ARCHIVED What Is Going On With My Feet!
ravenwoodglass replied to Beth in NC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you are doing an elimination diet you need to wait a week before adding a new food. It can take 3 to 5 days for an intolerance reaction to occur. You also should add something 'orange' to your diet. Your best bets are going to be either sweet potatoes or carrots. With a doctor assisted elimination diet your starting diet would be quite colorful. That... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge?
ravenwoodglass replied to Whocareswins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am glad you called and that you are going to try the diet full force after they test. So many times the doctors just tell us to challenge but they rarely tell us to let them know when things get bad. Then folks continue even when symptoms get severe. Most doctors are concerned about our well being and just don't realize how severe the reactions are.... -
We also should remember that it is not the doctor who schedules and deals with no shows for appointments. It is the staff who may not even have seen the test results. One way to prevent this occuring in the future is to request that all lab and testing results have copies sent to your home. Also were you with your husband for the endo? Sometimes they...

ARCHIVED Too Soon To Know?
ravenwoodglass replied to strawberrygm's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I think you are a very wise Mom. You may want to consider making the house gluten free. There is a strong chance that the rest of the family will benefit as well. -
ARCHIVED Still Drinking Regular Beer - No Problems
ravenwoodglass replied to Mountaineer Josh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also am going to suggest this. One of the first things you may notice is that you do not get as good of a 'buzz' off of wine or gluten free alcohols. This is a good thing and will help you to realize that the gluten is affecting your neuro system more than you realize. Also bear in mind that gluten is a very addictive substance and you may find the... -
ARCHIVED I Have Celiac Now What....
ravenwoodglass replied to irunwithscissors's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the boards. Please do encourage not just your Mom but all first degree relatives to be tested, even if they seem symptom free. Your doctor should have told you of that need but not all do. You have come to a great place for info and support and I hope you continue to improve. Things can be touch and go for the first few months while you heal... -
I can definately identify with this Even as a child I realized that when I ate breakfast before school my tummy would be louder not quieter. By adulthood the constant rumblings were always present and I usually carried a coat or at least a big purse to put on my lap if I was going somewhere quiet. The only thing that stopped the noise was being gluten...

ARCHIVED Feeling Optimistic
ravenwoodglass replied to Live2BWell's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The changes can be amazing. I was just happy at first not to have to live with a toilet strapped to my back and to be able to give up the anticholeragenics I had to take every day. I never expected my other autoimmune issues to resolve also. I hope the same happens with you. Thanks for letting us know how you are doing and I hope things continue to improve... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge?
ravenwoodglass replied to Whocareswins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is a hard question to answer because so many times folks will have a false negative even on a full gluten diet if the right places are not biopsied, if the slides are not read properly, or if the person has celiac changes like scalloping that the doctor may not recognize as related to celiac if the villi are not totally destroyed. Your reaction to the... -
ARCHIVED Been Eating Wheat Now For A Few Months
ravenwoodglass replied to CuriousOne's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do bear in mind that some of us after we heal will SEEM to be able to tolerate gluten for a time. This is called the honeymoon effect and was the main reason why they used to think that celiac was a childhood disease that could be outgrown. We now know that was not the reality. It can take time for the antibodies to build up enough for some of us to become... -

