ARCHIVED Scared About Miscarriages Due To Celiac
kbabe1968 replied to Nicole2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
As a word of encouragement....I am a Celiac and I have 3 kids. I only had 1 miscarriage (between child 2 &3). I was undiagnosed and NOT gluten free while pregnant with all of my kids. I did not find out about the Celiacs until recently. I agree...follow Gluten Free, take your vitamins and take very good care of yourself before trying to get pregnant... -
ARCHIVED Girl Scout Cookies - Samoas
kbabe1968 replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
R4J - thanks. I'll check on the caramels....Kraft is a pretty reputable co and lists allergens well, so I think the bag would say. On a side note - LOVE your name, and your signature. Hebrews 12:1 & 2 -
ARCHIVED Need A Quick Answer About Mccormick Spices
kbabe1968 replied to Gentleheart's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes....living the southwest....you need to learn the difference between ChilI powder and chilE (pronounced cheeelay) powder. Chilli is just a mixutre of spices used to make, well, chili. Chile powder is actually ground red chile peppers. (not cayenne, like red pepper is). And believe you me, you do NOT want to confuse the two! LOL!!!! If you were to... -
ARCHIVED Girl Scout Cookies - Samoas
kbabe1968 replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh yeah, I'll share the recipe! It's going to take me a while to work on it....I may not get to it for another week or two (I'm low on my grocery budget until the 15th so I won't be able to buy any new ingredients.) I can make the shortbread to test it out first. Yes.....thin mints....those I'll figure out too....but Samoas/Carmel Delights are my favorite... -
I'm not sure what they are called everywhere. Around here they're called Samoas, I think they are also called Caramel Delights. I'm trying to recreate them. My rememberance is they are shortbread with a caramel, then coconut then chocolate. Are Kraft Caramels gluten free? Or should I try to make my own caramels. My plan was to make shortbread...

kbabe1968 replied to Michi8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
UGH! I HATE that!!!! It's like why the heck did you get into that job if you're going to be such a miserable SOB while doing it? HUH??? Get a new frieacking job so that someone nice can be in your place. I would call back and say you want to talk to the doctor and that it's not of the nursed ding-dong business what it's about. I've had to do that a... -

ARCHIVED Anyone Have A French Dip Recipe?
kbabe1968 replied to Cheri A's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We had hot roast beef sammys yesterday too... I took two yellow onions and sliced them really thin. I placed them in the bottom of the crockpot. I poured over 1 qt of Pacific Beef Broth. I added salt and a bay leaf. I cooked it on high for 4 hours. THEN, I added two lbs of fresh roast beef lunch meat (my deli does it without any seasonings for me... -
Jakamo - Still navigating the flour waters myself....but....I've used white rice flour with pretty okay success with quickbread type things. I bought Gluten Free Pantry's Sandwich Bread Mix and French Bread Mix. The sandwich bread was really good. So was the french bread - i made it into rolls instead so I could make a bunch and freeze them to use...

ARCHIVED Please Help Im So Sick!
kbabe1968 replied to skinnyminny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If I'm not mistaken, there is no such thing as a "canola" plant...canola oil is made from rapeseed? Which is grown LIKE wheat, but I'm not sure if they are grown near each other. I'm sure it's really possible. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pantry Question
kbabe1968 replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for the suggestion, Lone Wolf. I have not made them yet. I'm actually waiting until tomorrow morning b/c I know that they are best when really fresh. Hoping to make mid morning. I have muffin baking cups. The extra large size. I may just use that. I was trying to figure out how to get them shaped evenly without anything to use like a... -

ARCHIVED I Need Some Help Figuring This Out
kbabe1968 replied to emcmaster's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It may sound crazy for acid reflux - but it works WONDERS for me every single time.... Take 1 tbs of apple cider vineger. Drink 8 oz of glass of water. If in an hour it's not gone, do again. DON'T repeat again for 4 hours if it doesn't work. I had HORRIBLE acid reflux during all of my pregnancies (3) and I would go thru the mega box of tums in a... -

ARCHIVED Chicken Strips
kbabe1968 replied to Confused in Iowa's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you like to do a batter - I would use rice flour instead of wheat flour as a replacement for your recipe. NOW...if you like a crunchy/non-batter coating you can crush up gluten-free Cornflkes, gluten-free Rice Crispies or Potatoe Chips. THEN...dip them in milk, egg or oil and then dip in the crushed up stuff. Fry or bake. Also, Welshire Farms (I... -
FLOP AGAIN! But this time it's not texture. It is a little dryer than normal and sunk in in the middle (not sure what THAT'S all about!). But the taste is just awful! I can't describe it. It's just foul. I cannot tell if my cocoa went rancid maybe? Or I didn't use enough sugar - I thought I used what the recipe called for.... Well, for this...
-
okay.... 2nd test is in the oven again. I used Arrowhead Mills Baking Mix. It did not have any gums or gelatins in it BUT it had a muffin recipe on the back, so I'm "assuming" that it will have a lighter texture (it's a mix of rice flour, potato starch, tapioca starch and corn flour with some other stuff). I also used a bigger pan this time too...

ARCHIVED Superbowl Party Dilemma
kbabe1968 replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hubby & I have been mulling this over. Here's the menu - Wings w/ Blue Cheese & Ranch (we're going to keep in the bottle so he's not tempted to dip). When I mentioned wings, the guy said "great" so he's okay with not dipping. Veggie Tray - we're going to leave the dips in the bottle again, so not tempted, probably use the same ones as... -
ARCHIVED Breads?
kbabe1968 replied to MGoers37's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I bought those.....had one so far. It's a little "thick". I like the texture okay, and taste wasn't bad BUT it was so big! LOL! Have you ever tried to slice it into say 4 slices and use it that way, kind of like a mini loaf of bread? Will it work or will the two extra slices go bad being removed from the freezer? I know the bag recommends using 1 at... -
ARCHIVED Superbowl Party Dilemma
kbabe1968 replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Well, he can't have eggs either (his reaction was to an omlet who had all those things in it - should have mentioned that). So, I also cannot use eggs in ANYTHING I cook. The more I think about it, the more I'm liking the pot roast idea, if I can find a gluten free beef broth to use. Or maybe stew. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Gosh my brain just will not... -
ARCHIVED A Few Questions For My Cookbook
kbabe1968 replied to lorka150's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Honestly, I love recipe books that come with a picture of each! I know you don't HAVE to do it. And I' bet it costs more. BUT, I love knowing what I made turned out right! DEF Slowcooker recipes I would buy a book that would have a forward or epilogue that explained specific unique ingredients and how they work in a recipe so a person could...
