  1. Hideously hot in Cleveland! The only thing getting me through this is thoughts of the big snowstorm we had in February and the hope for blowing snow again someday in six months. I think I would like to get a summer home in Siberia. The only thing I like about summer is the time off (I'm a teacher). The weather is awful.
  2. I miss the foods I used to eat terribly, but I truly look at gluten-containing products as being a poison in my case. For 42 years, I put up with a variety of symptoms. Maybe that's why I am thankful just to be able to do something about it now. My symptoms used to control my life; now I have the ability to control the symptoms, and it is great.
  3. Your best bet is to find a Thai restaurant. If you go out to Cleveland Heights (east side), there's a great Thai place on Coventry Road with some menu options. The staff there is very helpful. Also, there's a popular place downtown called Sushi Rocks. I don't care for sushi, but I had some anyway and was fine. I doubt you're going clear out to the western...
  4. Something really needs to be done about the "frequent flyers," the ones who call 911 or visit the emergency room just to get attention. Personally, I think they should be banned after so many times of coming in without a good reason. Then maybe people like this woman would be able to get the care they need without such a backup.
  5. Oh God, I remember that feeling. I had it for about 42 years off and on. I don't miss it one bit. I am almost phobic about getting glutened.
  6. My one sister-in-law would say something like that. She has no tact whatsoever. After I had to spend a month in the hospital with premature labor, she told me on more than one occasion that I was so lucky to have had a month to rest before my son was born. That was over eighteen years ago, and I still want to strangle the ----- for saying it. I'm sure...
  7. It probably took about 4-6 weeks, I would say. I think most of it was the gluten-free diet, but I can't discount the Cymbalta either. Lots of doctors are using it to treat fibromyalgia.
  8. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia last October. Eventually, my psychiatrist prescribed Cymbalta, an anti-depressant that contains a serotonin reuptake inhibitor and norepinephrine, which helps to address the pain of fibromyalgia. (This replaced the anti-depressant I had been taking.) It worked very well for the pain, although the fatigue remained. ...
  9. Hi, Just be patient with yourself. Sometimes it's really hard to endure something bravely for so long. You just need to feel your feelings without apology. I have nearly cried in restaurants several times since I went on "the diet" in April of this year. Recently, we were having a family celebration at one of our favorite restaurants (first time since...
  10. What a cute little guy! Did you have to wait very long to adopt him?
  11. Hi, I don't think this is what you're referring to, but vitiligo is associated with Celiac Disease. I was just diagnosed with it recently. It's the same thing that Michael Jackson has, but in Caucasions it is not as dramatic. I have it mostly on my neck and face. The pigment in my cheeks has faded to a pale color, but the areas around it are still...
  12. Sandy, I am so glad that you wrote. You brought up a number of things that I hadn't thought about. I forgot to mention that the dog is a puppy. I'm not good at figuring out the age of a dog, but I am guessing that it is 2-3 months old. Someone dumped it deep in the woods of the metropark in our city. He looks very healthy and seems extremely...
  13. Hi, In my spare time I am an auxiliary police officer for the city in which I live. The other day I heard about a dog in our shelter and went to see him. He's a Doberman Pinscher mix and is just adorable! He has a really sweet personality and loves everyone he meets. My son is leaving for college in August, and I think a dog would be a nice addition...
  14. I think I must have had a bad taste in my mouth for decades and didn't realize what it was. After going off of gluten, my mouth tastes totally different. I can only describe it as a "neutral" taste.
  15. I was not on the diet when I became pregnant. I had been diagnosed with irritable bowel, nervous stomach, etc. Therefore, I assumed it was okay for me to get pregnant. Well, I went into premature labor at 32 weeks and had to spend a month in the hospital before my son was born at 36 weeks (a month early). He spent a week in the NICU and is fine now (he...
  16. Congratulations! There are few things more enjoyable than cuddling a newborn!
  17. I've been gluten-free for almost two months now, and I am making a real effort to stay upbeat, but last night was just really rough. I was already sad because it was graduation night for our only child. On top of that, six of us went out to eat at the Cheesecake Factory, one of my favorite restaurants. It was the first time I'd been there since going gluten...
  18. Emma, I am so sorry to hear about your puppy. One of my best friends and his wife have two weimerimers, and I love hearing about them. They are really sweet dogs and so beautiful. It sounds like you've done everything you need to do to bring your dog home. I don't really have anything else to suggest. Please keep all of us posted. I'll call...
  19. When I saw the magic word 'warped,' I was in like Flynn!!!!! This reminds me of myself before the gluten-free diet.
  20. Before I had any idea what was happening to me, especially at night, I would have these episodes that felt like ice water was literally streaming through my veins. It coincided with symptoms of malabsorption that I was also having. It was awful, and there was no way to warm up. Now that I am gluten-free I no longer have this. I'm back to my usual hot...
  21. I'm a vegan right now until at least October. If I couldn't eat soy, though, I would have to start eating fish or something. I really rely on soy for protein.
  22. My pain is on my left side and goes from the front to the back. This morning it was strictly in the front and radiated down the inside of my leg (not like sciatica) and started after I had a couple of (normal) bowel movements with no symptoms of diarrhea. I had been slightly constipated, but felt fine until afterwards. The pain this AM wasn't the normal...
  23. I don't know the brand, but I get my gluten-free bagels at Trader Joe's, and they are wonderful. They are also extremely nutritious and have lots of calcium in them, which is important.
  24. My experiences mirror yours. I have been treated for depression for years, but have seen a lot of improvement lately now that I am off of wheat gluten. When you speak of a lack of motivation, I can really relate to that, too. Many times I would just sit and sit without any will to move from my chair. I, too, have a degree- a Bachelor's- and have been...
  25. I've gotten canker sores and these horrendous sores on the side of my tongue that make it hard to even eat and swallow because they hurt so badly. It's gotten better since I went off of gluten, but sometimes when my seasonal allergies are bad, the canker sores will come back.