ARCHIVED Gluten And Latex Paint?
ravenwoodglass replied to rmducote's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The NIH has a household products database that can be helpful with the hidden gluten in stuff like drywall and paints and even has some stuff like shampoos and Rogaine (yep Rogaine has wheat in it) in listings. The database is far from all inclusive but I have found it helpful at times. Here is a link: Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Allergy Re-testing?
ravenwoodglass replied to Jenny (AZ via TX)'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The skin prick testing is for histamine reactions, or true allergies, not intolerances. It will not pick up celiac reactions. I had this done by my allergist before he put me on an elimination diet. In my case it was quite helpful because I showed up allergic to 98 out of 99 substances and it was a key to my allergist starting to think celiac. Not because... -
ARCHIVED Unresponsive Celiac- Plz Help
ravenwoodglass replied to grshockey's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is fine to let her sleep when she can when glutened. If the pain she is experiencing is in her stomach she may want to try some name brand pepto bismal if she tolerates it. It can help a lot with the pain if it is in the stomach. If she is having intestinal cramping it won't help that a great deal though. If she has D it is best if she can to just... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results For An Asian Friend
ravenwoodglass replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh my gosh someone with the same gene as me I never thought I would ever see it. Yes the DQ9 is a recognized celiac gene in Japan and possibly in other Asian countries. I would say with his fecal fat score that he still has a bit of healing to do. He should make sure he is eating as simply as he possibly can and if he tolerate some digestive enzymes... -
ARCHIVED At The End Of My Rope
ravenwoodglass replied to rainbowgoddess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you gluten free yet? Your issues do sound like they could be celiac or gluten related. I would ask the doctor for a celiac panel if he has not done one yet. If he has and it was negative and you don't plan on having an endoscopy then give the diet a try. That should be your first step and if the issues don't resolve after a few months gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Sensitive Stomach Starting Out...
ravenwoodglass replied to frostine's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One of the best ways to speed healing is to try to eat as many 'pure' unprocessed foods as you can when you first start out. Shop the outside aisles of your store in the fresh meats and produce sections and look for frozen one ingredient veggies in the frozen food aisle. It is also a good idea to avoid dairy at first, the same villi that produce the enzyme... -
ARCHIVED Lactaid Pills - Kind Of Ranting!
ravenwoodglass replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes all dairy would need to be avoided including items that are labeled lactose free or a non-dairy product if it still contains casein (which many do) To find out more I would post a specific question or two here, lots of us here have to avoid it, and I would also do a search on a good search engine using the words 'casien intolerance' you should... -
I am so glad to hear this. Cancer is one of the biggest fears that many of us face who have been undiagnosed for years. I am relieved to hear that the biopsy was negative, you must have had some very tense days to go through while you waited.

ARCHIVED Normal - Now What?
ravenwoodglass replied to ohsotired's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good plan on doing the diet anyway after you have done all the testing you feel you want to go through. IMHO it was NOT a good plan to put you through the colonoscopy and wait on the endo. There are two reasons why I think this was a bad idea, one there is no way he could find celiac on a colonoscopy so if there was strong reason to suspect celiac he was... -
ARCHIVED First Visit To The Gi Doc...
ravenwoodglass replied to Myrna's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You REALLY need to find another GI. He is not even considering celiac, if he was he would do a endo along with the colonoscopy. This one is clueless and IMHO all you are going to get from him are big bills and lots of scripts. -
ARCHIVED The Gluten-free Kitchen
ravenwoodglass replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No. As you said they can eat gluten outside the house and it is not like you are going to starve them. Many folks just can not imagine not eating gluteny and overprocessed foods, even some doctors consider it a horrible fate. Your family is going to be eating much healthier in general now. -
Hello and welcome. The first thing I am going to suggest is that you ask your doctors specifically for the blood test for celiac, do this before you stop eating gluten. You MUST still be eating gluten for the blood and if desired the endo, otherwise you will get a false negative. Even on a full gluten diet some will still have a false negative so after...

ARCHIVED Happy Birthday, Ravenwoodglass!
ravenwoodglass replied to jerseyangel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have no idea!!! If I figure that mystery out I will let you in. Thanks for the good wishes everyone. This will be a quiet Bday as the city has both ends of my street blocked off so I have no excuse for not being lazy and just putting in the garden in my roses. I did something yesterday to celebrate that I would reccommend to any and all... -
ARCHIVED Lactaid Pills - Kind Of Ranting!
ravenwoodglass replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Neither did I! I have been surprised though that many of the dairy replacements haven't been too bad. Hemp milk turned out to be rather tasty, I really enjoy the chocolate and Wegmans Rice milk seems to work well in my cooking and baking. Finding a butter sub was hard for me because they all have soy. I used Ghee for a bit and had no problems with...
