  1. Mercury? I didn't know that tattoos had that!
  2. I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread on celiac friendly restaruants in Canada. I sometimes traval to different provinces in Canada and thought that it would be nice to know of restauants in the area I'm visiting that are celiac friendly. I live on PEI and so far these restaurants have been great! Off Broadway - Open Original Shared...
  3. I refused to eat out for a long time... I was afraid that I would get sick. However, I have had a few good experiences with restauants. In my experience, I find the fancier the better... I find that fancy smancy places are less crowed and the staff have more time and patience for "special" diets. I just say that I'm celiac and no bread blah blah can touch...
  4. Those people have been misinformed!
  5. hmmmm. I guess with me it depends on how bad it is. If it's really bad I just don't eat at all and somethimes I just eat whatever I am craving at the time which is usually soup.
  6. Most people that have the gene for celiac are either born with celiac or they get it later in life. For those who get it later in life, I think the gene stays off until an environmental or physical stress triggers the gene on, resulting in celiac. I think there is a small percent of people that get celiac without the gene. Celiac is not a virus or a bacterial...
  7. I think you are right, your body is sensitive to gluten. I'm not sure if gluten sesitivity can lead to celiac, maybe someone else could answer that question. However, it is obvious that your body does not want gluten so it would be a good idea to eliminate it from your diet. As for casein, I think that if your body is producing antibodies againist it would...
  8. I can't see how tattoos would be harmful (unless you have DH or unless you are getting one near your mouth and the dye/coloring contains gluten).
  9. If you can find a meal plan that is accommodating and safe for celiacs then that is great. I don't know of any myself. Personally, I would live off campus in an apartment or a townhouse. For me, I think it would be a lot easier to be in control of my own food. I couldn't put my trust in cooks for every meal of every day, unless they were well trained...
  10. It is hard to change your eating habits but in order to get better you must be 100% gluten free. In order to prevent cross-contamination you must get a separate toaster (if you plan on eating gluten free waffles, bagels and bread), a separate deep fryer, and use your own peanut butter, butter, mayonnaise... There are a lot of gluten free meals that you...

    ARCHIVED Gastro Dr.

I was referred to a GI specialist by my family doctor. My GI doc did the blood test and the biopsy. To my knowledge, the only thing that the GI specialist can do that the family doctor can't do is a biopsy. If you want a biopsy go to a GI specialist.
  12. That sounded like a really fun conference! Thanks for taking notes for us!

    ARCHIVED Gastro Dr.

The gluten-free diet is a big change for some people and I guess the biopsy just confirms the diagnosis so that people don't question their diagnosis. Some people need the intestinal proof!
  14. Welcome, I don't think you are over-reacting at all, I think you are doing the right thing. I think you all should definately get tested for celiac and maybe your son Evan could get a biopsy since IgA deficiency can result in false-negative celiac blood tests. Open Original Shared Link "Immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency occurs more frequently in...
  15. I eat sugar free halls and drink TONS of orange juice for colds. I find that lots of fruit juice really helps, for me anyway... I also take lots of vitamins. I believe that only the sugar free halls are gluten free (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
  16. I am actually noticing that sugar makes me sick too. I am now gluten free, lactose free, and trying to eat less sugar (Although it is hard) Try not to get discouraged with food... I know it's hard at first (we've all been there). But I love the way I eat now, it's very healthy If you ever need any recipe ideas or have any questions about food...
  17. I found this web site that may help: Open Original Shared Link
  18. I tried Ensure but I found it had chalky texture that I didn't like. I drink Boost, and all boost is gluten free EXCEPT chocolate malt. My favorite is chocolate and it tastes best when it's chilled. You can get boost in extra calories, extra protein, and extra fiber.
  19. Yum... mexican food... I hope they sell their products in Canada
  20. That is great news!
  21. A lot of people with celiac disease have more than one problem. I react severely to gluten and lactose, and I just noticed lately that I am reacting to refined sugar. I've also had those skin prick allergy tests and I think I tested postive to about 70% of the stuff they tested. Apparenty I'm allergic to every type of pollen they tested The skin prick...
  22. No I haven't been over to her store yet. I didn't know she had a restaurant! That's great news! I have tried some of her products at the celiac meeting at the QEH and they were very good! I saw the products in at the natures harvest, they have pies, cabbage rolls, and pizza. The pizza looks especially good!
  23. I'll also ask Sobey's to bring Amy's back! I know that a lot of people bought them because there were always a lot gone when I bought them. Also... I was at the Nature's Harvest the other day and noticed that they had Rosie's gluten free frozen boxed pizza! They also had apple pie ummmmmm.
  24. From this source Open Original Shared Link it appears that the tabs are gluten-free but the Reditabs are not gluten-free.
  25. You can only get sick from gluten if you inhale it or ingest it. Your son should be ok, however, on harvesting days he might want to limit his time outside, just to be safe. I think it would be a problem if you could literally see the wheat particles in the air.
