ARCHIVED Doctor Won't Help Me
ravenwoodglass replied to Rdv22222's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You mention that you don't have insurance. If you really need a doctors diagnosis do check and see if you qualify for one of the low or no cost insurance programs or perhaps even Medicaid. You may not qualify but it doesn't hurt to check and you can have some savings and a job and still qualify for some of them. If you feel you can stick to the diet without... -
If you can find Gluten Free Pantry mixes in your area try their French Bread mix using the recipe on the back to make it as a pizza crust. The mix will be very sticky so I usually chill it for a little bit to make it easier to spread. I like a deep dish pizza so I spread it thick but you could also spread it a bit thinner to make a thinner crust. Since I...

ARCHIVED Anxiety And Depression In Remission After 4 Years gluten-free?
ravenwoodglass replied to LynneM's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you talked to your doctor about weaning off the drug so you can get some guidance from him while doing it? It would be a good idea. It can be hard to wean off of this type of med and your doctor may be able to help with the process. There may be something you can take that is not addictive to help with the issues you are experiencing while you go through... -
ARCHIVED More Digestive Issues Following Gluten Free Diet
ravenwoodglass replied to fiveftjen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For me the stomach gurgles signal that I have gotten some gluten somewhere. How strict are you with the diet? Are you eating mostly whole unprocessed foods? Are you avoiding CC by using a dedicated toaster, getting new pans if the old ones are scratched, a new colander or strainer for any gluten-free pastas? Also don't be real quick to add specialty gluten... -
ARCHIVED A Question For Catholic Celiacs
ravenwoodglass replied to brie1120's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It has been a long time since I went to Mass but back then we had to fast after dinner the night before. I would get ill from the host. As Peter said talk to your priest and see if they can give you just the wine, in a seperate cup from the communal chalice. The gluten-free host still contains a low level of gluten so that should be avoided. It has to by... -
ARCHIVED Disoriented, And Unable To Walk.
ravenwoodglass replied to Dreamtemperature's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Does this mean you are still eating gluten and just avoiding junk food and alcohol? If you are still eating gluten when you get done with celiac screening stop. The symptoms you are describing sound like gluten reactions. The problems with balance and the difficulty walking could be gluten ataxia. Even if your celiac screening is negative you would be wise... -

ARCHIVED Need A Reliably Gluten Free Brand Of Spices
ravenwoodglass replied to VioletBlue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't dry them first I just cut and freeze. With herbs I buy them fresh at the store and then wash, dry on paper towels and then freeze. -
ARCHIVED Can Anyone Help?
ravenwoodglass replied to tired28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with the joints taking longer, for me it was about 6 months before I went into remission although I still have swelling in the mornings it resolves within an hour or two and I don't have pain. Be aware also when they test your B12 that if you are taking a supplement with folate that can give a false 'normal' reading to the B12. Also it can take... -
ARCHIVED Stupid Things People Say
ravenwoodglass replied to adab8ca's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Me too. IF my neuro hadn't been so clueless about my brain lesions it would have saved me years of pain and continued degeneration. My neuro is the only doctor that I ever considered sueing. I didn't though as that just isn't me. -
ARCHIVED Where To Go From Here?
ravenwoodglass replied to Neali's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Rather than having the poor thing go through hell on earth with a gluten challenge for months for blood tests and biopsy you may want to get an appointment with a dermatologist. When you see them tell them what is happening when she eats a gluten food. If before you have the appointment she has an outbreak take some good pictures of it. The little blisters... -
ARCHIVED Stupid Things People Say
ravenwoodglass replied to adab8ca's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hate comments like that also. The last person that said that to me hit me on a bad day and I replied, 'Yea I am sure you'd just love to almost die so you could be skinny' That shut her mouth real quick. I do hope they give you some conclusive results but please do the diet no matter what the results of the tests. False negatives are all too common. You... -
I had celiac since I was a young child and wasn't diagnosed until well into my 40's. The last 15 years before I was diagnosed were hell on earth. And yes I also ODed on 'whole grains' because every doctor I saw told me get more fiber and heres some prozac because all your problems are your 'nerves'. I have now been healthier for the last 8 years than at any...

