ARCHIVED Are You A Celiac Who Reacts To gluten-free Oats? Please Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I figured out I was intolerant to oats by challenging them a couple years ago. I ate them three times a day and reacted by day 2. It was the same reaction that I get to gluten. I didn't like the one Bob's Red Mill product I tried and since there are so many I do like, like Pamela's mix and Tom Sawyer, I never tried any others. As to meds I don't think oats... -
ARCHIVED Asthma And Dairy - Is It Lactose Or Casien Or Other That Is The Culprit?
ravenwoodglass replied to StacyA's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If this started after you added dairy back in perhaps you could drop all dairy again and see if it resolves. -
ARCHIVED Lemon Water
ravenwoodglass replied to twe0708's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I tried it once for a couple of days as I like lemonade. I just put fresh lemon in water with a bit of sugar. For me it caused a great deal of discomfort. I have no idea why maybe just too much acid for my system. I hope your not talking about the lemon water detox with cayenne pepper and maple syrup. If you are thinking about doing that do a search on lemon... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Like The Odd Man Out Here
ravenwoodglass replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm glad you have a good freind that is going to help you through the process. As another poster stated depression can be directly related to celiac. There have been many studies on it and if you do a search using the words celiac and neurological or celiac and depression you will find a lot of peer reviewed info. It is hard at first but once you have healed... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Like The Odd Man Out Here
ravenwoodglass replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As was stated folks that are doing the diet strictly and still have issues are encouraged to go back to their doctors. There are many here who feel much better and have gotten their lives back by following the diet even when tests were negative. Can we have other issues going on, of course we can. Can we have other intolerances, yes we can. Many who are... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Without Weight Loss?
ravenwoodglass replied to NancyL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The biopsy can also give a false negative. When your done with testing the best way to know if you need the diet is to do the diet. -
ARCHIVED My Husband's Blood Results
ravenwoodglass replied to Simona19's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yea it's okay to skip the endo with positive blood tests and it is becoming much more common for doctors to skip them. I hope he is doing better soon. -
ARCHIVED Jessica's Progress
ravenwoodglass replied to Loobiej's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know it's scarey when our children are ill but now that she has been diagnosed and will be on the diet her problems should go away and she will avoid many more down the road. Do make sure that the rest of the family is at least tested and sometimes making the whole home gluten free can be helpful. Sometimes the hardest part is getting the diagnosis, for... -
ARCHIVED Recovery Phase - Quite Confused
ravenwoodglass replied to Kalgar's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What are you eating? If you can go with mostly unprocessed whole foods that can help you heal fastest. Make sure that you have your own dedicated toaster and scratched pots and pans, strainers for pasta and any cutting boards that have been used for gluten foods. It can take some time to heal and some of us find a food and symptom diary to be helpful in pinpointing... -
ARCHIVED 3 Month Check After Diagnosis And More
ravenwoodglass replied to Judy3's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's great news. It does feel so good when our 'personal pharmacy' keeps getting smaller and smaller. Glad to hear everything went so well. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Without Weight Loss?
ravenwoodglass replied to NancyL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have they done a celiac panel yet? That would be a good first step if they haven't done one already. Keep in mind that even on gluten you could still have a false negative on both blood and biopsy. I also was the heaviest I had ever been in my life before diagnosis and others have also gained weight as they got sicker so that doesn't rule it out although... -
ARCHIVED Kidney Problems?
ravenwoodglass replied to scuzy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are continueing to have pain and blood in your urine and possible problems with your kidney that are concerning you then it might be a good idea to see a nephrologist. They specialize in kidney issues. If your symptoms have been relieved with the diet then IMHO it would be counterproductive to gluten yourself for the 2 or 3 months it would take to... -
ARCHIVED People Who Think They Might Have Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hope you told those folks about the high rate of false negatives and encouraged them to try the diet anyway. They may not choose to do so but I sure do wish someone, somewhere had clued me in when they first started testing me. No doctor in all the years they kept testing me ever said a word about the high rate of false negatives. Their doctors likely didn... -
ARCHIVED Almost Cried At Work!
ravenwoodglass replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Becca, Welcome to the board. Your going to find a lot of good ideas and support here. Do check out the recipe section and as another poster said if you need ideas for replacements just ask. I go with Thai Kitchen rice noodles a lot instead of specialty gluten free pasta. It is a bit less expensive and I love the angel hair but they also make a thicker one... -

I don't recall ever seeing this section before. Whoever is responsible for putting it in thanks for doing so. -
ARCHIVED Can Gluten Be Absorbed Through The Skin?
ravenwoodglass replied to Aunt Jayne's topic in Super Sensitive People
Anything that gets onto your hands or contacts a mucous membrane can cause the antibodies to form and a reaction to occur. Some are more sensitive to small amounts than others. Some use gluten containing topicals and don't have a reaction. I am not one of them. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Gluten Free Black Beans
ravenwoodglass replied to CantWeight's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree. I just carefully rinse and sort them before I use. Most bags even say to sort to look for rocks. I have on occasion found a pebble but as of yet have not found a wheat grain. I appretiate the companies like Wegmans that tell us of the risk. -
ARCHIVED Those That Have Used Enterolab Testing....
ravenwoodglass replied to salexander421's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think it took about 2 to 3 weeks for me to get mine back. PS Boy do I miss the days when I was a "Proud breastfeeding, babywearing, part time cosleeping" Mom. Enjoy them now cause they are gone way to fast. -
ARCHIVED Feeling Like The Odd Man Out Here
ravenwoodglass replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Please don't give up hope. For one thing the liver is an organ that can regenerate. Maybe the diet won't be a 'cure' but it certainly can't hurt anything and you may find it stops the degeneration in it's tracks. There are quite a few people here that have had elevated liver enzymes and other signs of liver problems that have seen them resolve once they have... -
ARCHIVED Licorice
ravenwoodglass replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't have an answer about the tea but Gimbals makes gluten free licorice scotties. I eat the jelly beans all the time but haven't seen the scotties in stores. Now that I found the website I'll have to order a bunch. Off to do so right now. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Jessica's Progress
ravenwoodglass replied to Loobiej's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
He sounds like a great doctor. The one thing I wouldn't do is put her back on gluten in the future. Doctors used to think that kids would outgrow celiac because it can be a long time after they go back on gluten before the gut symptoms appear. Meanwhile the antibodies can attack other organs. IMHO it is not worth the risk. Glad to hear she is doing so much... -
ARCHIVED Stevia Is Not Necessarily Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to Abbaskid's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Stevia is in the ragweed family so if someone is allergic to ragweed they may have problems with stevia. I am allergic to ragweed and get an allergic reaction to it but it is not a gluten reaction. -
ARCHIVED Kidney Problems?
ravenwoodglass replied to scuzy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have the same issues with the kidneys that you describe. As long as I stay away from gluten I am pain and bleeding free. Can't say it will be the same for you. If you want a diagnosis of celiac from the GI you need to go back on gluten for a couple of months. If you just can't stand the pain of that then keep in mind we don't need a doctors permission to... -
ARCHIVED People Who Think They Might Have Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just a quick off topic note, after your done with your tests go gluten free for a while and see if it helps no matter what the results. I have had my arthritis in remission now for 8 years and while my joints still look gnarly they work and my pain, which all the meds never helped, is now totally gone...unless I get glutened.
