ARCHIVED Need Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to Simona19's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac is very strongly genetic and it is very common for children to inherit the genes for it. The endo is a very simple procedure but if he doesn't want to have it done he doesn't have to. He does need to get on and stay on the diet though whether he gets the endo or not. Perhaps you can have him visit here, we have a lot of younger members who maybe can... -
ARCHIVED Howdy From New Hampshire
ravenwoodglass replied to RozzyRay's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi and welcome to the board. As you will see on this board there are many of us that went a very long time from becoming celiac to finally getting diagnosed. For some the anxiety issues resolve a bit gluten free so hopefully that will happen with you. Do feel free to ask any questions you need to and this is a great place for support. I am thinking about... -
That's great news. I'm back in college and these posts make me wonder if maybe there is something I can eat on those long days at campus. I'll have to check things out as it would be so nice to not have to cook on the days I have late classes. Congrats on the new job and I hope everything continues to go well.

That's great to hear. Glad you had a good time. Happy Birthday to your little one. They grow up way to fast. -
ARCHIVED Beans, Cucumber, Turnips And Cabbage
ravenwoodglass replied to Amwilkes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Corn does have gluten. It is used in animal feed and pesticides. It is however different from the gluten found in wheat, rye and barley, which is what celiacs react to. As far as I know corn gluten is not used in human food. Some people do have an intolerance to corn though. Open Original Shared Link Corn gluten is a natural byproduct of processed... -
ARCHIVED Need A Pep Talk
ravenwoodglass replied to SuperMolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You have gotten a couple great answers already and I agree with them fully. It is not selfish to need to be healthy and if getting glutened makes you crabby that is going to affect your family. Having a healthy and happy Mom is very important and you want to be around for them as long as you can. Since your DH is willing to do the whole house gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Think I Got Glutened By The Dog Food
ravenwoodglass replied to Stacy hated pancake Sunday's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I actually have a great sense of humor but not when it is at the expense of someone who is suffering and asking honest questions. -
ARCHIVED At A Loss
ravenwoodglass replied to lilgooberluvsya's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In my opinion it is best to go cold turkey. Gluten in us causes antibody reactions and you want to stop those reactions as quickly as you can. Gluten can also be addictive so when folks stop it they can go through withdrawls and if you feed that withdrawl craving it will keep the withdrawl process going. If you go cold turkey the withdrawls, if you have them... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing After Being Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to Marz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Enterolab says they can pick up the antibodies for up to a year after you have been gluten free. I don't think you would need a challenge after just 2 months. If you want to be sure about that perhaps you could call or email them to be certain. -
ARCHIVED Joint Inflammation
ravenwoodglass replied to MarkR555's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree that at those times you have likely been glutened. It is not unusual for our reactions to become a bit more severe after we have been gluten free for a while. It will take some time for the inflammation to go down, that often takes longer to go away than the GI issues. Hopefully you will heal quickly. Make sure none of your roommates is using your... -
ARCHIVED I Feel Like A Hypochondriac
ravenwoodglass replied to Coolclimates's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have PTSD. I hope your not doing what I did for so many years, ignoring it and hoping it will go away by itself. That doesn't work. If your having nightmares that is disrupting your sleep and that alone will make you not only exhausted but the type of nightmares that come with PTSD and what I call the daymares can raise your fight or flight reactions to... -
Since Celiac causes inflammation it could be related but it also could be something entirely unrelated. If the pain is bad you may want to see a podiatrist (foot doctor) who may be able to tell you what the pain is from and possibly do something to alleviate it. You also need to get strict with the diet, you are not doing yourself any favors by not following...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pie Filling
ravenwoodglass replied to piglips82's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you don't get an answer about the ready mades pie filling is easy to make yourself. Fresh fruit with a bit of sugar or honey and sprinkle on some corn starch to thicken. -
ARCHIVED Experiment Or Not
ravenwoodglass replied to scarlett77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
After literally blowing up my family's oven at age 4 I have to agree with this. You don't know when you might be out of the room and he might turn on a burner instead and start a fire. As to the original posters question, no I would not advise deliberately glutening him. Reactions can differ and you would be doing damage. When he gets a bit older and gets... -
ARCHIVED Family Frustration
ravenwoodglass replied to ilookthetype's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know you don't want to go into gory details with your Mom but if you want her to understand you really need to. If you can't bring it up in person write her a long letter explaining that although you didn't complain you were suffering. You may find her to be more understanding of your situation if you open up about it a bit. -
Your doctor is right about the weak positive. Many here use the pregnacy comparison. You are or you aren't, there is no such thing as being a 'little bit' Celiac, however a weak positive can diagnose you before your damage gets so severe that there is no coming back as far as destruction to other organs. As far as your freind goes, I have to wonder if...

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed Last Week
ravenwoodglass replied to cmathews03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board. Hang in there it will get better. We do often go through a bit of a greiving process after we get diagnosed so feel free to be angry and a bit sad. It is a big life change. You also may be going through a bit of a withdrawl but that also will pass. Things will get easier as you start to feel better. It is hard in college but you are... -
ARCHIVED Gravol?
ravenwoodglass replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If your symptoms don't ease up soon get yourself to the doctor. You likely have salmonella and sometimes folks need a course of antibiotics to clear it up. You may be fine after a day or so in which case don't worry. Also make sure you call that takeout place and talk to the manager. He will need to alert the staff as to what happened. If the manager seems... -
ARCHIVED Skin Biopsy Results?
ravenwoodglass replied to MacieMay's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If the biopsy was done next to a lesion you should be able to see where it was done. Did your husband watch the procedure? If he did can he tell you about where the biopsy was done? Can you call the doctors office and ask? The placement of the biopsy and whether it was on the lesion itself should be in the record. I would ask to follow this up with the... -

ARCHIVED Suspect I Have Celiac, But Negative Home Test. Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to rhiannon34's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Could you just ask the ped to test them? In some countries it is part of the routine testing done in children. If needed tell the ped you have celiac symptoms yourself and if you do better on the diet let them know that the diet is helping you. -
I would ask the store if they could get the Kinni brand for you. Be really careful with Amy's as many have CC issues with them. Gluten Free Pantry makes a French Bread mix that makes a really good pizza crust.

ARCHIVED Joint Inflammation
ravenwoodglass replied to MarkR555's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes some of us do get joint inflammation. Mine was so bad that at one time I was thought to have RA. I have been in pretty much total remission from my arthritis since about 6 months after I went gluten free. If I get CC'd somehow simple asprin takes care of the inflammation and the pain. Could you have gotten glutened on your trip? Not everything is gluten... -
Happy for you that you got your pizza back. We do sometimes find that after we have fully healed we can add some stuff back in. Now that you can have it again you may want to look for the Kinnickinnick crusts. At 4 crusts for about $9 they come out much cheaper than buying the ready made ones even once you add in the sauce ( I freeze leftover sauce flat since...

ARCHIVED Missing The First Time?
ravenwoodglass replied to randomceliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
False postives are very rare in the blood work. False negatives in both blood and biopsy are much more common. The choice of whether to continue on gluten and biopsy is up to you. If you feel you can stay compliant and be strict with the diet without one then go ahead and start the diet. However if at a later date you do decide you want the biopsy you will...
