The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Juliebove replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Was going to do taco salads tonight. Actually daughter did have that but I did not. I had a problem on Sunday. Had ordered pizzas from Garlic Jim's. Had thought I had ordered extra red sauce on the gluten-free one but accidentally ordered Ranch sauce which I can't have because I have a severe egg allergy. Daughter liked the pizza. Ate it on Sunday... -

I wonder where they would even prepare these sandwiches? The few Subways I have been in have been small and there would be no place to isolate them from the wheat stuff. -
ARCHIVED She Keeps Sneaking :(
Juliebove replied to BeHappy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter has been doing this too. Not with gluten, that I know of. I don't keep much gluten in the house. Once in a while I'll buy bread and I usually have some pretzels. There are also some crackers. She has been sneaking dairy and eggs. She has outgrown her allergies to these things but the Dr. said she is close to the borderline for eggs so... -
Yes, I do get frustrated. Like today when I saw a new (to me anyway) frozen food that looked safe. But a scan of the ingredients showed that it contained wheat. Or when the other mothers tell me to send my daughter to Subway or McDonalds or the teriyaki place for dinner when she is at the dance studio. I wish! Would make it sooo much easier. I also...

I used to eat them with butter and maple syrup. Too many carbs for me now, but gooooood! -
I use sweet rice flour for thickening. I am not sure about the cream of chicken soup. I never used it since we can't have dairy. I would probably try to chicken some chicken broth with the sweet rice flour. Maybe add a bit of olive oil or Nucoa for mouth feel. You could probably make it out of gluten-free broth concentrate or boullion with cream and...

ARCHIVED Betty Crocker Goes Gluten-Free - PR Web (press release)
Juliebove replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thanks! Not sure it would work for me because I can't have eggs. I have the Bisquick but haven't tried it yet with the egg replacer. I think the problem here is that none of the stores seem to have stocked most of their magazines for whatever reason. I normally buy the new weekly ones on Friday although some of the stores here do not stock theirs until... -

I can not find this. Granted I only looked at one store. Is it a book? Or a magazine? If a magazine, is it the small one like the size of Prevention or Reader's Digest? Or is it a full sized one? Does it use the mixes? Thanks! -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

We had leftovers tonight. Husband had peppers with onions and sausage on a Hoagie roll (not gluten-free) and a piece of lemon chicken. Daughter had the rest of the lemon chicken and some white rice. No veg, I know but she had a platter of salad and fruit for lunch, so I didn't push it. I had a meatloaf (mine is about half meat and half veg) and some mashed... -
ARCHIVED How Gluten Friendly Is Your State?
Juliebove replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The health food store around the corner from here is owned by a celiac so they are a good place to shop for some things. Sadly they stopped carrying the Ian's chicken nuggets in favor of Applegate Farms. We do not like those at all. There is also Granola's near Central Market. Odd because Central Market itself has a large selection of gluten-free stuff... -

Juliebove replied to Rowena's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This year I only got two food items. Bulk dried beans and bulk popcorn kernels. I don't really like to buy bulk items because they are not necessarily fresh. I can get really fresh popcorn from my health food store. It pops up nicely with little to no old maids. Last year I got the popcorn and I did pop it but it wasn't as good as what I can get at the... -
ARCHIVED Finally Getting Somewhere!
Juliebove replied to Ox on the Roof's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We do eat out a lot, but... We eat at the same places. We have food allergies, not celiac. We try to find places that cook the food from scratch (for the most part anyway). We tell them of our food allergies and they cook special meals for us. Often we order side dishes that we know are safe (except perhaps for cross contamination) such as canned or... -

This came out very good! I did add a bit of Herbamare seasoning to the chicken after it was breaded because I felt like it wasn't enough seasoning. And when I make it again, I will have an extra lemon or two for topping. I had three lemons. They were small and not overly juicy. I used two of them for juicing. I had only enough slices to put one on each... -

Have you tried the jarred toddler meat sticks? They come in chicken and I think turkey. My daughter is 12 and she still eats them. They are very soft. -

This is the recipe but I haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it is good. http://www.dottysdiner.com/lemonchicken.html I will use sweet rice flour and omit the mint. -

My friend went to France for vacation and he said the restaurant meals were different than they are here. You would order your meat or main dish. But then they would bring around a trolley of vegetables. They would keep serving you until you told them to stop. He said he ate tons of vegetables there! I also had a friend in high school who was from... -

I made gluten-free coffee cake for tomorrow and I will be making a sausage casserole to go with. Everyone is on their own for lunch. Probably sandwiches. For dinner, lemon chicken, plain white rice and green beans. Candy and cookies leftover from Christmas Eve if they want dessert. -

So far we made it. I was very worried though because there were three pies and my mom kept passing plates of pie over our fudge and cookies. But nothing fell. -
I actually keep three pans on top of my stove. One is my Rachel Ray pasta pot. One is a Circulon skillet that is huge. Both are so large they are difficult to get into the cupboard. I can put them in but it's like a puzzle to do it. Everything has to go in just so. I use one or the other or both on pretty much a daily basis. The other is an old Revereware...

Last night I had a real problem. My tortilla warmer fell behind there. I used my reaching tool and was able to get out the bottom of it, but the top being flat was stuck upright against the wall. Apparently there was a small groove back there, just wide enough for it to get embedded in. With the reaching tool I could push it back and forth and it kept...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bisquick
Juliebove replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found this today at the QFC in Bothell. I bought two boxes but am skeptical because of the seemingly high sugar content. So far all of the gluten-free biscuit mixes I have tried have been overly sweet. Also because the the required amount of eggs. I can't do eggs. We'll see.
