services for the blind is coming tomorrow. They pick up useful household items, toys and clothing that we no longer need. Have to put out trash, if they will pick it up! They still have not plowed the streets near where I live. I was worried about my friend, but she is staying with her son who lives near...
  14. I did do that with some kind of pizza crust that made two.
  15. We can't use eggs. I don't know how I would do half a loaf of bread though.
  16. I must have missed where someone posted about Quaker cornmeal. I use the mix from these people: Open Original Shared Link They used to sell the bread in sheetes. No eggs in it. My sheet arrived fine, but it broke due to a fall. Made good stuffing, but I won't be using that now. Just Ener-G bread. Currently we are snowed in. Parents did not buy...
  17. To me your food bill is cheap! I spend about that for my daughter and I. But then things are expensive here. I buy what I can at Costco. Some meat, cheese, canned stuff. Also carrots and apples. We eat a lot of rice, potatoes and popcorn.
  18. I can excuse one mistake at a restaurant. But two? I just usually don't go back.
  19. Thanks to whoever fixed my mistake!
  20. The bread and muffins are mixes so I can't really do half. I am going to try to use maybe 4 slices of bread for stuffing. We don't usually do leftovers because we aren't usually given any turkey to take home. My young adult nephew is unemployed so usually gets the leftovers.
  21. When my daughter was first diagnosed, we did wild rice in lieu of stuffing or potatoes. I was happy with that. Nobody else was. I just get tired of all the dishes on the table. And people who want to know which is the special one? Then there is always that one person who wants to try that special food.
  22. My mom is making dinner this year. I bought her enough gluten-free prepared gravy for all. But is she doing that? No. Ther will be our gravy and theirs. I am getiing sick of other people acting like our food is weird or tainted. We can't eat her mashed potatoes because of the dairy. And they won't eat ours. Daughter told me tonight that she wanted...
  23. I'd rather not put names because the cards are for different amounts. Plus I don't know who will be there.
  24. Unless things change, if we do go there, we'll just have rice and salad. They are not near where we live. So it would have to be a special thing.
