ARCHIVED 2 Questions
Juliebove replied to Kelleybean's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There is a candy called Whizzers. I believe it's British. Like M & M's but the colors are subtle because they are vegetable dyes. Like beet. They are available online at vegan stores if you can't get them at your health food store. -
We always get the pasta. Too bad you can't get a protein with the pasta. Yes, I know there is cheese. But we have outgrown a dairy allergy so we try not to eat dairy more than twice a week. We do watch the salad though. Once we got one with a crouton in it after we asked for "no croutons". One of my parents (I forget which one now) made it worse by...

ARCHIVED Thick Fluffy Pancakes!
Juliebove replied to sunshinehs's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We can not do eggs or soy. I once bought a mix and all I had to add was orange juice. The pancakes were great! But I mail ordered the mix and haven't been able to find it since. Since then I bought a mix that has a vegan recipe. Calls for applesauce instead of the eggs and soymilk instead of milk. We don't do soy either. So I use rice milk. I also... -
ARCHIVED Simple Stew Without Processed Ingredients?
Juliebove replied to cO-ol's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you want a thick stew, you can use just a little water for the liquid. You may want to add a little extra salt and pepper and extra flavorful veggies such as onions. You wouldn't want to add too much water. And brown your beef cubes first. If cooking the stew in a pot, you can just brown the beef in a little olive oil, then add the rest of the ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Suggestions On How To Get 5 Year Old gluten-free?
Juliebove replied to HopefulMama23's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter went gluten-free at age 6. She actually wanted to do it because she was tired of feeling sick. The whole family went gluten-free. At first, because there were less gluten-free products available in the stores around me, we mainly ate things that are naturally gluten-free. Like chicken and rice, beef stew, vegetable soup. Things she was... -
ARCHIVED Flour/thickener For Dinner And Sides
Juliebove replied to zus888's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
For apple crisp I use either plain white or brown rice flour or a four flour blend. Whatever I have in the house. Used the brown rice flour last night and it came out well. Be sure to use certified gluten-free oats. For gravies and sauces I use sweet rice flour. You can buy it for less in the Asian food section. -
ARCHIVED Licorice
Juliebove replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is gluten-free licorice out there. I think Organ makes it and also Candy Tree. If it is the herb it should be gluten-free but it always could be cross contaminated. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Disappointed With Applebee's?
Juliebove replied to MindytheOrganist's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I have not eaten at Applebees in many years. Both times I hated to food. It all seems so gloppy with like...sauce and stuff. Not for me. The current menu seems the same. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Juliebove replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Toasted cheese sandwiches. Mine had tomato. Ceaser salad kit from Costco. Croutons went in the trash and were replaced with gluten-free ones. Added black olives. Also apple crisp. -
ARCHIVED Lemon Water
Juliebove replied to twe0708's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I did this when we lived in NY and lemons were cheap. It did make me feel better. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Juliebove replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I didn't cook tonight. Daughter and husband had leftover pizza. Husband had some prepared soup from Central Market. We all had salad bar. I had a few Tostitos Scoops with Queso dip. Daughter made Lidia Bastianich's Baked Apples with three sauces. Soooo good! I helped her and we failed to put the butter in the apples but they were sooo rich I don't... -
ARCHIVED The New Kitty
Juliebove replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I got my cat a water fountain. She loves it. But I also give her water in a bowl. She drinks that too. -
ARCHIVED Darn You Hormel!
Juliebove replied to Juliebove's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That would be interesting. I'll bet all the stuff they add plumps it up. -
ARCHIVED Tortilla Wraps

Teff Wraps from La Tortilla Factory. -
ARCHIVED Upcharges For gluten-free Food At Restaurants
Juliebove replied to MaryJones2's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I guess it would depend on what I am ordering. I know gluten free pasta costs more so I'll pay more. But if I am just getting a hamburger patty and a baked potato, I shouldn't have to pay more! -
ARCHIVED Staying Gluten Free At A Buffet?
Juliebove replied to kirstny's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I guess it would depend on what was on the buffet. I was watching some cooking show the other day where there was hummus on the table. People were dipping triangles of pita in the hummus. I know that's what it's for but it made me cringe. If I were you I would order my own meal. -
ARCHIVED Darn You Hormel!
Juliebove posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some years ago I bought some precooked chicken drumsticks that were gluten-free and free of our allergens. Daughter loved them! I only ever saw them once in the store. Apparently they quit making them. They were not listed on their website. Then imagine my amazement when I discovered that their chicken breasts with gravy were gluten-free and free of... -
ARCHIVED Egg Free Bread Too Dry
Juliebove replied to Chef16's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have the same problem. The only bread that comes out well is the zucchini bread listed here under the recipe section. I use ground flax instead of the eggs. -
ARCHIVED How To Convert This Recipe?
Juliebove replied to Juliebove's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks! I have seen those recipes but I think they call for egg and I can't use that. -
ARCHIVED Cooking Class - Would It Be Worth It To Take One?
Juliebove replied to buttercreamsunshine's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You should look into seeing if you could do some sort of one on one thing. My mom hired a woman who used to be a school dietician to teach me how to cook. I didn't want to do it. So she let me bring a friend. She didn't want to do it either. We wound up going twice. It didn't work for us because the woman wouldn't listen to us and wouldn't let us make... -
ARCHIVED Taco Del Mar - Regina, Sk
Juliebove replied to num1habsfan's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We have them here in WA. I believe there might be a pork here that isn't gluten-free. And the fish is breaded so that's not gluten-free. We have gotten the tacos and the bowls. They're very good. Only problem is we always get too much food. I forget that chips come with the meal and I get extra chips. We can never eat all the chips. -
I used to love a recipe similar to this. I don't think it had the celery seeds or cayenne in it though. Open Original Shared Link How would I make this gluten-free? Could I just sub a gluten-free flour mix? Would I need to add 1/2 a teaspoon of Xanthan gum? Another problem. Daughter hates green olives. She calls them puke bombs. So... Do you...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Crave Tortilla Chips?
Juliebove replied to beebee28's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Can you have chia seeds? They're high in protein. I just gel them in water and eat them as is. But you can add them to other foods such as a smoothie or yogurt. When I crave things it is because I am lacking something. Maybe you need to take vitamins?
