  1. I think with the increase in processed food, the amount of gluten consumed has also probably gone up. The average diet has also gotten worse, which may make it harder for bodies to cope with something that is hard to digest. Add to that, you have the gluten content of wheat being deliberately and substantially increased in the last 200 years. My theory...
  2. You can set your preferences to get emails with responses to threads you've started or subscribed to. That is the easiest way to find out. Just go to "my controls" and look under options & email. If you want to see new posts generally, hit "view new posts."
  3. I don't have any answers. I went to a fancy catered party last night and it was horrid. I won't go into everything, but ... Nothing I could eat. I figured that and had eaten before hand. You would think there could be something simple like veggie crudites, a fruit salad, chips, nuts ... nope. Everything was meat, cheese, & gluten, sometimes...
  4. What tea was it? Some flavored teas contain gluten.
  5. The "flavor" could have gluten. Do you respond to sugar alcohols like sorbitol? I get very bloated if I have any. Of course, you may be responding to something you ate/came into contact with any time within the last 2 or 3 days, unless you are always a quick responder to gluten.
  6. Thanks, Amber. I'm sure I'll get to the point of seeking specific restaurant recommendations, as well as what not to miss in our free time. Of course, if you, or anyone else, wants to mention something now, that's fine. I've bookmarked this thread. Now we were just trying to decide if this was a doable trip and it definitely sounds like it is...
  7. What FAAN says is: "Studies show that most soy-allergic individuals may safely eat soybean oil (not cold pressed, expeller pressed, or extruded oil)." I don't know how that translates into "most types of soybean oil." Not that Cracker Barrel shares what type of soybean oil it uses I know I have reacted to soybean oil at restaurants before. I've...
  8. I am inclined to think it is your mind playing tricks on you, unless there is some way there could be flour in the air or CC in what you were eating or drinking. I don't know for sure, though. I'll tell a story on myself. A recent Economist magazine had a cover that was simply a piece of toast, looking like a bite had been taken from the corner. There...
  9. Ezme, It sounds like you are doing Dr. Fuhrman's Food for Life diet. Are you familiar with that? I haven't read his book, so I can't say for sure. But from what I know of it, it sounds like it. If you haven't read his book or checked out his web site, you may want to. Another guy to check out is Dr. Harris. I have added a bit more fat than...
  10. Are you only interested in the sort of diets you include in your thread title? I've followed the McDougall diet since mid-2000 but it is quite different than the diets you list. I plan on staying on it for the rest of my life. I lost weight, reached my goal, and have maintained it. (I'm at a 18.6 BMI.) There is no counting of calories or grams of anything...
  11. First of all, make sure you aren't getting gluten. You do check out any medicines, supplements, personal care items, etc., right? You also read the ingredients of everything you eat and check out any possible sources of hidden gluten (celiac.com has a list)? I ask the latter question because you say that you have been trying to avoid dairy, but you may...
  12. Yeah, I ordered a salad without croutons at one restaurant and I think they made a regular salad, then picked the croutons out. Anyway, I found myself chomping down on a small piece of a crouton I hadn't seen. I should have spit the entire mouthful out (as gross as that would have been) but I was with my inlaws at a nice restaurant and I was pretty new...
  13. Here is a list of gluten-free beverages: Open Original Shared Link As you can see, some flavored coffees have gluten; some do not. Of course, it does well to doublecheck with the company because there can be new flavors or changed ingredients.
  14. Sometimes folks who have problems with soy can handle soy oil. Many can handle soy lecithin. But there are those who can't handle soy in any form. Other than by trial I don't know how you would tell.
  15. I wonder if this would work with egg replacer?
  16. About my recipe sub need ... The only one I know of is Galaxy and it comes in slices, not particularly gooey or moist to help stick other ingredients together. The goat cheese worked because of its moisture content, etc. (I used a soft one). I suppose I could try blending rice cheese in with the corn, but I don't know if that would work. I've...
  17. I just posted this yesterday on another thread about USDA jurisdiction (important because the allergen labeling reg's currently only apply to FDA food): Meat, poultry and egg products. Technically, something could have just a little meat in it and that would be USDA jurisdiction, not FDA. How the jurisdiction is divided up in practice is rather confusing...

    ARCHIVED Frustrated

I've had great success with the P90X program from Beachbody. Once I finished those 90 days, my strength, aerobic endurance and flexibility were all markedly better. I also added muscle. (For instance, one and a half inches to my biceps -- not bad for a menopausal woman!) If that is a bit much to start out with (there are tests to see if one is ready...
  19. I used to have sinus infections several times a year. I gave up dairy seven and a half years ago and never had another one. If you are still having dairy, this is a step you could take. You can google and read about the link between dairy and sinus problems. It is well documented. I continued to have sinus headaches, though. Off the gluten and they...
  20. I've read that goat's milk can vary in amount of cowlike casein (can't remember the right name -- you all know what I mean) it contains, from none to a significant amount. I discovered this after finding that the goat's cheese I ate in Europe (or from Europe after I came home) didn't bother me, but US goat's cheese did. I don't know if this is accidental...
  21. Meat, poultry and egg products. Technically, something could have just a little meat in it and that would be USDA jurisdiction, not FDA. How the jurisdiction is divided up in practice is rather confusing. Researching yesterday, I found a public hearing for a rulemaking where the agencies were trying to rationalize things. From what I could tell, no action...
  22. I just read this morning a post on another board by a dietician who did some research. Maltodextrin from wheat need not be disclosed in the US if it is a food not covered by the FDA labeling law, that is, food that is regulated instead by the USDA. Still I don't know if this is a big problem. (Not that I eat anything regulated by the USDA, I don...
  23. Were you eating gluten up to the time of your tests? If not, that could cause false negatives. You also could be reacting but the damage hasn't worked itself up to the level of giving you a positive result. (See Open Original Shared Link How do you react if you have barley or rye? I guess that is a simple way of finding out if it is wheat or gluten...
  24. I do wonder about her followup testing. Did it follow years of being gluten-free? If so, of course tests for celiac would be negative. The antibodies go away and the villi damage reverses. I guess I would ask her how much gluten she was consuming and for how long before she had this followup testing. I would hate to think that she hadn't had enough...
  25. Gluten sensitivity just means that the celiac damage hasn't taken place yet (it takes time), the test for celiac yielded a false negative (which happens a lot), or that gluten is damaging one's body (but in a different way than seen with celiac with its villi damage). It is every bit as serious as celiac and has the same need for 100% adherence to...
