  1. Benn there! Finding fast food I could count on was a major step for me to feel like people again. Especially when I found I could have Taco Cabana's Chicken Flamente! Just to be safe -- always check, but generally speaking, tamales are safe too (at least in Texas). Flour would screw up the texture of the masa and anyone that I've ever asked about...
  2. Kudos to your wife! I've only been in Central Market one time but I couldn't find hardly any gluten-free stuff. Do you know where she found it?
  3. Jalapeno bagels were my weakness (okay, one of them) but I've been able to scratch that itch with jalapeno chebe bread.
  4. I take B-12 Blast from Bricker Labs that I get at Whole Foods. Open Original Shared Link It used to say gluten-free on the bottle and I noticed it doesn't now so I emailed them before listing it here. The response I received says: Our B-12 Blast product is absolutely gluten free and is manufactured with only top ingredients and food based vitamins....
  5. Okay, I'm on my home computer and I have a list as of 1/9/07 from Taco Cabana: TACO CABANA
  6. Hmmm... I haven't been there for a couple of months. I just checked my McDonalds list and yep, that's what it shows. I'm sensitive enough that giving my hubby a peck after he's had gluten can give me trouble but McD's grilled chicken hasn't bothered me in the past. I wonder when that changed? So now, the only meat I can get from McD's is the beef patty...
  7. If you go to their website and ask them, they'll send you a list of their gluten-free items. The list I have on my work computer is old but I don't think it's changed much. As of 11/08/05, their gluten-free stuff was: TACO CABANA
  8. Agreed! Some docs are not up to date on Celiac but the knowledge that it is hereditary is not new news. Either he's not living in this century or the last one or else he's just not paying attention. In either case, I wouldn't want to count on him for my health care.
  9. I actually have really good success at Taco Cabana. I've only had a problem twice in 3 years and I eat there at least 2-3 times a week. Once was when I got refried beans which s/b gluten-free but I know they are spreading them on flour tortillas all day. Now I order boracho beans. The other time was when I ordered enchiladas without gravy, which s/b gluten...
  10. It's not silly at all if you have the freezer space, the time to make the buns, and you aren't trying to watch your weight. Hubby and I have to watch our weight and we don't have kids. The biggest adjustments I've had to make with Celiac is the first advice I received -- get a freezer to store all the gluten-free stuff in. I don't have the space for a...
  11. Quite true. The trick I didn't know at first is that you only need to warm it 10-15 seconds. It doesn't take as much as regular bread would. I usually try to warm it with a damp paper towel around it to soften further.
  12. I did see a suggestion on the Wilton's site that for black frosting, start with chocolate so you don't need as much coloring to turn it black. I was wondering if licorice strings are gluten-free because it seems like they'd be great for drawing out details on the firetruck. Are you using yellow gumdrops for the headlights?
  13. I have seen red petite fours at Christmas, so I know it's doable. But I don't know how to do it. I wondered if you could use red cookie sugar sprinkled on and gently pressed into white (or pink) icing. I know the colored sugar holds it's color when I bake with it at Christmas time. I can look in some cookbooks when I get home. If you find the Wilton...
  14. Sorry 'bout that. I think Amazon had some extra tracking in there. Try this: Open Original Shared Link .com/Minute-Hamburger-Bun...r/dp/B000H0NKMI It's the Minute Hamburger Bun Mix Starter Kit by Fast & Fresh and they send you a kit with a mold for the top and bottom of a bun. You mix it up one bun at a time, microwave it and then pop it in the...
  15. If by scratch, you mean made fresh, I'm using the following for my buns now: Open Original Shared Link .com/Minute-Hamburger-Bun...mp;pf_rd_i=home I used to make them using GFP Favorite Sandwich Bread Mix or the French Bread Mix, but it's nice to only make one bun, fresh each time, instead of a dozen and freezing 11.
  16. I get the turmeric in capsules at Whole Foods. I do eat curries and use mustard, but it's not enough to make a difference and it's not everyday. The capsules make it much easier. Also, my Mom found that Capsaicin (sp?) helped her joint pain. Sometimes one thing will help and not another so it's good to have several things to try. I wanted to get...
  17. Sounds like you need something to hold it together. xanthan gum would be my first guess but I've heard of people using ground flax seed, extra eggs, powdered milk or cheese. I made some strawberry muffins for my Mom on Mother's day from Pamela's pancake and baking mix and they were quite a hit (pretty too).
  18. I thought docs accepted the blood tests now in lieu of the biopsy now. My Mom's doc did for her, although that could be because I had already been diagnosed via biopsy. But after 3 blood tests, I'd consider that pretty solid. It sounds like your kid may like smooth-mild-creamy flavors. Have you tried him on the AltoPlano Gold instant quinoa hot cereal...

    ARCHIVED Melt Down

My creative hubby came up with a quick solution for the pizza craving the other day... he grilled portabella mushrooms, blotted them well and build pizza on top of them. It was really good, didn't take much time and considerably lower in calories than a regular pizza would be. You mention being tired of tacos but are those the regular, traditional beef...
  20. Just got back from a run to Whole Foods. I bought: Amy's Rice Crust Spinach Cheese Pizza (the spinach flavor is new and I had to try it) Amy's Rice Macaroni & Cheese Van's gluten-free Waffles Assorted Tasty-Bite meals (shelf-stable, don't require refrigeration) Assorted Lara Bars (Lemon is my new favorite) And from their wonderful...
  21. My internist referred me to a gastro doc. The internist missed the possibility of Celiac (she didn't know Celiacs can be overweight) but the gastro doc was from Pakistan and she condidered it right off. The internist thought I might have colon cancer because I was so anemic, the gastro doc said it could be several things and did the EGD and biopsy that...

    ARCHIVED Houston

If you go to the Houston Celiac group meetings or receive the regular newsletters, you will hear the restaurant reviews but the local restaurants that are not national chains are very changable. That's probably one of the main reasons they don't post the info on the website. I've been going to this group for over 3 years and have not found any "For Profit...
  23. This is old info but the last I heard, See's uses wheat flour on their line equipment to keep the candy from sticking. They may have become enlightened and stopped, but I'd check.

    ARCHIVED Melt Down

Chebe rolls don't have to be heated to taste good and they are durable enough to handle some bouncing around. I make my travel rolls with parmesan cheese (instead of just four ounces, I dump the whole 6 oz. package in) and use baking powder. Store them for at least 12 hours sitting out in a basket or colander wrapped in a cotton towel so they can breathe...
  25. Kentucky Fried Chicken Popeye's Fried Chicken Popeye's Fried Shrimp Jack in the Box tacos I've been able to recreate the taste of most things but these are the junk food items I still can't get right. and one non-junk food item -- Premium Saltine crackers