ARCHIVED Stupid Things People Say
ravenwoodglass replied to adab8ca's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your neuro is as clueless as mine was. It may take some time to heal but you can heal your neuro issues that are gluten related on the diet. It did take a couple of months for me to see any difference but by six months I could walk unaided by canes or walls for the first time in literally years. I had neuro symptoms for almost 25 years before gut symptoms... -
When a doctor goes to the trouble to check themselves on the gluten statis of a drug they are prescribing make sure to ask the doctor to note not only the drug but also the maker on the script. The doctor also needs to write DAW (dispense as written) into the special area on the script for it. The pharmacey can't substitute another brand or generic for your...

ARCHIVED I Need A Little Help! Thank You!
ravenwoodglass replied to brett31em's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have only been on the diet a couple of weeks and it does take some time to heal. What are you eating? You should be eating a diet with as much unprocessed food as is possible and you need to make sure you have done things like getting a new toaster, replacing colanders, strainers and wooden utensils. You need your own dedicated condiments, nut butters... -
I haven't had any actual experience with eating hospital food as a patient. I did work in nutritional services a long time ago and they seemed to be knowledgeable about CC issues. I came there from a restaurant that catered to folks with food allergies and intolerances so they had me handle some of the 'special' meals. There are quite a few people who have...

I am sorry you are all having to go through this. Yes do speak with the dietian but also be aware that some hospitals are better than others at getting the diet right. If you feel at all uncomfortable talk to your doctor about getting permission to bring him food from home.

ARCHIVED Distilled Vinegar Question
ravenwoodglass replied to Mizzo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Heinz uses distilled vinegar from corn. I use their ketchup and their white vinegar all the time. I am also lucky and live near a Wegmans so for pickles and stuff like BBQ sauce I buy their brand. If I remember correctly someone in the founders family is a celiac that reacts to distilled gluten so only nongluten distilled items will have the circle G. With... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Immune To Poisin Oak/ivy?
ravenwoodglass replied to rdunbar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This really IMHO sounds like DH. If you use iodized salt get some uniodized to use for a while. I hope this clears up soon as the itching can be miserable. I found cool compresses to help but stuff like calamine lotion made it worse. If it shows up again after you get another accidental glutening you will basically have your answer. -
ARCHIVED Kamchatka Vodka
ravenwoodglass replied to StacyA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am one of the celiacs who do react to distilled gluten grains. I stick to the potato vodkas, clear good rum like Bacardi White or tequila if I want hard liquor, which isn't often. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free...and Stressed Out
ravenwoodglass replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know how I forgot this one since when classes were taking up so much time this summer I fixed it 2 or 3 times a week for dinner. The Jimmy Dean Breakfast Skillets. They are in the freezer section in bags. They have peppers, potatoes, onions and either sausage or bacon. You fry those up and add a scrambled egg to the pan when the taters are done.... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free...and Stressed Out
ravenwoodglass replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think a lot of us can sympathize with that. I cope by keeping a couple of things on hand that I can throw together real quick. I'll give you 2 of my favs and hopefully others will add to it. Dinty Moore Beef Stew I add a handful of a green veggie, either peas or green beans when I heat it up and a gluten-free roll or bread and butter. Dinner done. I... -
Since you have reacted to other items that you have made with this flour mix I would find a different mix.

ARCHIVED Can Anyone Help?
ravenwoodglass replied to tired28's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You do sound like your in the right place. Before you spend your money on the biocard call your doctor and make sure they have tested you for celiac. If they haven't then ask them to give you the complete celiac panel. You can try the diet to see if it helps but do wait to try until after all your testing is done or you will have a false negative. Sometimes...
