  1. Coppertone and Banana Boat SUNBLOCKS are gluten free. The tanning lotions may have gluten. I called Banana Boat yesterday and Coppertone was on the Clan Thompson software. Hope this helps.
  2. Wow. I'm glad you are finding answers for your son. I've never heard of an oat allergy before. A small part of me wonders if my son is really has celiac disease because he did not have a biopsy. He too had all the symptoms, but he had positive blood work (tTG) and a great response to the gluten-free diet. Did your son have his tTG or EMA checked initially...
  3. Thank you for the replies. I'll make the cookies this weekend and give them a try.
  4. 1) Try to make a shopping list using my many incomplete lists of gluten free foods, trust-worthy brands or buy specialty food. 2) Read label & watch for terms like modified food starch, flavoring, ect. 3) Try to decode the manufacturer (and hope that it's Kraft ). Before I started looking for the brand names I did not realize that most...
  5. Ok, I'm still relatively new to the Celiac diet. When my son began this diet he could not have wheat, barley, rye, or oats. Then I read that it is not the actual oats that cause people with celiac disease problems, instead it is the nearly inevitable cross contamination. I have seen certified gluten free oats put out by a few companies. They have been...
  6. In a book that I read there were some interesting cons about medical bracelets that made me think twice about it. If there is an actual life or death emergency do you want the EMT wasting precious time trying to figure out what gluten is and if the medications that they need to give your child to save his or her life contain gluten. Unless my child has...
  7. There is an Asian specialty store near my home that sells rice flour and tapioca starch for much cheaper than I can get at Bob's Red Mill. I am worried about cross-contamination since the flour is not made by a specialty company. Has anyone had any experiences with the flours at ethnic stores? Thanks.
  8. Yep. Anything with malt flavoring is off limits, which pretty much eliminates most cereals. Fruity and cocoa pebbles, Dora stars and various specialty cereals are gluten free.
  9. I thought my 3.5 year old son had energy before...WOW was I wrong!!! Since diagnosis he has tons of energy. He doesn't want to go to bed as early and many times he has so much energy that he literally runs throughout the house and jumps up and down! It is so nice to see such a positive change in him.
  10. I know...I was disappointed too. They have the same texture as regular corn tortillas but they taste a little better.
  11. I am pursuing a Master of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology degree. My boyfriend (8+ years together) works with commercial satellite systems--for the most part. We have one son who is nearly 4 years old. He is the only one to be diagnosed so far. We enjoy doing various outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, and mushroom hunting.
  12. My son really likes it. He likes the chocolate covered ice cream bars the best. Avoid Soy Dream, in my opinion (and his) it is pretty gross.
  13. The Hawthorn Fish House is also gluten free. There is a rather large list of gluten free restaurants if you go to the Portland Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) website! There's also a bakery in Sellwood, you can probably find it by doing a google search.
  14. Lister, The gall bladder in important because it makes bile that breaks up fats/oils into tiny droplets in your intestine. This gives the fat enzymes (lipase) more surface area to act on. Without a gallbladder/bile you would not be able to absorb fat--or fat soluble vitamins efficiently. Gall stones are mainly cholesterol, so I would advise you to lower...
  15. Maybe because there was no xanthan gum or baking powder?
  16. Too bad they have not about little ones with celiac disease kissing our faces! How frustrating! I guess I too will stick with Dove.
  17. My son's tummy looked like he was pregnant, and was very round and firm. It's hard to tell because breast fed babies are usually so chunky! If I were you I would go off gluten yourself completely. There was a post about gluten possibly being able to enter a mother's breast milk! I would also avoid gluten foods for your son as well. If he does not improve...
  18. Thanks for the post. I didn't even know that the FDA made a decision. Mission also makes super size white corn tortillas. They say that they are gluten free.
  19. I really feel for you. It is so hard when you can't sleep well. My son was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease at 3.5 years old. He was a horrible sleeper!!! For the first two years of his life he woke up every two hours to nurse/drink. (He was breastfed for 9 months.) At least 2-3 times per week he would wake up at about 1 am and stay awake for...
  20. I agree that it is likely a circulation issue. Muscle twitches function to assist venous blood in its return to the heart. I don't really know anything about RLS so I'm unable to comment on that possibility.
  21. Some dried fruits are covered with various flours. I think that Dole dried fruits are safe, but you may want to call and double check.
  22. Enterolab tests for food insensitivities using fecal samples and they also do genetic testing. This institution is ran by Dr. Fine, a gastroenterologist, but he has yet to publish so many doctors do not take the results seriously. They claim that their tests are more sensitive than blood tests and can be done even after the gluten free diet has been started...
  23. You don't need the commercial grade, but I would get one with higher watts. We have the Kitchen Aid Artisan (350 watts) and it works great.
  24. They were advertised in yesterday's Safeway ad.
  25. Jack Daniel's Teriyaki marinade is gluten free.
