ARCHIVED Healing
Karen B. replied to sherrid's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had taken Prevacid for 5 years previous to my Celiac diagnosis (haven't needed it since) but I didn't experience burning in my esphogaus even when the doc prescribed the Prevacid. She gave it to me because I complained of a "sour stomach" and it helped that. Are you taking folic acid and B vitamin supplements? They might help your body heal faster... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free...no Drugs...how Long Till I Stop Itching?
Karen B. replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I only had DH once and that was after I was diagnosed. At the time, I didn't know there was something that helped it so I used a product that helps me with poisen ivy, hives and other itchy/weepy rashes (although it's not marketed for that). It's called Earth Therapeutics Tea Tree Oil Liquid Foot Powder Open Original Shared Link and I've used it for years... -
I haven't. Because I have limited freezer space, I use the dry mix. But I know people in my local Celiac group that have bought the frozen products and they love it. I did try something in the freezer case of the international section at Kroger called "pan de yucca" that was made with tapioca and cheese and it was really good. A brown and serve roll...

ARCHIVED Vinegar? Cooking Wine?
Karen B. replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you used fresh cilantro in the salsa, I do know one person that has a rection to that (hives and such) and I know someone that reacts to fresh tomatos. For both of these people, cooked cilantro and cooked tomatos aren't a problem. Red wine vinegar is gluten-free from the beginning. It never had gluten in it that was removed like plain white vinegar... -
I think it is worth it. Everyone else that's tried it at our Celiac group (typically over 100 people at each meeting) and the guys at my office like it. But, I know one person that says she hates the taste of tapioca flour and therefore, didn't like Chebe. I know I've mentioned this before but the worst thing I hear about Chebe is that it was gummy...

My Mom took all of us kids to a pediatrician for regular check-ups. That's what caught my brother's asthma. Doctors have a hard time diagnosing Celiac because the symptoms are all over the place and the symptoms can mimic other problems. And yes, there are clueless doctors. If you don't have a good relationship with your doc, change doctors. But regluar...

Maybe it varies by local restaurant but my Mom has been extremely sick from eating at the Sonic near her and finally after the 3rd time, she gave up. I've never given them a try beyond cokes or limeade. (and yes, my cokes are Cokes :-)

Sorry if this message is long. I'd do the follow-up and ask the doc if the blood test is necessary. Since he's a growing child, the doc may be testing for other things like iron levels, calcium levels and so forth. I saw on another message string tonight where 2 people said they were diagnosed with osteoporosis at 11 and 12! He has Celiac and you...

ARCHIVED I Just Want To Not Have To Cook Once Damnit!
Karen B. replied to snowcoveredheart's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We picked up baked potatos and a small chili x 2 from Wendy's a little while ago for a late supper. gluten-free dinner for 2 for $4.25 -- That's one tasty and healthy option when you just can't bring yourself to cook. We've gotten this dinner more than 10 times over the last 2 years and never had a problem. I do always ask them to not put crackers in the... -
ARCHIVED Baked Beans
Karen B. replied to dairy queen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I keep the small pop-top cans of Van de Camp's baked beans in the pantry for emergency lunches or quickie solo dinners. Every once in awhile we declare a "fend for yourself" evening and Hubby and I grab whatever for dinner. When I need a large amount (to bring a dish to a group lunch for instance) I'll get a large can of Van de Camp's, fry some bacon... -
ARCHIVED Singing The Praises Of Pamela's Amazing Wheat Free Bread
Karen B. replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I knew this mix made great bread that didn't have to be heated to be good and didn't go stale even after 4 days on the counter but pizza crust? Now I'm going to have to try this! Thanks! -
ARCHIVED I Just Want To Not Have To Cook Once Damnit!
Karen B. replied to snowcoveredheart's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Those are the nights when I either hit Taco Cabana for fajitas or chicken tacos or I hit my freezer and nuke an Amy's cheese enchiladas and rip open a pack of Lundberg RiceXpress Sante Fe Grill rice. Es muy bueno! :-) -
ARCHIVED Turning 40 (ugh!) - Want Cake!
Karen B. replied to teamworkjr's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Namaste Vanilla Cake mix isn't white, it has brown flecks in it from real vanilla beans but it's the best vanilla cake I've tasted. -
ARCHIVED 1st gluten-free Camping Trip
Karen B. replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
My favorite campout food (when I'm not backpacking) is Frito Pie and it's gluten-free. Plain Fritos Hormel chili with beans Grated Cheese Also, Dinty Moore is a great hearty camp-out supper and you should have at least one weiner roast. Chebe hot dog buns would be durable enough to travel for that. For breakfast, eggs are gluten-free and can last... -
The worst part about having health problems is that you are least able to do research at exactly the time you need it most. You were only diagnosed a year and a half ago and you just found out about this issue. The article doesn't say no hope -- it says Celiacs have had good results with oral calcium. To me, that says you have a healthier alternative than...

ARCHIVED Diagnosed For 2 Months. Miss Sandwiches. Help?
Karen B. replied to geeze's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
NGG, I've used Chebe to make burger buns that hold together through the whole burger. I would imagine paninis would be no problem. I split a batch into fourths and use my tortilla press to make mini pizza crusts that I can freeze and use like a boboli crust for pizza when I want. I'm still trying to perfect a black bean/garlic pizza crust Chebe recipe... -

I have heard of a treatment with silicone injections to replace the discs between the vertebrae but the last I heard, it was still considered very new and possibly still experimental. My doc has me on 2000 mg calcium and I learned awhile ago to not take calcium without magnesium. The kind I take also has D in it. You might want to read this article....

ARCHIVED When Does It Stop!?
Karen B. replied to snowcoveredheart's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've found time release melatonin helps me. In a pinch, I'll add valerian root but I have to take simethecone with valerian or it really gives me problems. I also sleep with white noise. My co-workers laugh but I use the virtual aquarium from the "Finding Nemo" DVD. It shines just enough light to keep from stepping on a cat on my way to the bathroom... -
Anyone else try eating a piece of candied ginger to kill nausea? It always helps me. I keep a tin of it at work now. (but you have to really like ginger)

ARCHIVED Living Without And/or Gluten Free Living
Karen B. replied to pellegrino's topic in Publications & Publicity
I subscribe to both. Living Without is great. Gluten Free Living has some good articles but it has way more ads and less info than Living Without. If you can only get one, go with Living Without. And yes, I have had to e-nag Gluten Free Living a time or two. OTOH, when Living Without screwed up and sent me two copies, they just told me to pass on... -
ARCHIVED Fish Oil, Omega 3's
Karen B. replied to darlindeb25's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I received the email back today. There is no soy in this product. I see the link didn't come through but we get it from www.livingheart.com under the "Living Heart Store" link. -
ARCHIVED Mental Confusion And Motor Probs From Glutening?
Karen B. replied to angel42's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Red Bull and orange juice help me some through the brain fog but you should see my hand writing during that time. I tell people it's like getting stomach flu. I think that's the closest thing most people can relate it to. -
ARCHIVED Tired Of Coping With Public Restrooms
Karen B. replied to Walter S's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A doc spoke to our local group on the topic "Why did it take so long for my doctor to figure out I had Celiac?" The more I find out about the human body, the more amazed I am when it works right. -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed For 2 Months. Miss Sandwiches. Help?
Karen B. replied to geeze's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
NGG, if you are only making it for yourself, try what my sister does. She makes half a package at a time and it comes out fine. It's one of the most forgiving mixes I've used. One of these days I'll get around to trying the awesome calzones recipe on their site. Open Original Shared Link Good luck!
