  1. Okay. I LOVE mexican food. I love Ortega Taco Sauce. I went to B&G foods, and their Ortega products ARE NOT listed in their gluten-free list (cheering for them for even having one!). BOOO HOOO!!! My two faves are the Mild and the Chipotle ones....any suggestions for replacements?
  2. Were you at the bar? Did you watch them make it? I would say it's possible that something was on the board, or on their fingers, OR like said before, it was the soy sauce. My hubby's sad that I'm not brave enough to go for sushi since being dx'd.
  3. zanzu! I know WAHHHH!!! Our TJ's in Phx used to sell wines and alchohol! I loved shopping there! We're going to hit TJ's next week (i have a friend who has a daughter with severe milk and dairy allergy - so we're going to go together). I'm going to look for their waffles now. I LOVE the Van's ones and have no problems with them (Apple Cinnamon are...
  4. Hi there. I can feel the pain in your voice! As a mom of three, I know how much it must be hurting you to see your child suffer, and feeling powerless to stop it. Another suggestions (I'm not going to repeat all the great ones you've gotten so far): Do you have a super Walmart near you? The kind with the grocery store? Walmart matches advertised...
  5. YES!!!! Happening to me too!!!! I don't always know the source of glutening, but I do feel okay at first, then REALLY tired, really down. But after I really clear it out of my system I feel GREAT...could do anything....without even napping.
  6. Be careful of Low fat or Fat Free ones....they contain HVP's which are no nos (Hydrolized Vegetable Protiens). My understanding is the trans fats law is that it can still contain it, but it must be labelled clearly. I believe a lot of companies are changing formulas to not use hydrogenated or hydrolized protiens, but not all of them! I like Skippy...
  7. Can you use rice flour as a thickener or would it be better to use corn starch. I'm actually trying to make a whitesauce as a base for a cheese sauce. I'm always leary of corn starch breaking down if it gets overcooked. What would you suggest?
  8. I'm going to check that list again. I did just skim it and it was something I was looking for, but I did not study it like I should!
  9. I'll try that. I made Banana Bread yesterday, it turned out good - hubby even said it was better than it used to be when it was wheat flour. BUT, I didn't like it as much. And I love BB. I'll try this version! THANKS!
  10. I DID TOO!!! LOL How funny! I thought for sure it wasn't going to be in there. I bet a bunch of people are going to get tested for it. I swear, had I not known about it before - that article would have caused me to look. I'm so glad they mentioned it!
  11. So do you just put the little smokies in the sauce and warm them that way? Has anyone ever soaked their meatballs in chili sauce & grape jelly mixture? A friend of mine gave me that recipe many years ago - it's really good. I'd love to make them, but I can't seem to find a chili sauce that would be safe...or is the Heinz one okay? ( they mailed me...
  12. I don't think we're having one this year, but if we were I would serve: Chicken Enchilladas (corn tortillas, not flour) Tortilla Soup Chips/Salsa Mexican Salad (shredded romaine, tomatoes, corn and red onions in a balsamic vinegar dressing) Dessert would be some sort of brownies or cookies or Apple cobbler Or all 3. These are things I'd make BEFORE...
  13. Echoing that - we live about 20 mins away from Jules. It was great. I did take out so didn't get the gluten free treats! I'll have to dine in next time!
  14. Thanks Jayhawk mom... The biggest hurdle I can think we'll face with that will be when he's not here. We homeschool, so sending to school is not an issue, thankfully. But when he's at my parents, I know that he would be unintentionally glutened. I'm thinking if I get the tests AND they do come back positive instead of inconclusive that I could have...
  15. guess I've just been lucky. Yes, nutitionally, I'm not thrilled with white rice flour. And once I get thru all the white rice flour, I'm going to retry all the recipes with the brown rice (because it would be a "little" better nutrition wise). And although you bring up a point about the nutritional value....I have found when making treats - the...
  16. YES! I eat them every morning. I do not react with them. I LOVE them. I use them like bread. I make pb & J waffle every morning. (well, half, I can only eat one waffle, I find them very filling). They are a little dry. I usually under toast just a touch and get them as soon as they're done. It is possible it's a CC issue. I haven't seemed...
  17. Thanks. Well, I went glutenfree in January under the suspicion that I had celiac. Blood tests on me were inconclusive. I didn't feel like shelling out the bucks for the upper gi, so I decided to go gluten free and see how I felt. I'm starting to climb out of a 12 year fog I've lived under. And anytime I even smell gluten, I get sick to my stomach....
  18. My son is a great kid, don't get me wrong. But lately I've noticed that he really doesn't listen (even when he looks you in the eye), he's very fidgety, very sensitive and touchy. Gets grumpy easy, and has wild mood swings. I'm thinking it's Celiac - he seems very ADHD, but don't think it's possible. I'm trying to figure out how to approach my doc...
  19. For me personally (very new at this - only 3 weeks) I'm finding that in quick bread/sweet breads are working just fine with just a substitution of white rice flour. I'm about to start mixing with brown rice flour just to see if it resembles more of a whole wheat consistency. I've made pancakes, brownies, cinnamon swirl bread and apple cobbler with...
  20. Our Whole Foods is great too. I haven't tried it yet, but there are signs everywhere that they will give you a sample of something if you ask. Like right under the Pamela's cookies there's a sign that says "Afraid to buy? Why not try? Ask an associate to help you". I think my next trip, I'll be brave enough to ask!
  21. My friend made the Cherrybrook Farms? one for her daughter's birthday. She made it as cupcakes, but I think you can bake it as cake too. She got the frosting too. It was REALLy good. We couldn't tell the difference at all. I just had Gluten Free Pantry's chocolate truffle brownies for the first time last night and they were AWESOME, totally shocked...
  22. Boy. It's hard, I'm right there with ya. It's only been 18 days for me and the thoughts f never having some of my favorite foods again is daunting. Sad, really. Never again will my lips pass over a piece of Mack N Manco's pizza from the OC boardwalk. Never will I have funnel cake from a street vender again. A hot dog on a soft, squishy white bun. ...
  23. I have to feed a family of 5 on the same budget as pre gluten free. I'm the only one who HAS to be gluten free but since I am the main purchaser and chef in the house - they all need to sort of follow suit (2 exceptions are crackers and bread - I will by them a loaf of gluten bread and 1 box of glutened crackers). Well, really the only food choices...
  24. I'm sure this is mentioned already - but my first two attempts at eating out (and both times I was glutened), the response to "Do you have a gluten free menu" was a puzzled look followed by the question "What is gluten?". SO....I think first and foremost would be wanting to know that not only the chefs but the hostess and wait staff knows what Celiac and...
  25. I've made the almond milk before. It's SO good when it's homemade...it doesn't have that processed flavor to it. I think my recipe is a little different.... I've made it where you soak the raw almonds in water (enogh to cover) for 3 hours - changing the water each hour. (this is 1 cup almonds) Then mix with 2 cups filtered water in a blender...
