  1. What I found very helpful this year was to meet the teacher and give a brief summary type of letter. Open house night is very chaotic at our school. Then find out when you can schedule a meeting BEFORE school starts. Be childless for the meeting if at all possible. Bring all of the info you will need to the meeting. Bring books about celiacs for them to review...
  2. Personally, I would look into a 504 plan. decide if and how you want to implement the 504 plan. Is your child medically diagnosed Celiac? Can letter from Dr help? Talk to the district head of nursing. She will be your best source for making sure the school is meeting your childs needs. Talk to the Principal too. Your childs "allergy" falls under the nurses...
  3. Hi, I have a 2yr old that has been on a gluten free challenge for about 3 weeks. I can see a difference in her. So I think she probably has this celiac disease. My question is she ranges from barely hungry to bottomless starvation. Some days she will eat 3 pancakes for breakfast. The same day she eats all her lunch and then eats a huge dinner portion...
  4. Hi, I use tablets for myself, but I use Nature's Plus Liquid Bone Power and NatureBio Children's Multivitamin for my two year old. These are both gluten-free and CF. The mutlivitamin looks like liquid carrots, but the kids don't mind it.
  5. After years of traditional drs just not figuring out my health problems or brushing me off with the standard "It's female problems!" etc. I now look heavily to alternative Drs. Go to traditional Drs for certain critical issues like cancers etc, but the alternative holistic drs are the ones who know how to make your body work together and work properly. Get...
  6. I agree. Go to the party. Order some drinks and have a great time. Bring some cookies or brownies or soemthing in your bag. Eat a meal before you go. If anyone asks, just explain that you have severe food allergies so you can't eat here, but you wanted to come celebrate. Smile and have a great time. As for the annorexia comment, ehh make a joke out of...
  7. Something about Snapple tea makes me sick every time. And I love their tea!
  8. The way I see it is that traditional Drs have told me they do not know what else to do about the ear infections. The gastro yells at me. I've stopped going. The holistic Drs have worked wonders for me in the past and I have been to a meet the Dr session to see first hand what he does. I love it. So in a few weeks the youngest will go and hopefully be on to...
  9. Hi, thanks for all the great ideas everyone. The daycare has been midly receptive to the allergies. At least it is not a NO WAY answer. I'll be in providing a brief education for the next few weeks. The elementary school will be another issue. Jodele, Any chance you can send those attachments? I couldn't get them to open. Taylor, Thanks for the perspective...
  10. It's sad when a gluten raction brings happiness to Mom! My 2 yr old has been sick, not growing, constant ear infections, rashes, etc. She was tested for Celiacs, but results were inconclusive. She went dairy free nad had improvements, but still has problems. So I finally broke down and made her gluten-free. Many people kept suggesting it. Well, she's been...
  11. I also have the mood reaction and it kills me. I notice it as I am being a bear to everyone around me. In general, if I start having a reaction that I can feel - like skin, tummy, dizzy, nausea I take a benedryl and try to lay down. I know this is not an allergic reaction in the true sense, but for me it helps. I also take some Motrin, helps with the inflammation...
  12. Hi Kim, Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time getting a diagnosis. Sounds like you have determined the problem to be gluten, so stick around here. The label of Celiacs vs gluten sensitive or intolerant shouldn't matter to anyone but a doctor, IMO. The fact is gluten causes you problems. I have a positive biopsy diagnosis that took years of me...
  13. Hi, I have celiacs -biopsy diagnosed. My 2 yr old has been struggling for a while. She was biopsied and results were inconclusive but the dr had us take her off all dairy. That made the rash go away initially. for her it seems this insanely itchy rach is related to allergies. When she accidentally gets dairy, the rash and diarrhea appear. well, after not...
  14. Sorry you are going through all of this. IMO, go find a marriage councelor. Go to two or three beofre you both find one you like and get a "marriage adjustment". You have some major change that also affect his life. But I can tell you, if he is unsupportive now-deal with it now. If you are miserable now-deal with it now. You will both be happier in the end...
  15. Sorry your inlaws are being so difficult. They will eventually learn how to nehave around gluten, but it may take a while. Good luck. Gotta love the bright child dumb grandparent game...My oldest, 6yrs old, manipulates and tells bold faced lies in order to avoid eatign fod she doesn't want or to get the grandparents to buy something she does want. Of...
  16. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions! Does anyone find sending in a book or video about the allergies or Celiacs to be helpful. I am thinking about sending in some books this year-provided I find some good ones. The 1st grader has the nut allergy. The 2 yr old has dairy, shellfish, and now it looks like we can add gluten to her list.
  17. I have to say we tried the blood tests and then the biopsy. After that my 2 yr old became Dairy free then she had a reaction to shellfish. Big argument with the Gastro abou the fact I put her on gluten-free diet. well almost 6 mths later and the dairy free diet only helped so much. She has been gluten-free now for almost 3 weeks and already seems to be doing...
  18. Hi Angel42, I got pregnant with my first child as the celiacs started up. Three years after her birth I finally got a diagnosis of Celiacs. Her pregnancy was cake walk. Losingthe baby weight - a sinch! Within a month I was fitting into my "big" clothes. By the time she was 4 mths old I was below my pre-prego weight. Turns out I was starving and malnurished...
  19. What a terrible bday lunch! Sounds like something went wrong at the restaurant food handling! I doubt I would be back for a long time either.
  20. With the school year about to begin many of us with newly diagnosed kids in preschools, daycares, and elementary school are looking for some advice. I assume it gets easier with older kids? Maybe? I was hoping that some of the other members who have already delt with the schools can pass along some of their lessons learned. I am hopeful that together we can...
  21. I've already been informed that the teacher for this coming school year (two weeks away) knows about the Nut allergy in her class and is VERY nervous and concerned. Great! The school nurse and the Clinic aid are both new - that could be good news. They basically have one chance left and then the 504 firestorm will start. For the number of epi-pens in...
  22. The insanely angry mood swings are usually my first clue that I have been mildly glutened. It's in the middle of screaming that I realize normally I wouldn't be like this, must be something I ate. Then I just want to crawl into a hole for a few weeks until I feel better. The moods are the worst part of this diet.
  23. I get the "pink eye" thing from allergic reactions and who knows why. It's just one of those things I've always had. Nice scary bright red eyes that have goo and itch and swell. Painful and miserable. The Natural Tears help me. Anymore I just call in for a prescription for pink eye meds when it does not go away or feels different. The one anaphylactic reaction...
  24. Everything I have ever read about a 504 makes it sound wonderful and perfect for children like ours - celiacs and or food allergies. However, my childs elementary school nurse and district head of nursing are adamanetly against "labeling" my child a 504. Even my pediatrician, who I like, recomended working it out passivley first. My child has an anaphylactic...
  25. Hi, My 2 yr old has just gone gluten-free. Already seeing small changes. She will be attending daycare soon. Does anyone have a list of gluten-free craft supplies they could share? Glue, crayons, play dough like substance, etc. Are there any pieces of advice about what areas to watch out for in daycare? Generally the teachers have been very...
