ARCHIVED Are Topicals Really That Important?
ravenwoodglass replied to lilred1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am very careful of topicals. Anything that can get on your skin or hair can get into your body. Have you ever used a lotion or something with sparkles in it? Even though you may wash your hands multiple times during the day you will most likely find those sparkles on your fingers countless times. If you eat with your fingers, wipe your hands across... -
ARCHIVED Xanax Contains Gluten
ravenwoodglass replied to ENF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would want to know the source of the cellulose. If the company states that it is not safe from what I can see that would be the most likely ingredient. Someone else maybe can shed a brighter light. -
ARCHIVED Why Bother To Have An Endoscopy?
ravenwoodglass replied to Shawn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Why bother with an Endoscopy if you are already diagnosed with DH? Why to pay for the GI's trip to Europe of course, he promised your doctor some duty free perfume. Just kidding, sort of. -
ARCHIVED Endoscopy Results (so Far)
ravenwoodglass replied to Wthrman13's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am really hoping that even if the biopsies are negative that you will still give the diet a good try. And now that the biopsies are done is the time to do it. The number of us who had ulcers and other problems that are directly gluten related are not insignificant. My DD's primary findings were about the same as yours she chose not to medicate until... -
They can be powdered with cornstarch but they can use oats. There all also gloves that use a nonorganic material that would not be a problem for us. I have such a hard time getting them to check the materials they use that I just ask for nonpowdered gloves. Many use nonpowdered and nonlatex routinely or have them on hand.

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Hate The Activia Commercials?
ravenwoodglass replied to cgilsing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been known to scream that. Good thing about that tendency is my kids don't complain about my channel surfing the jewelry channels during ads anymore. Bad thing- my neighbors think I'm a bit 'off' now. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Hate The Activia Commercials?
ravenwoodglass replied to cgilsing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That one annoys me almost as much as the little wheat guy who says he will help your kid think better in school. Yea right. -
Unlike the other poster I have had a lot of problems even getting dentists to check products. After being poisoned by 3 different dentists I haven't been able to get up the nerve to even finish the crowns I have. I have been told that one product that has likely gotten me was the gel that they apply before the injection. You want to make sure they check...

ARCHIVED Test Results Were Negative But.....
ravenwoodglass replied to Kathy'sUnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Me, over and over and over and over. I like you had a real quick response GI wise, other stuff took longer to go away. Glad it is helping, that is what counts more than any bloodtest IMHO. -
ARCHIVED Rheumatoid Arthritis
ravenwoodglass replied to cgilsing's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I could be wrong but I think the answer is right there. I had severe arthritis with joint damage and pain that the pills they gave me didn't touch. I had a lot of indications and symptoms of RA but was not forming the rheumatoid factor that is usually found with it. That is looked for in a blood test. Celiac was for me the cause and my arthritis has... -
ARCHIVED Parkinson's--a Celiac Connection?
ravenwoodglass replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for posting that Matt. I hate to think where I would be if I hadn't been diagnosed when I was. Actually I am pretty sure I would have been in a nursing home or dead by now. The above describes me, I hid a lot of stuff even from family and it was even scarier than the pain in many ways. I couldn't remember the names of simple things like a fork... -
ARCHIVED Gaining Weight Post-diagnosis? Also, Hair Loss?
ravenwoodglass replied to knav76's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can take a while for the antibody reaction to leave which for many of us plays a part in the hair loss. Try and be patient although I know how hard that is. Suave will clearly label gluten and Dove will also. I prefer the Dove but used to use Giovanni products but had to stop because of a soy allergy. A lot of people like those also. If you ask about... -
ARCHIVED Candidal Infections On The Skin
ravenwoodglass replied to sansglutengrl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I would advise you to check with your doctor. There are many different rashes and causes for them. I get a 'rash' like what you describe when gluten leaves my body for example. You don't want to use something if you don't know for sure what the rash is, you could make it worse. -
ARCHIVED Gaining Weight Post-diagnosis? Also, Hair Loss?
ravenwoodglass replied to knav76's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think your doctor is right about the weight gain, as you heal you will be absorbing more from your food and this will help you put a bit of weight on. Not a bad thing if you have always been a bit underweight. Also many of the specialty gluten free foods are very high in carbs and calories and that can also contribute if you are eating a lot of them.... -
ARCHIVED Greetings
ravenwoodglass replied to Zeno's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Glad to hear that your iron levels are improving with the supplements, it sounds like you have a great and knowledgable doctor, she's a keeper. It will be an adjustment to go gluten-free, some of us do it easily but they are in the minority. Keep it as simple as you can at first and try and go with naturally gluten-free food as much as you can. My DH... -
ARCHIVED I Get My Test Results On Wednesday
ravenwoodglass replied to Idiote Savante Goddess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually I haven't seen them but will look for them. They didn't come up on a search I did, or I didn't notice them with everything else and when I got the results and asked here if anyone knew anything about the Double DQ9 I didn't get any responses. I will check out what he has to say, thanks for the heads up. My main curiosity is because I am wondering... -
ARCHIVED Confusion Enerolab?
ravenwoodglass replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You may want to consider switching your dog to a grain or at least gluten free bisquit. There are brands that are safe. Not only could you be causing problems with just wiping and not washing your hands but also your dogs saliva is going to be gluteney, does he lick you? Does he lick himself and then you pet him? Do you use a canned gluten dog food and... -
ARCHIVED I Get My Test Results On Wednesday
ravenwoodglass replied to Idiote Savante Goddess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In Japan it is also associated with a form of adult onset Type 1 diabetes, that was the more common association until they started eating a more Americanized diet according to one paper I read. In Turkey it is associated with skin conditions. I still find it strange that I got two copies of the gene from parents of such different but caucasian backgrounds... -

