I agree, your doc. is being outrageous. While its true 30%of Nordics have the potential to get celiac , so do Italians. And overall 10% of people of European descent have the gene potential for celiac. For myself I have hazel eyes and got celiac at age 4 months when I "failed to thrive"... My docs were in denial at age 4 on (since by then I could grow while...

ARCHIVED Detox/cleanse Making Symptoms Worse?
YoloGx replied to noboss4me's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Its probably both. On a certain level your liver is being stimulated to release more toxins more effectively. The detox herbs and supplements are helping you get rid of the toxins. However the barley etc. is stressing and possibly killing off your villi so more undigested proteins are circulating in your body for your liver then to have to cleanse. You are... -
ARCHIVED Detox/cleanse Making Symptoms Worse?
YoloGx replied to noboss4me's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have and believe me it isn't fun. Yes, it is enough gluten in those pills etc. to cause a severe problem--at least it was for me. At least you know what is going on. It took me quite a while to figure out what was what. I was told I was simply "too sensitive"!! Ditto with homeopathics etc. that have alcohol as a base... Avoid any herbs that stimulate... -

Apart from herbal suggestions to help heal your intestines and liver from undigested food proteins (marshmallow root, yellow dock and dandelion root) I suggest taking a teaspoon or two of baking soda in a glass of water and then chase with another glass of water. It works miracles! I also suggest taking bromelain/papain caps with your meals to help digest... -
Just make sure it doesn't stimulate your immune system. If you have celiac, its already overstimulated. A friend of mine who also has celiac and borderline thyroid problems has found 1/2 hour of vigorous exercise each day really helps. There is also a Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome website you should also check out. Seems you can also take some herbal supplements...

Increased hair loss at first happens a lot. However this will pass as you heal. It helps to take extra minerals, esp. calcium and magnesium and zinc as well as liquid trace minerals. I take E-zorb since I still don't absorb regular calcium very well even though I have been on diet for a while. I used to think hair loss was normal, but now my hair is in...

ARCHIVED Ladies, What Facial Wash And Moisturizer Do You Use

Amazing! What is the brand? I'll check out the Ecover brand of shampoo too. By the way, I tend to stay away from anything that says it has tocopherols in it (due to most vit. E being made from wheat germ) unless they say it is tocopherol acetate. Has anyone else here had trouble with that? Bea -
That's what I am saying. Whereas she is basically very strong her life wasn't what it would have been if she had avoided the gluten. I am convinced it made her dysfunctional emotionally as well as short term memory etc. etc. It had disastrous effects on her family for her to not be emotionally available and instead be depressed and ratty. I notice now the...

My mother went off diet as a young adult after being diagnosed when she was four. She thought she had no more symptoms and had "outgrown sprue"--what they used to call celiac. However it did mess with her short term memory and made her more subject to getting the flu. It gave her low thyroid (though just on the edge so finally her docs stopped treating her...

I like to use Desert Essence coconut or lavender Hand and Body Lotion. I use their Jojoba Oil around my eyes or if my face is really dry at night. Earlier on I will put it on and wipe off the excess if I am going out. Its also great for one's lips or for really dry skin anywhere. Sometimes I use Lily of the Desert's Aloe Vera Gelly. Its supposed to be good... -
ARCHIVED Is It Cheating If You've Already Been Glutened?
YoloGx replied to Silliest of Yaks's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's a good question. My belief however is that you have more lattitude and don't have to avoid CC so much for instance and could possibly cheat once in a blue moon and be OK since for you its not an auto immune problem. However, there is also the question of whether or not you truly have celiac or not since tests aren't always accurate. If perchance you... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Starbucks?
YoloGx replied to leadmeastray88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here's the old post I just found. It seems CC at Starbucks can be avoided, but you have to ask them to clean the pitchers more thoroughly. By the way, how is it that the Caramel coloring is safe? I was reacting to soap with it in it. Bea PS--here's the old post--I think it was just from this summer: "I'm a former District Manage for Starbucks &... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Starbucks?
YoloGx replied to leadmeastray88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I heard elsewhere that one can get CC at Starbucks. Due to making some things that have gluten in them and not cleaning it all out. ?? Was it here? Might be worth investigating. Bea -
ARCHIVED Is It Cheating If You've Already Been Glutened?
YoloGx replied to Silliest of Yaks's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are right, there are several good reasons to stick with your diet. It is not only likely if you go off of your diet not only will you overall feel worse (achy body, easily get ill, possible D or C more frequently etc.) -- but then you can also greatly increase your chances of getting cancer, cataracts, dementia, nerve problems and other degenerative... -
GM corn is not allowed to be planted here although some has snuck in undetected, later revealed. So there is really not a cross-contamination issue yet. There are however a lot of GM field trials of various crops under way at the Ag colleges (they must be terminated before the plants flower.) A neighbour thought she was doing me a favour by bringing...

That makes sense! I'll try those corn chips sometime though chips in general are things I avoid these days for the most part. As far as the gluten-free cornmeal/flour I usually use the blue corn. Its more ancient when you stop and think about it. Less likely to be genetically altered perhaps? By the way, how can you tell where the cornmeal/flour...

Corn is one of the common allergens. Part of this may be that it often has mold in it due to the high sugar content. However of that I don't really know for certain. I am able to tolerate it better than I used to I think mainly because I almost never have it regularly, i.e., every day or even every week. I also make sure now that its labeled gluten free which...

ARCHIVED Could I Be Feeling Symptoms 3 Days After Eating Gluten?
YoloGx replied to i-miss-cookie-dough's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had it take that long. Usually now its 24 hours or 48. But sometimes 3 days. You know from the symptoms it couldn't be anything else...So sorry to hear you are going through this. I have found taking some of those gluten digesting enzymes at or near the time you have the gluten helps. After the fact, I have found having a couple of repeated doses of... -
ARCHIVED "why Aren't You Eating" Getting Frustrating
YoloGx replied to HAK1031's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree--never believe anybody unless they too have celiac and are really on it (some aren't and cheat regularly). Always bring along some emergency food just in case... People will see you eating. They may or may not notice but it will make them more comfortable than if you eat nothing at all at such an event... I tend to bring something others will like... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free, Df, And Everything Else-f..ruining My Life
YoloGx replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Rachel, I really love what you said. Its so entirely true some of us are more restricted in our diets and thus travel less than others -- or not at all. However the important thing is to have a positive attitude nevertheless rather than a 'poor me'. Of course 'poor me' happens to all of us from time to time anyway given the at times very frustrating circumstances... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free, Df, And Everything Else-f..ruining My Life
YoloGx replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I sympathize-- it is hard to socialize with this condition and it is very easy to come off as being neurotic to the uninformed. It can be at times maddening. I have had a hard time with some members of my family for instance even though most of them also have this condition and should know better. You just have to develop a tough skin and either take your... -

Well I do hope at least some of it helps. It really should. Just hope it didn't overwhelm. I know it was a lot at once. So, just in case you haven't had enough advice (lol!), an Internet site that might be helpful is the Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome site. Oftentimes one isn't able to adequately convert T3 from the T4 medicine they give you, which is especially... -
ARCHIVED Weird Snsations And Body Aches.....
YoloGx replied to GlutenGuy36's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is not unusual to have all kinds of body aches and pains with celiac. I certainly had them most of my life. I used to think that it was "normal" to hurt all over my body. The last of these pains finally went away last November when I went off all trace glutens even though I thought I was off gluten for over 12 years previous to that. Now it only comes...