If you are not anemic then you don't have an iron deficiency. They should have tested iron, ferritin, folate and B12. Sometimes people can have numbers that are in a normal range but still be having a deficiency problem with B12. Do you what your tested levels were? And their reference ranges? Do not and I repeat DO NOT supplement with iron unless you... -
ARCHIVED I Get My Test Results On Wednesday
ravenwoodglass replied to Idiote Savante Goddess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you considered going with Enterolab? I do want to give you a caution about gene testing, when my DD had her gene tests done they only checked for the two main celiac genes and told her she didn't have the genes and that her relief on the diet was all in her head. Unfortunately she believed and now attributes all her celiac symptoms to stress even after... -
ARCHIVED Greetings
ravenwoodglass replied to Zeno's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That is correct, if they are looking for celiac damage to diagnose you then they do want you to keep poisoning yourself. You do need to know that gluten intolerance is just as serious as full blown celiac. Regardless of the results of the biopsy you need to go gluten free. There are lots of false negatives as there is no way to biopsy all 22 ft of your... -
ARCHIVED Which Of These Foods "glutened" Me?!
ravenwoodglass replied to jewi0008's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the Starbucks coffee has a gluten additive like barley malt that tests out at a level that the government says is safe they can say it is gluten free even if it really isn't. Also I used to work in a theatre running a popcorn machine. The amount of unrecognizable ingredients ie chemicals, is really disgusting IMHO. The theater should let you look... -
ARCHIVED Hand Sanitizer
ravenwoodglass replied to FootballFanatic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This may sound a bit nutty but if you have times when you can't wash but still want to eat safely you could put some nonlatex powderless plastic gloves in a baggie and keep that handy. I get my gloves at the drug store, be sure to make sure they are NOT powdered though because the powders they use can be problematical in themselves. -
ARCHIVED Greetings
ravenwoodglass replied to Zeno's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If they have already diagnosed you and are doing it as a formality my first query would be how long until they do it? You increase your chances of developing other problems and intolerances by continuing to eat something that is poison to your system. I am with your parents on this one, if you don't need the biopsy to confirm diagnosis and it sounds like... -
ARCHIVED My Turn To Ask What You All Think...
ravenwoodglass replied to Cath4k's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
She would need to have an active lesion but if she is doing well on the diet I would not gluten her to make her have one the day of the appointment. For one thing the cure for DH is the diet. It does take a while to clear up and small amounts of CC will reactivate it. What I would do is to make an appointment and then once you have a visit talk to the...
